DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your first reaction to DF
« on: December 07, 2008, 08:01:10 pm »
Maska's first response and mine are quite similar.

Saw someone else playing this durring a lunch break, and thought hey it looks fun and interesting. Had him explain a little bit about it and was like I need to try this.

After downloading it later that day, it took several hours just to figure out how to get things working. I abbandoned several fortresses over the course of learning the controls, as I had an idea of what could show up later, as I knew I would not be ready for them with the "awkward" starts I was having. Found the wiki the next day and it has made things more streamlined.

Now my problem isnt the controls or knowing what to do, it is just figuring out a good fort layout and a goal to work on after getting set-up to keep things interesting.

Well, I got lucky then... All I ended up loosing was the butcher shop made out of wood, which happened to be outside with nothing but stone around. So dwarfs will actually move the boiling fat into a food stockpile? Have to be really carefull with the fire imps then.

Oh, and something I just ran across, to keep an eye out for. If you have a butcher shop, and a dead fire imp, can end up with some interesting things. As the fire imp fat instantly boils.

Best thing you can do is change the refuse pile settings. I usualy have 2 set up, one that only takes bone and shell, the other outside and takes everything else. Just set up your refuse pile that takes most things to not accept the things that are causing you problems. After all, if the dwarfs don't have anywhere to put them, they wont go after them.

This is very good idea. As having started playing dwarf fortress just a few months ago I have a good idea as to spots that would be useful to cover. And one of the bigger things that probbly hold up new players is aquifers. So might want to make that one a priority. After that I would say surviving the 2nd year pre-winter imigrant rush, as the 2nd winter was a stopping point for me a few times, mostly due to food or drink issues. When starting out it is not the easiest to go from 7 dwarfs to almost 80 in your 2nd year. In both feeding them and finding productive work for all those dwarfs.

Other than that, was just learning the controls at the begining. And after that was figuring out which workshops are more useful over all.

Entry-2

Ever since that baron and his cohorts arrived things here have been a mess.  Thanks to them, and their "Taxes" I have a bone to pick with them, espeicaly since there has not been a lot of smithing to do recently... How do they expect a good dwarf to pay their "Taxes" when there isn't any work to be done? It's not like metal grows on trees and can be used for every little thing. Must be nice to live in their little world where they think everything happens as they want it. I'm gonna have to have a chat with the mayor about this. Though something a bit more interesting is recently we managed to get a dragon into a cage. The dragon gives me the creeps though, always eyeing me like I am some snack, well I guess to a dragon I would be a mere snack.

Entry-3

Today I managed to have a chat with the mayor, and the mayor had a solution to the lack of work and taxes for me. Asked me how I would feel bout joining the military for a while, as they need more able bodied dwarfs. Of course I said yes, after all gives me a chance to earn some honor for myself. At least I get a chance at something more interesting than beating on metal or twiddling my thumbs. And there have been plenty of goblins showing up, so I should get a chance to crush some skulls before too long. I'm eagerly awaiting the next bunch of goblins to show up, after all not everyday a smith gets a chance to bless his hammer with the blood of goblins. I hear talk of an arena opening up soon, that might be a good place to start with testing my skills.

(ooc- I would like amon to go up against a theif, then a wrestler, then the hammergob as a bit of training, and depending on his skill with a hammer, might want to go after a few more later.)

I hope the dragon enjoys it's gift-wrapped snacks. Now if only a dragon would show up for me in my forts.

Oh, and a thought for helping out with the sieges, make a small tower for the marksdwarfs. I would go up at least 2 levels from the entrance. 1st level firing out over the entrance, 2nd level to cover the ledge around the back. And would station the marksdwarfs on ground level till the goblins got close as you wanted, then move to the 1st floor and rain down bolts of death, and when they break and flee, move up to the 2nd floor to pick off runners. Just have to be carefull with the timing of stationing the marksdwarfs so they don't break the siege too early and take out all the fun.

113
Ack... They don't look they will be friendly nobles... might have to fix that at some point.

Oh, if the sieges keep causing problems, don't forget to draft Amon as a hammerdwarf. After all he likes hitting things with a hammer, steel or goblin heads, it don't matter to him.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: The perfect site

I found one that is really nice, just lacking sand, plentiful trees, and a source of bauxite. Has rhyolite, felsite, gabbro, marble, gnesis, granite, basalt, andesite and 2 soil layers. All in a 4x4 area.
Here is the picture of what I used in the finder to locate the site.

Here is the World Gen info. Note, will get a rejection for too many regions, allow it, and this world shows up.

This sould be a fun area to play in.

Isn't that how things always work? As soon as you think or say something you need or don't want to happen, the game decides to find some way to cause you trouble.

Always seem to get my first ambush around the time I decide to start working on military, or when I actualy need an item from the caravans, they never have it.

Hmm, I think the initial 7 are taken.

Though I would not mind a female weaponsmith, though male would be fine as well.

Kyterra for name if female, Gyoubu if male.

Ah, the familair smell of the forge. After the long trip to Waspurn it feels good to be at an anvil again. I have been told I am needed to make various necesities for the time being, as there is a more skilled weapon and armorsmith around. That is good and all, but I hope to try my hand at making them as well at some point, but our military needs the best they can get, however the humans can do with inferior equipment.

Recently I have heard a dwarf by the name of Kornash met with a honerable death while practicing the sword. I would like to meet my end fighting instead of from old age, but as a smith that is unlikely. Though I have volunteered to crush some skulls with a hammer if the need arises, and it seems I may get that chance someday. As goblins do show up now and then here, but not in any numbers that the full time military needs extra hands. Though I expect that to change, as goblins always come in droves after finding a place to raid.

(ooc-what kind of metalcrafts do you have amon making? If you can, have him spar a bit so that if/when he is needed to help in battle he is at least somewhat profficent with a hammer.)

118
What I find really odd bout the death of the first dwarf was it was right after the spear was gotten for the fort too. I wonder if the dwarf had grabbed the spear or if it is still in the fort?

I can only hope the 2nd dwarf does not get crushed by another bridge, and dies in some very interesting way.

119
Wonder why that drawbridge has been so lethal?

Anyways... How bout a male dwarf this time, which works at some kind of smithing when not needed as a hammerdwarf.

Use Amon for the name.

Hmm, I would like one of the female migrant dwarfs.

Name: Kyterra

Hunter/speardwarf. As for equipment setting's buckler and leather at the highest please. Want to hunt with a spear, so might want to make her one that has agile.
