DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Revolution!
« on: January 31, 2009, 08:53:48 pm »
My society starts in an age of repression and terror and gets worse. Among the common first structures I build is the Sensory Deprivation Chamber. Drowning chambers and Incineration Chambers come second. Then it gets worse. I pave the bottom of my cisterns with the dead. My tombs are the quivers of those lucky to be selected for the military, which is actually given citizenship.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The fire, it does nothing!

Bomrek: Urist! You're on fire!
Urist: I know, thank you.

Wow... that guy reminds me of Batman, somehow. Only a different sort of Batman who happily kills children.

I suppose it's not too far-fetched. Robin used to get his fair share of spankings.

Keep it up!

Batman: Moving target, you go in to the left.
Robin: What did you just call me?
Batman: Um... Robin.

The redhead, to be specific.

I have no idea why I picture them without beards. I just do.

IIRC, Tolkien never really delved into his Dwarves very much. There were only a handful of named dwarves, all male, but far fewer than the male elves and humans listed. Heck you can trace Aragorn's family straight back to the first king of Numenor. Where as the dwarves, Tulkas (IIRC) made the original 7 (mentioned as the "Fathers, perhaps they were asexual?) dwarves, and then there was the handful mentioned in The Hobbit and LotR. The Sil only mentioned a few more.

DnD, they have beards, and non-dwarves can't tell them apart. I draw this from a novel, in which after a battle it is mentioned that some number of women fell. Another character remarked that he never knew the difference. Apparently, other than the baby-making bits there are no gender differences in looks or social function.

What is Discworld?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Brain gone.
« on: January 28, 2009, 04:31:39 pm »
Personally, I think you need to write the story of Urist McBrainless, the dwarf with no brain who would be king, so he could mandate adamantium 'items'. Then order farmers executed randomly.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Anyone want to start a DF record book?
« on: January 28, 2009, 01:44:15 pm »
Preventing cheating can easily be done by uploading saves. I doubt anyone would actually doctor a DF screen shot, but you never know these days.

Also, Captain Ironblood should be disqualified from "Most Bad-assed Dwarf" as then no one would be able to take that title. Too bad-assed for the record books.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why trade & too many items?

Without (elven) caravans, there are never any sources of entertainment for my dwarves.

Urist has been comforted by the site of an elf going mad

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mtn/Desert, no wood
« on: January 28, 2009, 01:38:45 pm »
I find my wood needs usually get high enough that even in heavily forested regions I'm importing as much as I can get my grubby paws on. But, as long as you can find some other source of fuel you should be fine just importing.

One thing is that caravans NEVER seem to bring more than a few bits of charcoal along, never enough for any serious metal work. It's always on my list of requests and never on the wagons that roll in.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Problem with Wood Haulters
« on: January 28, 2009, 06:55:36 am »
Go to the Labor menu to set job prefs. Towards the bottom of the list is an option for wood hauling, stone hauling, etc...

As to the original question, I have no clue, as I've either turned hauling off entirely or left it on.

DF General Discussion / Re: DFMark

Mine usually starts slowing down at around 60-80 dwarves, and 20 pets or so if I have a lot of orders being carried out. I'm thinking of trying to use several mason shops doing nothing but building blocks, with stone blocks disallowed from my ore/coal stockpiles to cut down on hauling jobs. It'd be some really messed up workshops though, with hundreds of blocks.

Why do you think they carry them into battle? It's additional protection! And a snack!

DF Suggestions / Re: Gender Differentiation
« on: January 25, 2009, 11:33:41 am »
I think the real problem here is the ability for anyone, particularly a dwarf to wrestle a bear to death.

Haven't you ever wrestled a bear to death?

That does remind me of a thread on some random forum once. A guy was determined to kill a grizzly with nothing but a combat knife. His reasoning was that he could charge straight up to the bear, but it's throat, then get away, while the bear would be too confused to attack (?). I doubt he ever did it, seems the insane ramblings of a madman or the boasts of an idiot looking for attention.

Personally, if I ever went after a bear, I'd want a Browning Automatic Rifle (the one developed at the end of WWI)... and an armored personnel carrier.

In the context of DF, there should be little reason to have genders affect skills or capabilities. These are DWARVES, not humans, and human reasonings have no place in determining anything about our favorite, hairy psychopaths. I would like an easier way to determine them at a glance, which would just mean introducing gender into the nouns and names of the Dwarven language. At worst, having different pallets for the male/females, but that isn't even needed.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Question about towers and floors.

That room would certainly keep dwarves from tantruming. Just lock them in there.

I got some in the spring, 1 year after, with no exports on my last attempt. So Apparently I was wrong. I'm digging a huge shaft straight down, so maybe larger projects/constructions help there.

I've gone as long as two years without immigrants, even with no deaths. I think it depends more on what you export than fortress value, but I'm not sure.
