Life Advice / Hey guys! I was looking of buying my own computer.
« on: July 23, 2011, 09:55:11 pm »
Hey guys! I have a plethora of good news since my last visit here! I found myself employed, but it was a temporary position, but then one day my boss comes up to me and asks "I would like to extend your temporary employment for another ten weeks, except full time hours this time around." and so I'm happy that I'll be making more money.

Also, I'll be getting a really cheap apartment, maybe 300$ but the price hasn't been finalized yet, and so this'll be my first place! I'm so ecstatically happy, that I'll have my own place and my own privacy. All while having free reign to look for employment elsewhere as I am employed.

Also, since as I believe my other expenses will be so low due to some helpful circumstances, I'll have quite a hunk of disposable income on my hands. So I want to ask: I was thinking of purchasing my own PC or laptop, and I want the opinion of my online friends on what would be the best deal given 500-600 dollars.

I have tech savvy friends to help me, so I could consider building my own machine if the price is right, or just buying some pre-built thing if it serves my needs.

I suppose my needs being: I'd just like something that is fairly stable and I suppose has good capabilities. I suppose I don't need a really strong system, since I don't have anything that demands a powerful system. Watching high quality videos is probably my most demanding need. As well as having a decent amount of harddrive space I suppose.

Gaming has secondary importance, since I don't have, really, any computer games, but I know that there are some technically demanding free games that can be downloaded online, and I might want to get a hold of those if the whimsy takes me.

So I ask for help, since I know next to nothing about purchasing computers. If everything goes well though, then everyone here can find me being on quite a bit more frequently. That makes me very happy.

EDIT: Also, to add to my needs, something with components that won't easily wear out from wear and tear, and will last a significant amount of time before needing to upgrade, repair, or replace.

Life Advice / What an odd problem to have with these forums
« on: July 10, 2011, 11:37:43 pm »
Alright, so I have what I think amounts to a unique problem with the forums.

The text box for writing posts? It's infinitely long. It stretched past the edge of the screen, and text that I write keeps on going and going and going, never text wrapping to the next line.

This is more bothersome than anything else, as it means either writing my posts without actually knowing what I'm writing, or inserting line breaks after every fairly long sentence, which makes everything look choppy.

This is on my friend's computer, and he runs vista and his computer is prone to doing bizarre, unhelpful things, despite him being an IT guy.

General Discussion / Extra Consideration
« on: May 07, 2011, 08:53:51 pm »
http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/extraconsideration

So Yahtzee has a second spin-off series of articles where he speaks with other Escapist Contributors about current game issues. Has anyone else seen this?

I can't help but think that there'll be another spin-off series of articles in the future called Zero Consideration, where he just writes scathing, browbeating letters to developers he dislikes.

So, out of nowhere, the forums start freaking out on me. When I try to visit some threads, it seems like time has rewound back to a couple pages. My show new replies list is just plain not working, never updating and showing things that have already been looked at.

The 'latest poster' bar just plain shows the wrong person. Going to a thread from my newest replies list or from directing to it manually from the forum menu gives me different results. AND the only way to see the latest posts are to click 'reply' and then scroll down to see the latest 15.

I have no idea what's happening I'm freaking out man.

Other Games / Dokapon Kingdom
« on: May 02, 2011, 04:19:03 pm »
So I bought, for 10$, what is probably Atlus' best and worst game. Best because it's an extremely fun party game that supports (like, literally, advocating on the box) backstabbing, strategy, psychology, and generally being a complete bastard in order to win, all wrapped up in a seemingly innocent package full of chibi characters and adorable voice acting. It's also the worst game because if you don't have completely awesome friends, you'll tear your hair out trying to play it.

Hey kids, do you want to see some magic?!

It's kind of like Mario Party, except with a PhD in bastardry.

While I do have friends willing to play for a while, the story mode is OBSCENELY long, encompassing 8 chapters over 7 continents and 10 or so dungeons. WAY WAY WAY longer than any party is going to last, it would take a group of friends DAYS to complete the entire game and have ONE of them attain ultimate victory.

The premise of the game is simple, the kingdom of Dokapon has been beset on all sides by hordes of monsters, all of which are ransacking the towns and generally taking all the money from the Kingdom, a very bad thing that the King insists on. The King of Dokapon hires the adventurers (you and everyone you’re playing with) to free Dokapon from this menace. As an incentive, he adds that whomever collects the most money (both in cash-in-hand, and raw assets owned) will get to marry his daughter Penny, and become the next King of Dokapon.

To accomplish this one important goal, collecting the most money, the game encourages you to be the biggest asshole you can be. And trust me, the potential is HUGE. Atlus themselves have published that the game is ‘friendship destroying’, and so it needs to be made clear that if you intend to play with anyone, they need to be really cool people.

There’s also some RPG elements, being able level up, learn special abilities, allocate stat points, and change classes that have different growth rates and abilities add an element of strategy in how you plan on raising your character.

The game is also excellently balanced so that it’s impossible for a single player to grab the lead, and hold onto it indefinitely. The game will occasionally present the last place player with the option to become a ‘darkling’, which is a super, unbeatable monster that has magic abilities that can lay waste to even the most powerful character and their money, towns, and items. The transformation only lasts two in-game weeks, but it’s not unusual for a darkling to completely obliterate each player’s accumulated wealth, resetting the status quo, except now with that last place player significantly more leveled up than they were before, and capable of being competitive again. It’s a great equalizing force, to say the least.

Also, I recommend that you play with real live humans, because while you CAN play with the AI, it’s not recommended, because the AI flatout cheats. The harder the AI setting, the harder it cheats, there’s no getting around it. Plus, in the minigame where you do combat with other players, it removes the psychological portion of the game where you try to deduce what you’re opponent is going to do, since computers don’t have psychology that can be read or manipulated.

Out of convenience though, I tried playing the game with three AI set to the lowest difficulty setting, at the fastest speed setting so I could get through the game as fast as possible, just to see the ending.

Then I get to the second to last area before the ending and I’m about ready to give up. I have to fight this nearly impossible boss that simply doesn’t behave like a normal fight, he follows a script. On this script, it says “Counter everything the player does with impunity, and SPAM SPAM SPAM the Quake spell, because nothing can counter that, and it paralyzes the player.”.

It turns out that I made the mistake of building an extremely magic-heavy character, with little physical strength, and this led to his downfall as he simply cannot deal enough damage to kill this monstrosity, because it turns out my magic attacks are completely worthless since they’ll be countered with impunity, and normal physical attacks are the only thing that can get through reliably, which do pitiful damage due to my low physical stats. I’m already over level 80, and even grinding against the most experience heavy monsters in the game don’t level me up quickly anymore. I’m stuck.

It is here I learn that while you have to worry about the other players, you have to worry about the game designers not wanting you to have fun any more. If it were just that... but there are tons of generic late game monsters that have un-counterable abilities that just outright destroy your equipment, which is extremely expensive and difficult and time-consuming to obtain by that point. It’s a mechanic that only accomplishes one thing: pissing off the players, and it’s bad game design. They should have focused on more ways of pitting the players against eachother, rather than FORCING them to invest all their energy into fighting against the game mechanics themselves.

Dokapon Kingdom is a fun game to play at the beginning with your friends, but I fear that the game’s design simply does not permit anyone to have fun past a certain point. It’s such a colossal waste to get this far, and just find out that the effort placed into the game was either woefully insufficient near the end, or Atlus wanted to destroy people’s free time, patience, and tolerance for the game itself ontop of the their friendships.

Has anyone else experienced Dokapon Kingdom?

Life Advice / Learning a new language?
« on: April 20, 2011, 08:25:36 am »
I was thinking of learning a new language. Maybe Espanol, as being bilingual in that regard would make myself a more valuable asset when looking for jobs.

In all honesty though, I just feel somewhat bad that anything else that even resembles another language to me is just gibberish, so I’d like to learn another. So my question is: Is there a free, effective software that I can download to learn a new language? I'm always distrustful of my google searches.

Mafia / Deathmatch Minority Mafia (Looking for players!)
« on: March 17, 2011, 07:21:20 pm »
Hey everyone, I'm back to host a unique game! This game is called Deathmatch Minority Mafia, and it's very different from normal mafia. Firstly, it's every man for himself, as opposed to team vs team. How can this be? Through a system of points that each player will be competing for. There will be 5 rounds, and the player with the most at the end of those five will be the winner. Allow me to copy/paste the full rules, which I laid out in the Threshold Discussion Topic, here:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I will be glad to answer any questions. This game idea was thought up by me, so this is an experimental trial of sorts. I hope it turns out to be a fun and challenging game for everyone involved.

Just to let everyone know, there are no unique roles in this game. There are only vanilla mafia, and vanilla townspeople.

I want exactly 8 players, if possible. Please be very active, this is intended to be a very fastpaced game. I will begin the game once all the players are ready.

Life Advice / Javascript... turned off?
« on: February 17, 2011, 08:18:42 pm »
Alright, this is MOST PUZZLING! I come back home, I go on my computer, I go to youtube, and it informs me that javascript is turned off for some reason. This apparently means I can't watch any videos whatsoever.

This is bizarre, since when I go to options, the little checkbox that says that javascript is enabled is MOST DEFINITELY checkmarked.

Can anyone point me in the right direction as to what could be wrong?

General Discussion / Man, what was the name of that one game?
« on: December 30, 2010, 07:17:34 pm »
Alright, so this has been bothering me for quite a while, but I simply can't resolve it: the name of this one flash game.

It used to be on Albino Black Sheep, but I simply can't find it anymore. It was a game reminiscent of "Kick the turtle" but it involved anime characters. Something about a guy getting hit really hard buy this one girl on a bike, and sending him flying, and it's your job to guide him into other girls who will batter, kick, and slice him, all adding to his velocity. The goal is to get as far as possible.

It had a unique feature where having him colliding into a certain sequence of girls would trigger powerful quick time event combos that would propel you even harder and higher.

Is there anyone who just so happens to remember this obscure game?

Other Games / Resident Evil: The Mercenaries
« on: November 23, 2010, 05:36:01 pm »
Alright guys, I have a real problem here. I like to think I'm a normal person with normal power fantasies, but ever since I had gotten into... like REALLY gotten into playing RE5's Mercenaries and Mercenaries Reunion, I've been obsessed with the little minigame.

The hectic, frantic mode, requiring fast reflexes, brutal efficiency, demanding level of skill, thorough knowledge of both the terrain and your enemies, and TONS of practice got me hooked. It appealed to me on a deep level that not alot of games do, following my philosophy of how I feel games should be perfectly, but more important than that, it appealed on a personal level to my romantic view of hand to hand combat.

After playing the game far too much, getting the best possible ranking on every stage with every character, I then got RE4. After beating that and unlocking original Mercenaries, I got to feel and appreciate how much harder the predecessor was. After getting the best possible ranking on each stage with each character (unlocking the handcannon in the process), I finally put the game down after finally being satisfied.

Satisfied, albeit slightly peeved that Wesker had been 'downgraded' between 4 and 5, with the Thrust Punch being vastly superior to the Cobra Strike as far as melees are concerned.

But I might as well get to the original purpose of the topic rather than blather on and on about how much I love the game, but I don't really want to. Why? Because odds are, it's going to be forever out of my reach:

http://www.joystiq.com/2010/09/29/resident-evil-the-mercenaries-3d-combines-missions-from-re4-and/

Resident Evil: The Mercenaries is a game dedicated solely to the Mercenaries minigame. Great! Fantastic! Wonderful! The minigame is comparably more fun than the story mode of either game as far as I'm concerned, it should be it's own game! Even better, if it's including RE4 characters, then I get to play with HUNK and Krauser again! and they might even be updated to include more melees! I can't even express my joy at that possibility.

But... It's on the 3DS. From what I know is simply a more advanced, more expensive version of an ordinary DS. If it were on the 360 or something, I'd happily throw down 40-50$ to get it, but this is demanding that I get throw down a hundred or so just to get the handheld system first, and THEN get the game which is I don't even know how much.

That's... downright agonizing. I know, it's supposed to be a luxury, but that's a hell of a lot to ask...

General Discussion / Joshua is back with some semi-permanence!
« on: September 09, 2010, 11:25:31 am »
Now, I'm going to be traveling back to college, again, on the 13th. This means that I'm going to have to place my forum presence on serious hiatus for the second time.

I got quite a few things done though, during my break:

Finished watching:
Angel Beats,
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood,
and I'm about a third of the way through Baccano. I have no doubts that I'll be able to finish it.

I managed to restart MSPA and read to where it is currently, which was thoroughly gratifying.

I played through my most favoritest game ever, Fire Emblem 4, again and did an LP of it in the Play With Your Buddies subforum. For those that haven't read it, that's my 7th time completing the game. SO MUCH LOVE.

And managed to become re-inspired in my creative processes, and I've picked back up on a story I've been building in my head.

My hermetic habits and long stays away from actual human contact usually leave me feeling depressed and miserable, but I have to say I feel very content at this very moment.

Things I want to do in my last 4 days:

Write down the story synopsis for the daydream I've described earlier. This is all just finding the motivation, and finalizing alot of the details.

Learn the bare bones basics of translating Japanese-language ROMs, because it's an aspect of my FE4 LP that bothered me to no end. I have no idea where to start though. I don't intend on starting in such a short amount of time, I just want to learn if it's possible for me to do it with say, all the tools placed on a flash drive, moving from computer to computer.

Watch as much of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart as I can, because it's the only TV show I actually enjoy and I really miss it during my long stays without television.

There's some other stuff, I'm sure, but I can't quite remember it all at the moment.

Life Advice / How unhealthy is this?
« on: August 31, 2010, 02:09:16 am »
I originally wanted to call this thread "A Sinister Diet?", but I decided against it.

So, I recently discovered I can cook things quickly and easily in vegetable oil. However, after cooking all manner of ham and bologna products in this fashion, I'm told that this is horrifically unhealthy.

How long do I have left to live?

Mafia / Beginner's Mafia XV - Day 4!
« on: August 25, 2010, 07:24:21 pm »
Looks like I'm gonna be running this one, I'll just copy and paste the rules from BM 14, with me changing the obvious 'this is the fourteenth' bit.

Welcome to Beginner's Mafia! This is the fifteenth run of our Beginner's Mafia series. In Beginner's Mafia, you will be pitted up with a Town IC (Inexperienced Challenged) who will help you play the game, and will be just as clueless, if not more so, about the setup as you, and a Mafia IC, who will be helping out the Mafia.

In Mafia, you are divided into two parts: Town and Mafia:
If you are Town, your goal is to lynch the Mafia. You do this by convincing others that one of the group is scum, and getting enough votes on them to lynch them.
If you are Mafia, your goal is to kill off the Town until there is an equal number of them to you by getting them to lynch other Town or by killing them. You are given a kill each Night to kill any player in the game.

Each Day, you all vote to lynch a player. Each Night, you send in your actions. The cycle continues until one side wins. Days are 72 hours and nights are 48. Weekends count for zero hours.

You may not PM other players. The mafia will have a place to talk to themselves.

In this setup, there are the possibility of extra roles. These roles are Cop and Doctor for Town, and Roleblocker and Godfather for Mafia.
A Cop inspects any player at Night. They are told that player's alignment.
A Doctor may protect any player at Night. This stops that player from being killed.
A Roleblocker stops an extra role from using an action. This stops Doctors and Cops but does nothing for Townies.
A Godfather makes Cops get Town for their alignment, instead of Mafia.

There is a 50% chance for any of these roles to show up. It is possible to end up with no extra roles.

Oh yeah, and things like editing your posts, revealing your PM's, or talking after you've been lynched are not allowed. This is a mafia staple rule that is often taken for granted, but don't forget it!

For a link to our Tutorial here at B12: http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=39338.0

If you're still confused, join anyhow and we'll teach you!

And if you have any other questions, just ask.

This game will have 9 players. If more ICs wish to join, it would be helpful, since one IC is usually never enough.

Current players:

Realmfighter Townie
Duke 2.0 Townie
dragnar Townie
Ein
Tack Townie
Aqizzar
Akigagak
Japa Mafia Godfather
Zathras Town-aligned Cop

Town IC's: Eduren and Toony

Scum IC's: Vector

That is the most literal title for a topic I've ever made.

Anyway, this has been haunting me since forever, and I was wondering if any one of the movie literate folks here could help me. This movie was animated, it was in a bizarre black and white style of animation that employed real-life pictures. The antagonist was a large, dark cloud that was slowly eating the world and hunting down the protagonists. There was the presence of an 'evil vault' that tempted people to open it. It was wildly fantastic in nature, and I believe I remember one of the main characters wearing a bowler hat.

I remember deeply enjoying this movie when I was younger, but I simply can't remember the name of it.

http://www.alessonislearned.com/index.php?comic=1

A webcomic entitled "A lesson learned but the damage is irreversible". It's a very interesting, if somewhat depressing, read. I learned of it from reading Yahtzee's latest Extra Punctuation article.

It has no coherent storyline, but the artist carefully encapsulates feelings of dreariness and hopelessness in every comic. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to self-medicate for a little while.
