^^^ A spoiler that you should predict 50 pages in.

(Excellent work! I'll try something myself. Not that it's anything especially good, but it was a useful exercise. 260 words.)

A butterfly fluttered by me, right by my face. Yellow wings caught my eyes--a monarch. Flying south, no doubt, to find a mate.

The sinking sun was somewhat before her, and she skimmed the green grass, casting a stark shadow below her. She landed on a flower and started drinking nectar, her shadow beside and below her, for a few fleeting instants, breathless. It was like an old photograph, with the colors melding together, a moment of togetherness.

I wouldn't have looked further, but the girl I was meeting was late, just late, and I had nothing better to do. Phone was on in case she had to call and cancel again. No need to check it again. That would have been clingy, and I was trying hard not to be.

The butterfly took off, the shadow trailing behind, tethered to the ground. She flew up, a thing of glinting, golden beauty, and fluttered about a nearby pond, looking for something. The shadow seemed wanting, now, yearning. If shadows had voices, he would have called to her. Her reflection passed near him, light and dark playing over one another's surfaces--but it wasn't real, just a stupid fantasy. He was close--if he could just get a little closer, just had a chance to make things right...

What time had she said she'd be here? So she was thirty minutes late, and no call?

I looked up, and she had flown away, leaving her shadow behind, until it faded away.

Got dinner alone. Guess I saved money that way.

Piracy usually happens only when people aren't willing to pay for the product in any regard, whatsoever. That said, making piracy harder to do isn't a bad idea--it'll force people to pirate less, and either go without or buy more. (Generally, they'll go without, but that's not a horrible thing, in the long run.)

Yeeeeeah, metallurgy is pretty complex. Plating would cover these suggestions much more efficiently.

Granted. Insalating something is probably infusing something with salt. Org takes too much salt and dies. Somehow your house burns down, too.

I wish I didn't have a head cold.

If you introduced the magma into a thick vein of coal, it ought to stay plenty hot for a while down there.

But then, why bother with the magma?  Why not just use the coal?

Siege tactic? Creating a break to fend off underground enemies for a while?

Granted, but it turns out that cats are just manifestations of Cthulu. Enjoy the insanity.

I wish Pandora would give me better music.

^^^ How big did cities usually get in Medieval times? That should be the target, I'd think.

Burrows would work. You could also treat certain rooms (like workshops!) as separate, and abstract them out when looking at the larger fortress. Not the most eloquent solution, and it'd only really be helpful in assembly-line like workshops (smelters and forges in one room, for example) or rooms with a lot of people (like barracks!). It'd also fail if everyone's outside the rooms that are being abstracted.

As usual, thanks for the answers, Toady! I'm looking forward to this release so much it hurts.

Granted. Your computer crashes every time you boot up DF, because it uses too much system resources.

I wish that computers make sense.

I'd like to say that this would have to be a viable game mechanic--that is, we could have levers that take some time to pull, during which time dwarves can spot the intruder/child/horny cat, but if you need those magma gates open right away, you've got a problem on your hands.

Granted. But, ironically, it's bolted down.

I wish for for the ability to unsee things, selectively.

Been trying this out, and I'm having trouble. It looks like the program is skipping keystrokes. I'll try playing with the keypress duration and Delay multiplier some more, see if that helps. I'm working with Mayday version 18, on a (somewhat slow) laptop.

Granted. Turns out that everyone loved you for your allergies. You spend the rest of your life alone and friendless.

I wish I had five more hours of sleep without sleeping through any major events.

SHB: We'd have to implement some sort of degeneration of formations linked to movement and attacking, but that would work.

Craftling: Definitely! Anything that can't path to a location a certain number of squares from the enemy without getting too close to the enemy should get a pseudo-morale of infinity plus one. I say pseudo-morale, because they should run when given a chance to escape.

Pie: Good ideas! My only concern is that there should be a breaking point before a fight to the last man. Cohesion could pad out one or two losses, but if a quarter of the squad is dead, people should start seriously thinking of running, especially if they didn't have the highest morale to begin with.

As for shell-shock, I posted a few notes about PTSD a bit before...
I was thinking that the effects of PTSD would be simple to model--you just take anything associated with the war, blood, and death spheres, and make it give the dwarf bad thoughts. When enough bad thoughts accumulate, the dwarf would try to find someplace to hide, or something. If in combat, they hesitate before taking certain actions, and their combat "rolls" should be a lot more erratic. Not sure how to give dwarves the PTSD tag, though.

I still am not sure how to give dwarves a PTSD tag--possibly if they become very unhappy due to witnessing a few deaths?

Akjosch: I like this, but we're going to have to think up ways for the player to influence cohesion. Currently, all we have is training.

I'll see about editing the OP to include all these suggestions.
