I'm probably being stupid somehow, but what is wrong with sending military dwarves up? They will break the windows, sure, but the will probably bring a few goblins with them. Repeat until every goblin is gone... Right?

It's possible that you clicked on the ground while the channel designation was still selected. If you've allowed mouse control in the init.txt, it'll place a designation.

Out of curiosity, how do you end up with an animal walking around with a rope attached to it?  I've always thought ropes/chains were constructions.  Is it when you deconstruct a rope while an animal's attached to it?

Magma can be found in a lot of places, not just volacanos. And to find it and underground rivers, edit the init.txt and set

It can, but not always. And as for caging him, try building a 1x2 room with a lever and a cage trap. Set the lever so only he can pull it, and set it to repeatetly pull. When he's in there, lock the door and cancel the lever pulling job. With a bit of luck, he'll fall asleep on the trap and get nabbed.
