DF Gameplay Questions / Umm... personal servant to plant gatherer?

Ok, I don't know what is going on...

I have my chief medical dwarf, with all labors except recovering wounded, diagnosing, dressing wounds, feeding patients, and cleaning, getting a job to 'bring food' or something like that. He carried some food out to a perfectly healthy, ambulatory plant gatherer. There is a patient awaiting diagnoses in the hospital, who the doctor is on his way to now that he has fed the plant gatherer...

Anyone know why he was running around feeding the plant gatherer?

DF Gameplay Questions / stockpiles and loose stone

So I have played DF for a while, but just learned that you don't have to move stone from a room before using it for a stockpile...

The thread I read that in (which I can't seem to find again) had a caveat, which I think was that you can't stockpile stone on top of loose stone. Is that the only caveat? Any other type of item will ignore any loose stone?

So right now, I have no steel production (haven't reached my marble layer yet).

I have a small squad of 3 dwarves practicing with practice axes & wooden shields... one grew attached to his wooden shield.

When I get steel, I assume this means he is going to be problematic in terms of swapping his shield out...
Is there any way to force him? If not, does that mean I should probably take away the others' shields so they don't grow attached to such inferior products?

DF Gameplay Questions / World gen seems MUCH slower in 31.11

So in 31.10, I generated a large world, and it was kind of slow, but bearable (maybe 15 minutes on a core 2 duo 3gh with 4 gb of ram)

I am generating my first large world in 31.11, and it is SLOW. I've been doing so for at least 40 minutes, and its at year 524. It seems to stop for a good while (at least a minute, probably more like 2 or 3) every 25 years, at year X24, X49, X74, X99. (I.e., at year 24, 49, 74, 99, 124, 149, etc)

I think I noticed such pauses before, but they didn't last nearly as long... anyone else notice worldgen taking longer in this release? (Though I've only generated a few worlds since v31 was released, so it could be that this world has something going on that those others didn't which is causing this)

I was looking through the ini file, and it struck me that the seasonal autosave is no longer an available option. Anyone know why, or if there is some other way to enable it?

Can a burrow be made up of discontinuous areas?

E.g.,

BBBXXXBBB
BBBXXXBBB
BBBXXXBBB
XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
XXXXXXXXX
BBBXXXBBB
BBBXXXBBB
BBBXXXBBB

X = non-burrow
B = burrow

Can I make ONE burrow that has all the B's, none of the X's? If so, will dwarves assigned to the burrow go through the non-burrow areas as needed to get to the other parts of their burrow? (Without using any materials from the non-burrow area, of course)

If I have several (or 10+) food & booze stockpiles around, is there any way (other than making them all really small and growing them slowly) to get food & booze distributed evenly?

E.g., lets say I have 15 10-square food stockpiles accepting prepared meals, and 2 kitchens turning out lots of food. Is there any way to get haulers to stock the stockpiles somewhat evenly? (I guess I could just make the stockpiles a lot smaller, but then the kitchens will clutter up... I want to be able to move out lots of food and have it stored, but also keep multiple different stockpiles filled up).

One way I can think of would be a large central food stockpile, which other smaller stockpiles all take from... is that the best way to do this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Training soldiers (not training bug related)

So here is what I want:

 - Squad trains for some or all of the year, using practice weapons
 - When not training, squad will be stationed somewhere, killing something, or defending a burrow, etc. No civilian tasks.
 - When training, I want them to use training versions of their main weapon. When not training, I want them to use real weapons.
 - If they are in the middle of training and are suddenly needed, I want to be able to have them QUICKLY switch to their real weapons.

From bits and pieces gathered from various toady posts and probably other places, my guess is the following:

 - In the uniform for this squad, set it up with real weapons, not training weapons. They should automatically switch to training weapons (if they are available) when they go to train, right?
 - Have plenty of storage for squad and individual equipment near their training ground, so that if I interrupt their training, they will be able to quickly swap to real weapons.

Do I need to assign a specific container to each dwarf in the squad, within a barracks designated to hold individual equipment for that squad?
Do I need squad storage? What gets stored in squad storage vs individual storage?

DF Gameplay Questions / My well isn't working...

I'm trying to designate it as a water source. Its built 7 z-levels above a 7/7 deep water tile, which is fed by a brook (flowing down a series of ramps).

When I try to designate an activity zone by it, water source is grayed out. What am I doing wrong? It looks like this on top:

XW_
XX_

Where _ is open floor and X is wall, W is the well.

Then there is a 7 z-level straight vertical shaft down to the water.

Am I missing something?

EDIT: I removed the wall above and below the well... water source still grayed out.
But a dwarf did go use the well to clean himself, so apparently they can get water out of it...

DF Gameplay Questions / military woes

So, I've set up my military (31.10), scheduled training all year, and set them to the right alert to do so.

Of the 3 dwarf squad, 2 members are showing scheduled order train (and are doing demonstrations, or trying to, but end up waiting), and the leader of the squad shows no scheduled order, and has 'no job'. He still has his civvie graphic, while the other 2 have the soldier graphic.

If I deactivate and then reactivate the squad, the 2 members who had shown orders swap back to the civvie graphic. I've tried toggling several times, and the non-leaders will swap back and forth and go train, but the leader of the squad stays a civvie... any one know why, or what I can do to get him on board?

DF Gameplay Questions / 'Position' assignment in baracks?

What does it do? It seems to let me select one member of the squad I have assigned to the baracks, and there is no way to clear the selection... I'm wondering what effect this selection has?

So I often have the following scenario:

1) OH GOD A THIEF/SNATCHER!
2) Issue kill order
3) Watch my military chase the bugger out of the fort, across the map, and off the map.
4) Cry at the lack of blood


There are 2 possible solutions I can think of...
1) Have some marksdwarves. My impression is that they don't do very much though...
2) Make my dwarves faster. What would be the fastest way to get my dwarves more agility? In 2010 it seems that mental/social skill-ups don't increase physical attributes... do different physical activities have different effects on attributes? (I.e., does a mining-skillup favor strength over agility? Would learning how to dodge better result in a better chance of being more agile instead of stronger?)

So, given the combat changes, should I just focus on sword and axe dwarves? Do hammerdwarves pretty much suck, or are they good when mixed with troops that can actually kill stuff?

Is wrestling no longer really much good either?

I know I saw it in the thoughts & preferences screen, but those descriptions didn't seem to change as my dwarves skilled up...

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves won't haul stone blocks?

Anyone else seen this?

I have several stockpiles accepting stone blocks, and all hauling labors enabled on many dwarves. Many of my dwarves with all hauling enabled have no job, and haven't for a while.

One of my stockpiles looks like it got a couple bins. One of the bins has a single stone block in it. The others are sitting around cluttering up workshops. I deconstructed the workshop, and they exploded around, but still no hauling.

Any ideas?
