Didn't the Republican candidate already sue over it?  So yes, expect attempts to spread it anywhere else in the country to be met with maximum resistance.
Yes, but the matter was settled Maine law before the election. If he had a complaint about the constitutionality, he should have filed it way before losing.

But yeah, I expect you'll see the GOP put up quite a fight against it. I'm hard-pressed to think of a state/region where it could potentially help them.
Deep blue states, people are going to be more likely to vote Green, Socialist, etc. but they're also going to be ranking GOP candidates dead last.
Deep red states, they already have a lock on, why change?
Purple states, hard to say what would happen, but I feel like the Right doesn't "waste" its votes on third parties as much in any case (with the possible exception of the Libertarian party in some places).

Getting back to actual political news, Dems flipped another House seat in Maine, thanks to ranked-choice voting.

Quote
Poliquin narrowly led Golden, 46.2% to 45.6%, after first-place votes were counted. But more than 8% of Maine's voters backed one of the two independent candidates in the race, Tiffany Bond and Will Hoar.

Quote
Golden won 50.5% to Poliquin's 49.5%, Maine Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap told reporters Thursday afternoon. The flip means Democrats have picked up 33 House seats so far in 2018, with seven races still undecided. Democrats lead in five of those seven seats, all of which are Republican-held districts.

Exciting times if you're an electoral reform advocate, although this loss means that Republicans are now likely to view anything other than FPTP as a Communist plot to corrupt our natural voting essence.

Not really back yet but... maybe by Christmas at this rate? I'unno. Area's been pretty well screwed over, heh.
What, Trump didn't come down and throw some paper towels and magically fix everything?
THE MEDIA LIED TO ME

Holy shit, welcome back.  :o

It is a bit rich to hear a Brit complaining about anybody else's bid at "world hegemony".

Furthermore, the article you quote explicitly supports the notion that EuroCorps (or whatever they're calling it) is intended to fill the gap left by a very plausible US (and UK?) withdrawal from NATO, not so they can bring Merkelism to the world at the barrel of a gun.

This isn't a new idea. And not surprisingly, it last gained traction and prominence during the Bush years, when the US started making all sorts of unilateral foreign policy moves. If the US can elect a rational government who doesn't want to tear up the norms of the international system (which would mean neither Trump nor Sanders), the push for a European unified military would fall apart.

Yeesh. I genuinely feel sorry for y'all, then.
I'm not trying to reverse-slut-shame (prude-shame?) or anything, but dayum. When the main reason for not having sex is "Meh, what's the point?" there's some serious depression going on, imho.

You have out-slacked the slacker generation.
Why is it deeply important to you that people have sex? Sex is not actually that great.
Cause I'm pretty solidly sex-positive, and feel like it can be pretty great? And cause I see a lot of people echoing things I said and felt when I was in my early 20's, and then had an abusive marriage in my 30s, and often wish I could go back and have actually had an active sex life in my early 20s, when all I lacked was confidence and self-esteem? I would have been far less likely to have wound up in that abusive marriage, for starters.

Umm..guys? There's this thing called birth control?

You don't literally pop out a baby every time you put your hoohoodilly in her cha-cha. Especially with birth control.
Like, if that's the main thing keeping young people from having sex, then those abstinence-only classes are REALLY working.

Saying that there is a constant attempt to create a USE is the the same as "Wyoming rancher muttering about the government trying to put the Mark of the Beast on his cattle and how vaccines are a secret CIA mind-control program"? Sure, if you had the vice president literally declaring that that's what they want to happen, maybe. Are you that deep in denial, Redking? Or are you just that uneducated?
No, I don't see a USE model as something nefarious. I'm talking about the stuff like "Brexit was a German plot to break Britain's power" or "Brussels is secretly trying to allow Muslims to swamp Europe and something something our precious white culture".

@LW: M8, you were Making Shitposting Great Again for pretty much the whole of 2016 in Ameripol.

Also not sure how looking to have Europeans use the Euro when buying from Europeans is "supplanting" the US. I'm surprised you're not bitching about us dirty Yanks and our currency hegemony.

Still doesn't completely answer why you kids aren't out there fucking like weasels in heat, though.

Well, it's not really worth it, is it? It does nothing sustainable for your brand or your career, it's a poor source of social capital, and it carries with it inherent risks of babies, diseases, legal entanglements and feelings.

It's just a poor return on investment, all things considered.
When "feelings" are considered a risk, that's kind of indicative of the root problem, imho.  :-\

@nenjin: The preponderence of sites like Tinder (which is what kicked off this whole sadsack discussion, iirc) begs to differ. I mean, yeah, those sites are supposed to reduce the amount of effort and socialization needed but it still takes effort. And there's still millions upon millions of people making that effort.

Now, there's a LOT of people whose "effort" could be boiled down to sending an unsolicited dick pic with a message saying "hey bb u want fuck?" but to me that's not a symptom of some deep social disaffection or a noble, poetic soul burdened down by his own social anxiety....that's just a lazy douchebag.

Couple that with the inherent isolation of otaku culture, and you have people who get stuck in feedback loops about ridicule, and end up with bad self-image, and bad opinions of other people in meat-space, which reinforces the digital-only communication bottleneck that contributes to the isolation problem.
So you're saying socially awkward loners get on the Internet, where they're made fun of by other socially awkward loners, and thus become more socially awkward and loner? Actually, I can buy that.
Still doesn't completely answer why you kids aren't out there fucking like weasels in heat, though.

And I refuse to believe it's a generational thing. Or if it is, it's post-Millenial. Because I know a number of Millenials (and have slept with a number of Millenials) >_>

So you would see us continue our wasteful and pointless squabbling until we finally eliminate ourselves in a (long overdue) apocalyptic war?
I find it hard to believe anyone can look at the European Union as the solution to wasteful and pointless squabbling ;p
Which is also why anyone talking about the EU making a bid for world domination has to understand why I have to take a break for some convulsive laughter before reading the rest of their comment.

Euroskepticism seems to have reached the sort of doomsaying and conspiratorial tone as, say, a Wyoming rancher muttering about the government trying to put the Mark of the Beast on his cattle and how vaccines are a secret CIA mind-control program.

I'm surprised no one has hinted that there's a Franco-German fleet of black helicopters that exist for covert ops to silence their critics.

I think the West, at least, has a pretty grim culture that requires men to be manly where that is a penalty, and to conform entirely to a modern way of acting (passive and nonaggressive) where that is a penalty.  As such, a man who complains or fights is less manly or a shitlord, respectively.  We are vilified in every aspect, and it is (and the stats back me up here) ending in suicide.  Women can shout and scream and attack, but a man who wants to retain his standing and his freedom has no recourse, and it's making us more bitter, bottled and lonely.
When I see this kind of complaint I think "what the hell West are you living in then?"

Now I'll grant you that I'm not the most social person, but I do interact with people voluntarily now and again, here in the deep red district I live in, and I have never felt like any of that was true. The West is not just one culture.
^^^^
This.

I do pretty well with not having to complain or fight about shit, and when I do, hordes of feminazis don't magically appear to oppress me in the name of the Matriarchy. Probably because I'm not complaining about how hard it is to be a man and how unfair it is that women....I dunno, have rights and a voice?  ???

I'm not some uber-ripped gym jock, and I'm not some neutered sopmilk. There is in fact a happy medium within which hundreds of millions of men exist every day in "the West".

mhuh mhuh MSH you're just a scaremonger, everything is fine and can be reformed to be perfect, hey what's that coming over the hill
Yet another thing you damn millenials are killing.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have my polyamorous harem to keep satisfied. It's a hard job, but somebody's got to do it.

You ever wonder if David Cameron is sitting somewhere watching all this, sipping a whiskey neat, and thinking "Jesus Christ am I glad that insufferable tart got stuck with this steaming pile and not me."

Oh...a quick research indicates he's thinking of making a return to UK politics. Predictably, most people are like "PLZ NO, GO KILL URSELF KTHXBYE".

Also, this article from the Daily Express is a riot, insinuating that Brexit was all secretly some diabolic plot by Angela Merkel to....get Britain to do something really stupid all on its own?
