DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help me with a megaproject: Kingdom

Hey, so I'm trying out my first megaproject of making a kingdom with a castle, mote, walls, home quarter, industry quarter, the works (using humans of course).  So I got my first z-level of wall built that made my fort into a 50by130 plot with a well in the dead center, guard towers at each corner, a 3 tile wide space for my drawbridge in the center of the northern wall, and a 10by20 underground greenhouse being "floored over" as we speak.  I'm in warm weather with a brook, lots of trees, and chalk.

I was thinking of making lots of little square houses for my humans in its own quarter, and having a big castle in the south-center area.  My walls will be two z-levels high (as far as my mote is) with 3-4 z-level high guard towers at each corner.  I want to know any tips for using my space efficiently, I was thinking of using some kind of grid system but I wanted to ask you guys for tips.

I'm trying to construct an underground greenhouse for all my above-ground plant needs...but when I channel out an area and construct rough chalk floors above it the area beneath it is "indoors" will light still get through for my strawberries?

DF Gameplay Questions / Farm plots

hey, I'm trying to grow some above ground plants and I'm having trouble...a lot of the land has some grass/shrub/sapling on it which interferes with my plans.  Is there a way to  clear out the area or something? Do you know of any convenient methods?

My guys have a brown arrow pointing down blinking on their body/tile (I use MayDay's tile set) does this mean their starving? which seems strange because I brought 100 food and its only the 1st year...is it because I'm doing  a human fort?

DF Gameplay Questions / Tower floors

I am trying to make a tower and I don't know how to construct floors on the 2nd level, since its "open space" I cant seem the place the floors anywhere, how do I build new floors on areas that are "open space"?

Edit: When I try to place it adjacent to a "floor" (top of a wall) it says "No access to building material non-economic item"

So I need to build a giant corkscrew for my screw pump, right? And I don't have any usable metal with me atm so I decide to make one out of wood in a carpenters workshop, but I cant find anything about building trap parts in it, whats the letters I press to get to the wooden trap components/giant corkscrew?

DF Suggestions / Generic Nobles

So seeing at there is only 1 noble for each job, and seeing as i've been playing a lot of Medieval 2: Total War, i've got a idea...

You would make a generic noble class (like anyone who currently isn't a noble is a mid-lower class).  What the generic class would do is they would want slightly better rooms, wont do usual labor tasks like mining or fishing, and would want to buy their own weapons/armor/horse(in human fort) with their own money using DF's economy system. Meaning they can be drafted. They would be slightly more powerful then regular mid-low class peasants that get drafted, and would also be the only choice of soldiers when making your king's bodyguard corps.  And maybe there could be some multi-person jobs that are only available to the generic nobles.  So what do you guys think?

How do I make my massive amount of chalk stone usable for making things? I'm in the status menu and it says "Economic Stones are reserved for use by the listed tasks" even though it is red in the stone restriction section.

DF Gameplay Questions / Helbards and other human weapons

So i've decided to try out making a large castle on "Human Fort" and i'm currently in the load-up screen, got a nice spot with a brook, plenty of trees, and some mountains for leveling stone, and the whole plot has dolomite (gonna get some steel) so i'm in the load-out screen, right? and i'm thinking of selling an axe or something for extra points, but there aint any axes all I see are "Iron Halberds 2" and so before I set off, does the halberds act the same as the axe? What other weapons should I know about? ect.


TL/DR: Do "Human Fort" Halberds cut wood like "Dwarf Fortress" axes?

DF Gameplay Questions / Crossbowdwarfs dont use archery range

Ok, so I have 3 military dwarfs with crossbows and bolts that are "standing down" I have 5 archery ranges, each one with at least 3 squares of space (one for the target, one for the dwarf, and one open space) it is set up like this

D D D [] []     D=Dwarf
[][][] [] []     []=open space
X X X X X      X=target

They are all set to "Top to Bottom" but despite all of this my crossbowdwarfs refuse to even go near the room, so what am I doing wrong?

What would you guys suggest for a army? Like whats the different uses for axedwarf/hammerdwarf/sworddwarf/speardwarf, and whats a good material for weapons to be made out of, i've mainly been using obsidian shortswords for my dwarves (army of 3) what would you guys suggest?

Hey I started off on a mountain (which is missing lava, though the search said it would have some) and I need to find some fuel like coal and lignite, but I cant seem to find any anywhere! what z-level should I be digging at?

Also, 2 more random things;

1. Can you make a bed out of something besides wood?

2. Whats it like playing human fortress?

So I was wondering, are there any major differences when playing as a race besides dwarfs? I head that dwarfs cant use longswords or bows while elves and humans can, and then there's the whole armor size thing, just curios.

So it was my first year on my 2nd fortress (quite the 1st on the 1st year because I screwed myself over and ended up drowning 1/2 of my dwarfs, lol) and the 1st year caravan came, and everything was normal aside from moving the trade depot around a few times. when they left though, one of them forgot like, all their stuff and I have some crates of silk, some metal armor and other junk lying around right in front of the entrance to my fortress, and I tried organizing these, though, I realized that I seem to not be able to move the stuff aside from the caged animals, so, help!

Also, what was the most silliest thing you had happen to you/did in DF?
