DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Where is everyone building bedrooms now?
« on: April 06, 2010, 09:14:41 am »
So, I used to dig shafts down to the very lowest z-level, and start my bedroom complexes down there, with industry and other things more towards the surface in the shafts.

Now, I can't dig down even a few z-levels without hitting caverns and all sorts of other stuff. I'd like to avoid having sleeping dwarves disturbed by noise, but don't want them having to trek too far to sleep either...

What are you all doing?

DF Gameplay Questions / Military questions not covered in guide
« on: April 05, 2010, 10:10:36 am »
So I've read http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/DF2010:Military

I still have a few questions:

 - Is there a way to designate a separate set of equipment for sparring vs actual duty? I.e., if I have my squad set to no order half the time, and the other half split between training and patrolling, is there a way to tell them to use training weapons when training, and real weapons otherwise? Or is this automatic?
If it is automatic, would I say, equip axedwarfes with steel battleaxes, and when they go to train, if there are wooden practice axes, great, otherwise they will kill each other?
What about hammer dwarves? There are no wooden practice hammers that I saw... would be nice if I could get them to use silver or something for practice, without having to manually alter their equipment to steel when they go on patrol...

2) On no orders, apparently the dwarves still train and such. Is there a way to have a dwarf in a military position and have him ONLY do civilian things? If I have him in 'civilian clothes' instead of military uniform, will he only do civilian tasks?

Thanks!

DF Gameplay Questions / sources of bauxite?
« on: March 09, 2010, 01:35:31 pm »
If my civ didn't have any available at embark, and the dwarven traders don't have any (I think I read that they use the same availability list as I had at embark), and as far as I know my map doesn't have any, is there any way I can get bauxite?

If not, I guess that'll severely limit my magma capabilities... I guess I can still use magma forges and stuff (by channelling out stuff, and building a wall to prevent flooding), but no on/off magma stuff, such as obsidian farming?

DF Gameplay Questions / how much water pressure will a brook provide?
« on: March 09, 2010, 01:02:27 pm »
So I embarked at the source of a brook, so it is a bunch of 1-tile wide bits that come together into a wider part right at the edge of the map.

I'd like to use this brook for multiple waterfalls, farm irrigation, noble "entertainment", and possibly a flooded entrance defense.

Am I going to have issues with water pressure if I want say 40 waterfalls on a given level? I am building 5x5 bedrooms with a waterfall in each room, 40 rooms per level. The dining room with waterfalls will be on a separate level. I have a pit I can drain all the water off into. I'd rather not have to deal with pump stacks, but I guess if the pressure wouldn't be enough, I could get a massive power station going and have 40ish pump stacks that take a very wide (say, 40ish tiles) waterway and pump it up above the where the bedroom levels start... then just have the brook fill that up before I activate it.

I'd really rather just use the brook though. I don't wanna dig it all out before finding out that I don't have enough pressure though... any thoughts?

So I have a system for keeping track of dwarves whose custom profession changes a lot. I like to name my soldiers by the primary weapon they will end up using (so I can keep track of marksdwarves who are just temporarily training unarmed, or training hammer, and so on). All my soldiers in training I had nicknamed "Soldja". They were miners.

At either my first or second ambush (don't recall which), I noticed something odd: one of my "Soldja" dwarves (who had only mining enabled, and a custom profession "Miner D") was listed in the "units" screen as an invader! I checked with Dwarf Manager, and indeed one of my 9 training miners was gone (DM only showed 8). I zoomed over to the unit listed as an invader (along with a bunch of goblins). He was displayed as the @ symbol or whatever which you normally see the trading liasons as. I couldn't get at any of his skills, inventory, labors, or anything--it was as if he were a goblin. He was out in front of the rest of the goblins, and they were all moving together.

Well, I called out my military to deal with the ambush, and they shot him full of bolts! (They also killed some of the goblins). I got a message saying he bled to death (I think... might be mis-remembering that part).

After this, I noticed that when an ambush happens, my dwarves nicknames also get erased or screwed up occasionally... for example, I had 3 dwarves in a squad, all nicknamed "Marks" for marksdwarf... after they dealt with an ambush, they all had survived, but one of them no longer had a nickname (and yes, it was definately the same dwarf--all the same skills and settings for weapons, etc). Another time the nickname changed to "Soldja" from "Marks". (And yes, I'm positive I hadn't forgotten to update the nickname when transferring a soldier from citizen-trainee to military dwarf--I always change the nickname before putting a dwarf into a military squad.)

A few other observations:
 - Not sure if any children had been snatched, but if so, I certainly hadn't nicknamed any of them. And that wouldn't account for me having 9 miner dwarves (all nicknamed Soldja or SiegeOp), then suddenly 8 miner dwarves (with a Soldja missing), and a nicknamed dwarf leading a goblin ambush...
 - The "mindwashed" dwarf had no injuries at all until my soldiers got to him.
 - The "mindwashed" dwarf had all his equipment on him after my soldiers killed him.
 - This "mindwashing" thing has happened at least twice now (my fort is just starting its 3rd year I think), out of maybe 7 ambushes.

DF Bug Reports / [40d11] Soldier stuck picking up equipment
« on: April 21, 2009, 12:05:22 pm »
I had a soldier just stand in the same spot "picking up equipment" for a while. I went through all wearable items in the stocks screen and made sure none were forbidden or marked for dumping. He still was stuck.

He was set to fight unarmed, in plate with a shield. I changed this to be unarmed, clothes, no shield. He still remained stuck at "picking up equipment". I gave him a few in-game days--no change.

I deactivated him from service. He was still stuck as "picking up equipment" (I let him sit there for a while after deactivating--no change.)
I tried adding some hauling labors to him (he had all labors disabled)--no change.

I reactivated him for service and maybe fiddled with some of his equipment settings (back to plate/shield I think, don't quite recall), and he finally got unstuck...

So I have one of my soldiers-to-be set as the record keeper. He took over at least 2 seasons ago, probably more like 3. He still has NO skill in organizer (or whatever it is). He does have hauling tasks enabled, and spends all his time hauling. Under the noble screen setting for the record keeper, it says he has done enough work to have highest precision. It has said that since long before he took over from the original record keeper...

Is there anything I can do to make him do some updating stockpile records work? If not, I'll just switch him out to the mining troop or something, and reinstate the mayor as the record keeper.

So I have a large plus-shaped dining room with the corners used for food storage. I have a dining room from one of the tables covering the whole area, including storage (so now its just a large square). I tried at first leaving doors on the food storage and only defining the plus shape as the dining room, but that didn't work either.

All my dwarves just eat on the food storage area, and all get the unhappy thought about a lack of chairs... I have 8 chairs and tables all next to each other (one line of chairs above a line of tables). I have 2 offices defined which are overlapping the same area.

Anyone know how I can get my dwarves to actually use the dining room?

DF Gameplay Questions / Traders just leave all their stuff?
« on: April 19, 2009, 10:16:37 am »
First off--I am not a complete newb :)

I did not seize the goods (even by accident--I only selected a few things, traded, and then took back my empty bins and told my trader he was no longer needed).

These were the first merchants to ever arrive at this fort. The surroundings are "calm" and there have been no ambushes, etc, so I'm pretty sure they weren't attacked... nothing in announcements about an attack.

Got the message they were leaving soon, and then a bit later that they had packed up and left. I notice my dwarves all running up and down to the depot. I looked, and the merchants seem to have left ALL of the items they had. I'm running 40d11... anyone know whats up with this?

(Maybe this should go in bug reports, but I wanted to make sure there is nothing I could have done that would legitimately cause this)

DF Gameplay Questions / combat logs in fortress mode?
« on: April 14, 2009, 02:46:05 pm »
Is there anywhere I can view combat logs in fortress mode?

ie: If after (or during) a fight I wanted to see who was hitting who, how much damage was done, which organs were mangled, etc...

DF Gameplay Questions / Armor block values
« on: April 13, 2009, 12:21:48 pm »
So on the wiki, here: http://dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Armour, there is a table that gives "block" values. Anyone know how these block values work? (ie: any formula they are used in, how they are used, etc?) I'm guessing not, or it would probably be up there, but thought I'd ask.

Also, what do the split block values on the upper body mean? ie: Chain mail is 50/30, plate is 70/50, leather is 20/20... are these differentiating block between different damage types?

DF Gameplay Questions / Effect of "neighbors" on embark screen?
« on: April 10, 2009, 11:15:47 pm »
So I found what I think is a pretty ideal starting spot, but my only neighbors are human and elf... does that mean I won't have any goblin ambushes, thieves, sieges, etc?

If it does not mean that, what does it mean?

Thanks

First the specifics--I have a map with a brook on it, and I'll eventually want to use some water to:
 - Go under a well for nice indoor drinking
 - Irrigate some soil layer farming so I can fertilize it
 - Possibly power some water wheels

From reading on the DF Wiki, it seems there are 2 ways to deal with infinite water sources (although brooks are apparently funny in some ways...):
 1) Use a reservoir. That is, dig out an area which is totally contained between two floodgates, and have the water source up against the outer floodgate. Open the outer gate to fill the area, then close the outer gate. Open the inner gate to release the water to wherever will use it.
 2) Don't bother with all that manual crap and just have the water flow to somewhere it can drain.

I couldn't really find a comprehensive list of places I can drain water to... I have a magma pipe... if I put water into that, will it make obsidian? Or will it just evaporate? (I read that magma flowing into water produces obsidian.. but what if I direct water into the magma pipe?)

I think I'd prefer drainage (although I think I'd need a carefully sized reservoir for the farming irrigation... right?) since then I won't have to bother with pulling levers to keep my well, waterfalls, and any water wheels working.

Can I have a pump tower feed the water back into the brook? (I think I read that works with rivers... are brooks different?)

Thanks for any help you guys can give me!

DF Gameplay Questions / AHK macro script?
« on: November 14, 2008, 02:30:15 pm »
Anyone have an AHK script which can record, save, and play back macros?

If not, I might write an emacs style one when I have time... if so, could I get a copy?

DF Gameplay Questions / Fertilization?
« on: November 13, 2008, 05:49:32 pm »
So I would like to be able to fertilize my farms... I've read the wiki page <a href="http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Farming#Increasing_yield>here[/url], but would like to ask a few more things:

If I go ahead and build farms on soil layers, will I be able to fertilize by eventually getting an irrigation system set up? (even though I don't need one to grow, since it is in dirt)?

I did try fertilizing regular underground farmland, and my dwarves wouldn't do it... is there a mod out there that would let me fertilize normal farmland so that I don't have to run an irrigation system?
