Creative Projects / Story of a dwarf and an elf
« on: July 03, 2012, 03:17:47 pm »
In a human town where from time to time an adventurer or storyteller comes by is an elven poet drinking a lot of beer in the tavern. But than a dwarven bard who just arrived in town enters the tavern. Seeing as they are a poet and a bard they naturally only speak in verse. Thus begins the elf:

Elf:
What must my eyes endure?
What is this odor of manure?
Such an ugly person of short stature,
Is very detrimental to my drunken rapture.

Dwarf:
From afar mountains i travel'd 'ere,
Thought this tav'rn looks like beer.
But tis' not a welcome i hold deer,
In sight of this elf i can nay not cheer.

Elf:
And even if the gods had made me mute,
I could not welcome such a brute,
As is a dwarf, that with his stench acute,
would better fit in a garbage chute.

Dwarf:
On elvish tongues words do swell,
your speech 'arvest nothing that is well.
Of your kind many before me fell,
And have by my axe since gone to hell.

More stanza if/when inspiration strikes.

~*~

Any feedback is very welcome. Being no native speaker to her i still feel a little insecure doing poetry in the english language, so any hints to problems that may stem from that are also encouraged. (especially how good the rhymes sound to native speaker. I'm afraid my pronunciation is far from perfect)

Adventures can't 'C'onstruct either ...

Dwarves don't live in in huts? The natural behaviour for a dwarf is do dig himself out some shelter underground. If ever dwarves engage in above-ground-architecture it is only to erect some absurdly monstrous non-useful oversized monument for all races to see what dwarves are capable of. (Be that a "city", a temple, a fortress/tower/citadel or whatever)

I am more and more ashamed to be from a country that allows this....

Richest country on earth; 5% of the population; 23% of the world's incarcerated....

There you go: more fuel to your anger
These things really shouldn't be put in the hands of private for-profit organizations.

Another thing that strikes me as quite crazy. Apparently conservatives are angry at Justice Roberts because, you know: how can he possibly dare to CHANGE HIS MIND AFTER HEARING THE CASE.
Quote
The dissatisfaction of conservatives grew as they studied the decision and found clues that the chief justice might initially have been in the majority to strike down the law, only to switch sides. A report from CBS News on Sunday that he had changed his mind added to the anger.

Just posting to let you guys, who are making this thread (especially SAFry) and also the first part know that this is a great source of information for me. You make the worlds i gen fit my wishes better :)

you can reduce things like musicality and creativity to get more points for attributes that actually matter

You're all aware that if those guys take over the country you'll see concentration camp, right?
This is no laughing matter, you're very possibly reading the next "mein kampf".
Hyperbole, much? The Republicans have had dominance over the country before, and for all of their bad polices I get the feeling they'd have some dissent if they started building concentration camps for whatever reason.

Fortunately not all republicans are of the texan/tea-party type. Else it would not be so much of an hyperbole.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Grow above ground trees inside?
« on: June 30, 2012, 07:18:16 am »
If i put a roof above my garden will (above ground) trees still grow there?

205
Edit: Also, my earlier appreciation for the role of luck in the lives of our ancestors has been expanded and continues to grow, at a N^2*(1+Probability of things going bad rate.)

so ... pretty much cubic?

But conflicts with the "all dwarves have pteromerhanophobia"-hypothesis which i think is a well established one.

Nice one :)
So we are able to compile a list of traits that will be the same for every dwarf in a given civilization/world/fortress?

I am told that within a civilization, all dwarves have the same hair and eye color.

There are three independent saves mixed in to the data, with several dozen to several hundred dwarves in each. Three isn't very many, so it's possible there's some interesting stuff there that isn't showing up.

How independent? If they are from different worlds the dwarfs can't be from the same civilization.

That's great. :)

By the way. Do we know what this is? Because if the kid inherits this in next to all cases from father _and_ mother that means both parents have next to always the same value here. That leads to the conclusion that either there is only one possible value and all the dwarfs in the data have that (is the data from just one or multiple fortesses? is it from just one or multiple genned worlds?) Or there are multiple values possible but only those that have the same value can become a couple.

appearance.colors.3
    mother: 0.999994
    father: 0.999994

edit: besides that i do not know what the data looks like but maybe something like a chiČ-Test or Goodmans lambda would give us a better clue whats going on?

If that's supposed to be the correlation coefficient (covariance divided by product of standard deviations) something went awry because that is always in the interval [-1,1] whereas here we have values above two and once even -57 (at status.current_soul.preferences.9.item_subtype)

If you don't mind sharing the source i don't mind taking a look at it for the error. (depending on what it is written in of course .. i am not going to debug brainfuck code or other such weirdness)
