DF Suggestions / Break Fat-Tallow apart into seperate food enteries.
« on: March 31, 2011, 02:43:40 pm »
With close to 300 entries and the fact tallow is used at different workshops than fat, it would be nice if they had separate entries on the food stockpile list so we did not need to change hundreds of things to make a fat only or tallow only pile.

* oops this suggestion was just made and is being discussed better.

DF Suggestions / Allow dwarves to carry more than one quiver
« on: March 30, 2011, 09:11:58 pm »
I really wish when i assign 2500 bolts to a squad of dwarves they would keep picking up quivers until they could carry that many.

Yes, I know it would slow my archers down to a crawl, they are behind fortifications above the enemy.. I dont care...

They shoot their 25 bolts off (without killing a single creature a lot of the time with the fortress defense mod)  And then just stand there like idiots because I was smart and closed the gates so they cannot suicide charge.

I suppose they could go get more bolts.. But I would prefer since it is already in the interface that we can assign a squad more than 250 bolts we might as well have them freaking carry them.

I suppose the ability to make super large quivers that held 100 bolts would be ok, but I cannot imagine one of them would work well as a quiver.

I made this simple world creation file and embark tweak a while ago.

It gives you a lot of embark points to work with, and tones down the world map's difficulty quite a bit from default values.

If you use the embark profile that is set up, you will be able to start almost every industry and get the hang of it, without worrying about your dwarves starving or dying of thirst for several years.

Once you get the hang of dwarf fortress the early part becomes simple to do, but until that point this allows you to experience some of the depth without being torn apart by the learning curve.

Simple Fortress

Just download it and unzip it in your dwarf fortress folder.

I hope you enjoy it, and I hope you keep playing dwarf fortress.  Believe me, it really does get easier and better!

DF Modding / Simple Fortress
« on: February 17, 2011, 08:21:26 pm »
Simple Fortress is just a slightly tweaked world generator and embark that allows your dwarves to carry far more supplies initially.

Also the starting abilities of your dwarves have been selected to some useful professions.

This is designed to give you plenty of time (A couple years) to learn the ropes and how to handle your fortress without the initial pressures that are usually placed on a fortress.

With food and drink taken care of, with simple weapons and armors already supplied, and with plenty of raw materials you can take your time and learn how the intricate industries of dwarf fortress interact.

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=3802

Just download and unzip into your dwarf fortress directory.

Then Generate a new world using "Simple Fortress" World preset.  (It increases the embark points and also makes the world a bit less extreme)

Then When you play choose "Simple fortress" As the embark profile and you will have a large amount of goods per-selected that should make your initial years far less hectic.

*** Updated to be compatible with 0.34.06 ***
Tweaked worldgen prams.
Tweaked embark skills slightly.

*** Updated to be compatible with 0.31.21 ***
Added mineral frequency to the file
Added some more of the newer industries requisite animals
Added hematite back in since it is likely it will be available at embark
switched from limestone to Marble as the flux as it seems to be available far more often.
Tweaked down temperature a bit more.

It will be epic to have our little honey and pollination microcreatures in the game.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What do you think is going on here?
« on: December 13, 2010, 12:42:03 am »
I have dwarves walking through a refuse pile, there is nothing dangerous in the pile as far as I can tell, however, occasionally a dwarf will get red wounds to his feet, and become paralyzed and die from suffocation.

Is he being exposed to something from one of the megabeasts laying dead in there or something?

9
I am a libertarian, but even I understand eminent domain....

There are a lot of glitches with owned items and many annoyances...  I would really like to see an INIT option where dwarves would be unable to claim things.

This would help in a few way's with certain gameplay issues and bugs.

#1. The game slows way down when a dwarf claims an item outside of a burrow and tries to path to it to place it in his room.

#2. Owned Items get into doors and such and being owned prevents their removal.

#3. They make bedrooms look ugly, even with a million cabinets. (IMO)

#4. Dwarves that claim things invaders drop are usually valuable dwarves with nothing to do at that moment... They claim it then go out and get themselves killed...

#5. FPS seems to suffer due to some bug with owned items I cannot identify but causes dwarves to always try to "Store owned item" and not finish it.

#6. Military dwarves seem to be tripped up by owned items, I am not exactly sure the mechanism, but they seem to find one and stand on top of it for hours with FPS rates dropping like a stone till the item is forbidden.  Seems rare and many times the dwarf will figure out something is wrong and do something different, but not all the times...

While I realize many of these things are bugs, it would be nice if we could just eliminate the behavior for a while till things get settled.

10
While I know the reason we are forced to save a fortress no matter what happens is to heighten the sense of danger and permanence to all of our choices... while the game is in alpha could we have separate save and exit routines.. Maybe even have the ability to make multiple saves when we are tracking down little quirks in our mods or whatever.

I for one would REALLY appreciate an exit without a save as there is a lot of times I have tweaked a mod and I would like to just leave a fortress without bothering to wait 50 seconds to save and just dump the data as I have only played maybe 10 seconds total just to check results... with being forced to save sometimes messing up my ability to run my next test (Hence why I kill the task, and have turned all warnings about me killing tasks off... Still kinda a bastardized way of doing it)

I know that successful fortress are the kind of thing you wish to discourage in the name of Fun, so could we have a init file option for it, maybe with it defaulting to current behavior, but allowing us who like to fiddle with things to bypass the mechanic...

DF Modding / Profit's Item Annihilator
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:45:49 pm »
My Item Annihilator mod, destroys useless stone and now a bunch of useless armors.

NOW BURNS WORTHLESS CLOTHES THAT SIEGES BRING!

Item Annihilator download link
( Tested to version 0.34.08 )

Just unzip the archive into your Dwarf Fortress/raw/objects folder and REGEN.

#1 Place a workshop in an area you have been mining. (Build->Workshops->Stone Annihilator)

#2 Set a couple dwarfs labors to Furnace operator

#3 Select the type of stone you wish destroyed, and set it to repeat..

#4 Sit back and watch as annoying trouble stone is removed from existence!!!!

(Build->Workshops->Incinerator)
The Item Incinerator Currently handles all cloth/yarn/silk/bone/leather clothing types.  It will on occasion produce a pile of ash. (1 in 20 chance)     I personally would recommend using the ash for fertilizer, soap making, or clear glass manufacture but the next release may have a way of destroying it as well if you prefer.  Not that it will ever reach a large amount, but my OCD knows few bounds.

Please note there is a side effect which is only the stone from stone layers are marked as economic stone and you have to set which stone you want to be used in the Z->Stone screen.  IMO this is kinda handy so you don't accidentally make rainbow mechanisms and chairs.

Old Versions:
Stone Annihilator
Stone Annihilator with Obsidian Metal extractor

As always if you notice any bugs send a message.

DF Modding / Community Mods and Utilities v0.28.181.40d and below.
« on: March 28, 2010, 08:38:21 pm »
This is the archive of old mods for dwarf fortress.   They for the most part will not work with the new version.  Many may have the old version and the new version available so be careful when choosing mods.

Tutorials: If your having any problems overcoming the steep learning curve of dwarf fortress these are the things to check out.

The Complete and Utter Newby Tutorial for Dwarf Fortress If you are completely mystified by dwarf fortress, start here =)
Dwarf Fortress Wiki This is an excellent source of information on dwarf fortress, and has tutorial pages devoted to all levels of player.
Dwarf fortress video tutorialsThese are videos created to help instruct new players on care and feeding of a fortress.

Essential Utilities: These utilities take some of the repetition out of many of the common tasks, or can be used to repair things when they break

Dwarf Fortress Tweak You can change edit most of the things in DF with this
Dwarf Manager This allows you to quickly edit your dwarves jobs
Dtil Eliminates the autopause while digging!!!! Other fun uses include being able to transmute Microline to Adamantium, or if you just prefer to not have it discolor your walls you can transmute any vein to any other type of rock. *including sands*  If you want to conserve your feeling of smug superiority but lack the ability to build lava proof mechanisms, you can transmute native aluminum to bauxite.
Dwarf Therapist This is a program similar to dwarf manager,  It  has a couple different features AND it is coded in C++.

Dwarf Fortress Mods: These change Dwarf fortress and alter its balance sometimes adding new abilities and items into the game.

Melt That stone This is a mod I made. It allows you to melt any stone you don't like to get rid of it.

Ice Mod Allows ice (water) to be smelted into a stone (for crafts and construction) and a bar (for furniture, armor, weapons, etc), and has a reaction for ice beds.
Soil is fun mod Adds several realistic changes to the soil layers, including the use of peat as fuel.
The Wonderment Mod The Wonderment Mod makes changes to minerals, metals, and gems to focus on the partially medieval, partially fantasy setting that most of us feel is appropriate for dwarves.
Raptor Mod Appears to be raptors which shred dwarfs.
Dwarvemon Umm... Some horror mod with insidious creatures. The most horrific being the pikachu.
Relentless Assault Adds a number of new enemies.  Attackers are weak early on but advance rapidly.
MESOZOIC DWARVES Dwarfs and Dinosaurs... What could go wrong?
Metal Mod Add's "realistic" amounts of metal from each ore reaction.
Haspen's Little Mod Looks like he made a mod for the same reason I piped magma and water all around in my fort... Cause he was bored. =) Seriously though.. new metals, new races. All good stuff.
Immortal Dragons Mod Do you like dragons? Do you like mass death? Do you hate to see dwarves not on fire? This could be your favorite mod then.
Moogle mod Apparently it adds Moogles which I believe are from the final fantasy series of games.

Dwarfletter Gothic Tileset "Dwarfletter is a tileset  incorporating a clean, Dwarvenly styled typeface.  It comes in a variety of flavors, including angular, round, and square walls, plus a vanilla-compatible version that is the whole of 437 done in the appropriate style "

Total Conversion mods: These can convert the entire dwarf fortress play experience into something else

Fallout Mod This mod brings the fallout universe to dwarf fortress
Zombie Mod Play as the survivors of the zombie Apocalypse
The Elder Scrolls Mod
Age of Shadows
40k Fortress
Samurai Fortress Samurai Fortress aims to be a total conversion mod of DF, turning it into a mythical age of Japan.
Avernum Based on Avernum game series.
Dwemer Fortress (The Elder Scrolls) The 2nd TES based total conversion, which is acceptable, play morrowind, and you will understand why.  The mod also looks well done. You will get to play as the Dwemer, who if you play morrowind are the race of dwarves that mysteriously vanish.

Modding Utilities: These are tools that help with modding your fortress.

This is the modding guide on the Dwarf Fortress wiki, which may be helpful.
Notepad++ syntax highlighting for DF raws This makes modding a little clearer
World Gen log parser v1.3: Perl utility script to help make sense of all of your civs, sites, and populations. Very handy for watching how your civ changes effect world gen.
Executable version of the log parser. Janus made this for people who don't want to much with Perl.
DF Word Generator v1 Perl script to build new language files. Obviously quite useful for anyone who wants custom languages for new civs. You will need to be able to run perl to use this, since you change the actual script for each civ.
Regen or Not? This is a simple thread that tells you what changes require a world regeneration.
DwarfHeightmap This is allows you to directly set many of the starting parameters of your lands using images as height maps and temperature maps. Very powerful and intuitive.
Urist McModder
Dwarf Temp Tool This tool allows you to convert Kelvin, Fahrenheit and even the Celsius temperature scale to the dwarf fortress units of temperature.
Raw File editor Adds a nice GUI when mucking with raw files, rather than just using notepad.

Miscellaneous mods and utilities: These do not fit neatly into other categories, if they become numerous I will make new sections for them.

Modbase Supposedly simplifies the install of mods to your game, some users reported it unstable so make a backup before you use it.
Lifevis This utility allows you to see your fortress in three dimensions. Can make external constructions look awesome
Sean Mirrsen's compiled modpack includes Martial Arts and Minerals mods, plus others
Visual Fortress
Khazad
3Dwarf/Dwarvis
Ogredwarf
Embark anywhere In my humble opinion this should be named "disembark anywhere"... or "embark to anywhere"... but anyhow, it allows you to start your fortress in areas not normally allowed.
Stonesense - The isometric visualizer Makes for really nice visualization.
DFHack Looks like it is an attempt to make cross platform memory hacking. Still in very early stages.
Remote DF View A remote controller for Dwarf fortress, Still in early stages.
DF Designer Allows you to plan your fort outside of dwarf fortress.
Spellcraft Is Reborn! An external utility which hacks in some *admittedly highly original* spell ideas.
Quickfort A template based construction tool for Dwarf Fortress. Very quick =)
Carriontrooper's DF Mega Mix A big ass pile of mods piled into one massive mod. Don't know how well it works or anything but looks interesting.
Dwarf Companion This program allows for various values in dwarf fortress to be directly edited.  It is VERY rough around the edges and frequently crashes and displays wrong data, but still can be carefully used to fix and improve some things inside DF.
Slavery enhancer 4*pi This program allows various other races to be drafted into the military and to become haulers.
History/World to XML converter  It takes the current world history/site and population files and converts them to an XML format

DF General Discussion / Can you feel it?
« on: January 15, 2010, 09:18:05 pm »
Can you feel the power of a new DF release coming from the future.. Flowing through your body?

I can, I am betting we are only about 12 days away from a buggy release and only maybe a month away from one that actually works pretty good.

* does happy dance!

It's been far to long, but I can feel its close!

DF Suggestions / Slowdown investigation
« on: December 19, 2009, 08:03:08 am »
Can you look at what is causing the slowdown when large area's of ramps or smoothing jobs are designated.

Large area's of stones can be set to be mined without the massive slowdown(even when reveled), so there must be something different about those two options.

DF Suggestions / Add blood capacity to raws.
« on: December 10, 2009, 04:30:35 am »
I was reading the topic here -> http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=45748.0 and someone mentioned how much more blood an elephant has than a human.

I think that the volume of blood a creature has would be a seriously good addition to the raws.  While many creatures obviously do not have blood, those that can bleed should have a set volume so that an elephant and a human which currently bleed about the same from a wound would have drastically different times before they die from blood loss.

Maybe a tag like this for a mouse
[BLOOD_VOL:1]

Maybe a tag like this for a dwarf
[BLOOD_VOL:100]

and maybe a tag like this for an elephant
[BLOOD_VOL:16000]

This would also be useful for determining how much contamination the creature could release in case of it being shot near water.

*Note: values are examples and are irrelevant. Obviously they would be carefully designed and crafted by our loving toady.
