DF Modding / Re: changing the number of invaders
« on: July 04, 2009, 02:15:04 pm »
Unfortunately not. Sieges and ambushes appear in squads, and the number that appear are based (as far as I can tell) on the number that have appeared before and the number of their world gen leaders that you have killed. First one is always a single squad, maximum of five squads. Siege squads are 16 enemies, ambush squads seem to vary between four and eight.

Ally. He's a nice guy, and won't betray you.

Really? He always seemed erratic to me: hugging me one moment and declaring vendetta the next. Maybe I just had Aggressive AI on and didn't realize it. Or I was using Police State.

And yes, I remember going to war with Lal for 80-odd years as the Gaians because I wouldn't pay him 50 energy credits to not attack one of my empty unity foils. The man can hold a grudge.

But, early war is bad for the University. Make peace with him, but don't bother keeping it if he starts getting uppity about sharing research or some such like that.

So untill further evidence it only makes sense to me that we vote Fey Especially since if Josh is town then we have an enchanter and can easily win.

Flint has already voted for AFD, so the vote is currently 4/3 in favor of the lynch.

Nope, you can go through the entire thing without any party members. I think that it is possible to complete the game by killing every man, woman, and child that you meet. Obviously, some quests will be unavailable if you do that, though.

You dont have to have a party, but you cannot finish the game if you kill every man woman and child. There is atleast one person that you need to do/get something from in order to finish the game. That and you lose out on alot of good quests.

Well, losing out on a lot of the quests is obvious. After all, that's what the people do. You might be able to do all the good quests, kill all the good people, do all the bad quests (the non-exclusive ones, anyway), kill all the bad people, and have that work. But there wouldn't be much point there.

I believe that you can kill everyone outside the initial village (which you are supposed to be trying to save, anyway)

Pandarsenic:
Quote
"The worst part of Josh's argument is that I have no reason to lie because I have no way to possibly win so the closest I can get is to try to get 2 townies left killing the final Dopp."
I don't really trust this, but I trust chaoticjosh and AFD less. Panda also had this to say:
Quote
"Oh, and just for reference, OF COURSE THE DOPPS WOULD LAY EARLY FOUNDATION FOR A FAKE TOWN BASE. They had 3 of the Big 5.
All they need is for you to lynch Frelock so they can KILL RYSITH AND HE CAN'T DISABLE THEIR ENCHANTER."
This is wrong, by the way. Role-blockers come before NKs.

So, Pandar is right, he can't win right now:
Quote from: Rules
Exterminator - The doppelganger infestation is a danger to the Alien's people, and it and all traces of it must be wiped from the Earth. The Alien kills one person a night. The Alien wins when they are the only one left alive.
I'll admit that that's a change from the previous versions (I think?) where the exterminator could win as long as all non-exterminators were dead. I might be remembering the deathamancer from mind and magic, though. Regardless, Pandar cannot be the only one left alive, and thus cannot win. It also seems like that makes the deadman's bomb a useless piece of equipment (since otherwise it allows the exterminator to win in a 2 dopps + exterminator position), so I'd like a rule clarification on exterminator's ability to win posthumously. Otherwise, there may still be the 1 townie + 1 dopp in the day phase that I mentioned earlier. If exterminator posthumous victory is possible, I'll see if that particular scenario is viable.

Pandar's point about a) the dopps laying an early foundation for a town base being reasonable and b) my power being their largest threat, especially if they have an enchanter. The warden is the only role right now (I believe) that can prevent them from getting at least one kill a night, and thus the largest threat to their victory. Killing me tonight isn't as good as lynching me today (since then I couldn't block anything), but it's certainly better for them than letting me live. I'd say that Pandar should have said "Can't disable their enchanter any more", but I'd also say that his point still stands.

Of course, in the unlikely event that there is a protector out there, please protect me tonight, since I'm almost certainly going to be targeted.

Clearly, once you get advanced terraforming, you need to build a mountain for the Mountainhomes to be on. It's the dwarfy way.

Second Pandarsenic's suggestion for rushing to the Hunter-Seeker Algorithm. Get The Virtual World on the way, if you can. Those two are like the "The University has no drawbacks" projects.

Also, when did Archangel and Rick1 claim?

Rick1 claimed normal townie:
I too am a simple townie.

Archangel claimed mad scientist + snooper
I'm the mad scientist and I have a snooper bot. I wasn't online to use it the first night this time I sent it to CJ's house and he stayed there. I don't want to continue playing but I will until Meph gets a replacement for me.

which several people commented on as odd, but I (and others) explained it as him wanting to leave the game.

However, with Frelock's claim you are out of people to cover investigative roles for your "all investigative roles have investigated me" claim, with none of them stepping forward to defend you other than AFD.

I can also state that I've confirmed Nuke as the medium by asking him things that only the dead would know. If people aren't comfortable publicly roleclaiming, I'd urge them to roleclaim to Nuke, as well as giving any information that they have.

And lastly, an annotated list to try to make things easier. All roleclaims human, obviously. In particular, AFD should say something if he's scanned any of the townies.
A_Fey_Dwarf Telepath
Archangel Mad Scientist
chaoticjosh Enchanter
Flintus10 Townie
Frelock* Townie
Mr.Person*
NUKE9.13 Medium
R1ck Townie
Rysith Warden

Pre-post edit: chaoticjosh: That would mean only one actual townie, Org. That seems high. It also does nothing to still the fears of doppleganger enchanters.

No Bach? Why is there no Bach?

I'd suggest, in particular:
Toccata and Fugue in D minor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipzR9bhei_o) and
Concerto for 4 harpsichords (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sdaVX-K5j8)

The Temple of Trials is the Scrappy level of FO2.  It's out-of-place, weird, and you'll have forgotten about it entirely by the time you play any of the rest of the game.

This.

But Virtz is right, there should be a door directly ahead of you that you should open.

When you've figured out looking at things (the cursor with the binoculars next to it), look at everything. Some are useful, some are funny, some are both.

I think that I agree that a podcast-type thing would be good. Once a month, or once every two months, seems like a reasonable frequency.

It's probably important, for example, to establish how this is different from the current dev list Q&A thread for example, since the Q&A thread is easier to prepare.  So if you would like to listen to something like this, I'd like to hear why in particular, and what in particular, so we can plan it out according to what people actually want.

I think that one of the important differences between a podcast and the Q&A thread is that the podcast creates a single thing that we, the members, can pass around to those who might be interested in dwarf fortress. Pointing potential inductees at the download site, the forums, or even the new play-along tutorials doesn't do a great job of explaining to them why Dwarf Fortress is worthy of their time and donation. A podcast that was a mixture of current developments on Dwarf Fortress and your hopes for the future of Dwarf Fortress, with a friendly bump towards the download page, forums, and tutorials would, and I think that that would be the significant difference from the Q&A thread. The podcast would also be in a much more condensed and structured form than that Q&A thread, which means that listeners would only have to listen to the "important" questions that came up.

Technically, it shouldn't be that hard to set up a reasonable recording space, skype call, and edit the final product into a distributable format. Distribution doesn't seem that hard either, and if bandwidth is a problem then distributing it through bittorrent seems possible. I'm sure that there are plenty of bay12ers who would be happy to donate their bandwidth to keeping it available.

Angellus's extras seem like they would be nice, but the music would make it require more technical skill to put together. It might also make it seem more approachable to new people, though, so if there was a bay12er who was willing to donate their skill (and The Great One approved), it might be worthwhile.

edit by way of post. Today is Day 0 in that analysis. It is only my ability as warden that can prevent a dopp enchanter from winning tomorrow, and the dopps can only prevent that by lynching me today.

9/3
lynch town
8/3
dopps kill rysith. Rysith roleblocks josh
7/3
kill josh
6/2
dopps kill townie
5/2
kill AFD
4/1
dopps kill townie
3/1
...

Day 0:
9/3
lynch Rysith

Night 0:
8/3
dopps kill townie

Day 1:
7/3, actually 7/4 because of dopp-chaoticjosh (in hypothetical-land). Dopp victory.

Day 1 is today. That's why the plan would have worked.
dopp-chaoticjosh likely only knew that I was a protection role, unless one of the dopplegangers is a detective. Even then, a protection role would be either a protector or a warden, both thorns for the dopplegangers. I made a reasonable target, and if I was a protector rather than a warden they would have won as long as I didn't get lucky on my protection choice tonight. Definitely reasonable odds to start the plan, especially with confidence that the lynch would go through.

Once again, though, I'll ask for anyone with evidence of AFD/chaoticjosh's innocence to come forward with it. The last thing that we want to do is kill townies unnecessarily. Unfortunately, I think that the only person who could do that would be a town telepath (who is claimed, unchallenged, and suspected) or an agent (who seems not to exist).

chaoticjosh: Why would cheeetar have a scanner? He was a survivor, and thus would probably have a shield. Having Nuke press the dead for information is an excellent idea, though. Nuke, send PMs if you can to the dead non-dopps asking for anything they know. The more information we have the easier it will be to piece everything together.

Life Advice / Re: A friend will die of cancer within a month
« on: July 02, 2009, 04:40:23 pm »

I am pretty sure that it would be much lower. Just think a bit. Some people are being "cured" for 5+ years, and in most of the cases the patient will die anyways. -> Side note: The government don't have to pay pension at all + the patients will spend tons of money while they are under medical attendance.
Either way, we cannot be sure about anything, maybe these conspiracy theories are false...maybe not.

First, this.

Good, now that you've read that, the government doesn't pay pensions, except to its own employees. Instead, they pay huge medicare bills for old people who get cancer. The government would benefit hugely from a reliable cure for cancer. Ditto the insurance companies. In general, in fact, in any situation where you have a theory that goes "X is suppressing Y because they make $$$$ money off of the thing that Y prevents.", it's also generally true that there exists some group A that would save $$$$ money if Y were implemented. When the groups that you come up with are "The government" and "insurance companies", it's hard to believe that they wouldn't have financed their own studies into it if it existed. As well, there are enormous short-term incentives for someone to release it, patent it, and roll in cash for the duration of the patent. Can you imagine how much money you could make in 17 years of being the only company that could sell the cure for cancer? Here's another hint: 17 years will be longer than it takes for the current leadership to retire, so you don't even need to personally deal with the fallout!

I'm sorry for the derailing, it just seems really disrespectful to go on about cancer conspiracy theories in a thread where someone someone knows is suffering because of it. It makes light of the situation. Once again, Jackrabbit, you have my condolences, and if I believed in a higher power that accepted prayers, I would pray for her.

I know that's wrong Rysith. I know that's wrong because I've been hit by every single investigative role in the game.

Every.

Single.

One.

They're just being lazy about stepping forward to clear me.

Nuke, I have a request, commune with Cheeetar. He was an alien, so he probably had a scanner. Find out what he knows.

How would you know you had been investigated, apart from AFD's announcement?

If anyone has any information on chaoticjosh, please come forward now. We're definitely at the point where information on the accused should be made public, regardless of potentially exposing your role. We've already got a medium and a warden on the table, it's unlikely that you would be a higher priority target than those.

@Rysith: You honestly believe there's no town investigative roles?! That hasn't happened in a single paranormal thus far, and is an absolutely CRAZY notion!

Certainly none aside from AFD, who I don't trust to be town, have stepped forward. Thus, there might as well be none at this point. If we do have them, it's likely that only the Agent would really help here, and might not in the presence of a dopp leader.
