DF Gameplay Questions / Stone weapons and armor

so i'm looking through things to make and I see the option to make armor and weapons out of my rhyodite stone, is this any good? Is obsidion good, or is metal the way to go? and, whats the most interesting item of armor/weapon you made?

hey, i've just started out on a fortress and I noticed all my animals: some horses/donkeys, 2 dogs (and besides my cat who hangs around my food stockpiles all day) just seem to be wandering around outside, climbing a mountain ect., but I want then around my entrance, I got a tin cage although it doesn't seem to be doing anything, so is there a way to get my animals to stay in a specific spot?

DF Bug Reports / Game Window is bugged

so I downloaded the game and put mayday's graphic mode over it but now whenever I start a game, it wont work in full screen because "Mode Switch Failed" and no matter what I do to the .init the window mode is as big as my screen and I can only see half the text up in the upper-right hand corner as apposed to when I first got the game and is ran in a rather small rectangular window which I liked, so can someone help me?

So I just recently heard about how fun this game is from /v/ and wanted to try it out, so I download it but I have a few questions first...

1. Should I do some major read-up on the controls and such first? Or should I just go dicking around until I get the swing of things?

2. Adventure or Fortress first? Which is fun for what?

3. I heard something about "2 different kinds of graphics" or something

4. Whats this about playing as a "human Village"?

Your help is greatly appreciated.
