Well thank you your story has inspired me to not give up on Dwarf fortress. I'll properly watch all of Captain_ducks tutorial videos again, might help me see something I've missed.

I know this question doesn't belong here, but I was just wondering how do I know what my dwarf did to another guy in combat? I've heard stories of peoples dwarfs ripping of limbs and beating things to death with them. Where do I find this info? in announcements?

DF's initial learning curve is more like a learning cliff, essentially the game shoves you off and expects you learn how to fly before you hit the ground.

This made me chuckle a little, it's so true. I also think that's why I'm not getting the full fun tastic experience that Df has to offer as I'm only at a point in which I can sustain the most basic fort. I'm assuming this is like ordering a plain pizza and wondering why it has no flavor. I've also taken some of the advice of making my own fun in Df by naming some of my dwarfs, makes it more interesting to know who that guy is if/when he gets killed. So what I guess I'm asking is, when you started playing dwarf fortress were you having as much fun with it as you are now?

You say you have no grasp of physics?
Good.
Now make me a 20 z-level reverse pyramid with a lavafall on top. It should keep you entertained.

Yes I do understand that there is a lot to do in this game, but right now I don't know how to do that stuff and am just trying to learn how to play the basic game and not loose interest, Ie because most of the time it takes a really long time for me to get anything done in my fort. I also get very little immigrants.

Firstly please don't take this as me saying Df is boring, in fact I think it might be one of the best games ever made.... ever! But for years now I've tried to get my self into the hacky slashy base building fun but I always seem to end up minimizing it to look up how to trade or acquire wealth and I just end up doing something else. As a side note I have not fully grasped the basics of dwarf fortress yet, as previously stated I do not understand trading and wealth. I've also tried attempting something new, like building a water fall (my first time  ??? little scared that my dwarfs will die). So the community how did you find your self able to play dwarf fortress for such a long time and have it hold your attention? Also if you could give me some hints on how to make it more enjoyable (I'm not ready for mega-projects and the like) please drop a comment. Lastly I would like to thank the spell check for all it's done fore me  ;D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to edit Dwarfs gender.
« on: March 27, 2010, 02:28:03 am »
Legolord I love you. That's exactly what I was looking for. Although now that I've gotten there I can't find any thing titles gender. The closes thing i can find to this is "[Genpower: 3]" I don't know what this is, so I just need a little bit more help and then i can finally play a game of dwarf fortress, without out having to wonder why I don't have any dwarf children to wonder around.

DF Gameplay Questions / How to edit Dwarfs gender.
« on: March 26, 2010, 05:56:29 pm »
Well I have a lot of females (as you might know from my thread in the troubleshooting place) and I'm wondering if it might be something gone wrong by maygreen, the tile set. So I'm wondering how i can get to the files that show a gender tag by my dwarfs? if you do know and would Like to tell me please, please tell me in step by step instructions like so.

File1>file2>file3>dwarf gender

Thanks

DF Bug Reports / Re: [Maygreen tile set] everying is female!
« on: March 26, 2010, 12:26:10 am »
Thanks for the reply, but there's no way I could have done that, As I never have gone into the raw thingy before. Only once to change sound to "ON". Also I think that the problem comes from maygreen, as I tried the original DF and it seemed I had a quite a lot of females, but I still had a few males. So I guess the question is, is any one else having this problem if so how can it be fixed? if not what are some other good tile set?

So I've uninstalled then reinstalled maygreen and dwarf fortress and I'm still having the same problem. So where would I find the tag that shows the dwarfs gender? I would like to go check if maygreen has messed something up. Also I would really appreciate if who ever shows me how to get to the gender tags to show them in order like so

"blah blah>blah12>blah file

DF Bug Reports / [Mayday tile set] everying is female!
« on: March 25, 2010, 09:01:17 am »
I'm sorry I didn't tell you the version, I think it's the newest one (of mayday that is). Also some of you might remember this thread from a while back, it didn't quite get resolver  :P. Since then I've reinstalled Df quite a few times, but one problem is I can't delete all the original files for the original Df because when I downloaded it I didn't put it in a folder so all the files are all over the place. (Actual game problem down here) So what I've noticed is that every living thing in my game is always female at the start any ways, is there a tag for this in the raw? What happens usually is I'll start out with all females (I just you the "embark" button I never plan) then maybe if I'm lucky I'll get one maybe two males in an immigration. Although it's not uncommon to just have female. So can you help me?

PS: I'll be gone for a while so wont be able to respond, but will appreciate the suggestions when I get back. Also how can I check gender other then pressing "v"?

thank you.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Do I need more workshops?
« on: December 30, 2009, 05:16:52 am »
I've read all the post and there quiet helpful. Only problem is I'm still a stranger to most of the fun stuff in dwarf fortress, pits, making arenas etc. This is due to the fact that I'm still learning how to play  ;D. So that's why I found threads with these kinda responses very helpful.

DF Gameplay Questions / Do I need more workshops?
« on: December 29, 2009, 06:08:47 pm »
All of my forts only seem to last to about 50 people before something goes wrong (mostly wells  >:() but that's another thread. The problem I face is once I reach a population of about 50 I don't have any more jobs for my dwarfs, it's become self sufficient IE I can feed every one and every one has place to sleep. I usually only have one type of each workshop (sometimes two for masonry). So should I have more workshops if so which ones and how come? (other then brewery i have plenty of those) Also I tend to be very slow in producing weapons/ armor for my military, again I only have one of each workshop. If I had more would my production speed up? Just gonna slip in another question here. It says in the wiki a well can still draw water from a source as long as the source is under the well, give or take a few z levels. My water source was 2 z levels down from my well and dwarfs would say complain about there being no water in the well. Yes the water source was 7/7.

If you've read this far thanks for being so patient and hopefully helpful  ;D

DF Gameplay Questions / Fortress still full of women
« on: December 21, 2009, 09:14:58 pm »
Some of you might have remembered my old thread about my fortress souly consisting of women (oh god my grammar was so bad back then =P). After that fortress fell I stop playing for a while and uninstalled, recently I have reinstalled the game and started a few new fortress. Only to my horror to realize that my fortress can't have no babies and is still only chicks. I have never installed any other mods other then maygreen (tile set) so other then that the game should be running smoothly. Ok so if any one could help me out with this one I would appreciate it, thanks.
