The pets sneak through open doors. Use an airlock system of doors separated by enough distance for the one behind to close.

Honestly, though, pets are a nuisance and a tax on FPS. The superior option is to let the spikes murder them, and administer therapy to the bereaved with high-quality booze and alcohol, and a legendary dining room.

I tried that, but I could never find more than a layer or two, and rarely anything useful in them. I considered myself lucky to get a soil layer.
Of course, iron wasn't hard to come by then, as I was able to bootstrap a steel industry from imported wood from caravans, and imported iron from the goblins.

Also, the wiki is your friend. It's way faster for questions like this than waiting for a forum reply.

Only ever found one vein of coal in that version. Damn lack of sedimentary layers near magma.

The best way to prevent masterwork destruction angst is to have the dwarf churn out hundreds of them, so he gets less attached to each one.

You can't! They could be lurking, stealthed, right outside your gate. Just beyond your guard dogs. Across the map, camping the remains of the last squad.

I must channel magma into my comp room and have a 2/7 tile under my chair now!

Don't forget a drawbridge and moat for the door!

Only natural ice walls.

It won't melt constructions, built via the d-b-C command. It WILL, however eat through non-magma-safe buildings. And part of buildings. A steel bridge with an unsafe mechanism will be deconstructed once the lava flows over it.

Pitting in groups is a bad idea. I got carried away and tossed about 10 goblins and a couple of rats into a pit, and some escaped and caused chaos.
And possibly unrelated, but someone's child fell into the caverns.

Yes. Marksdwarves firing on a live target fire like machineguns compared to training, wrestlers get so many holds in it's absurd, and weapondwarves hack away merrily on live opponents.

OK but it's still a matter of how many hits you do, as opposed to the damage/opponent?

I.e. hitting an armored goblin with a wooden stick gives the same experience as decapitating a dragon with one strike?

Don't know.

I know this has probably been asked before, but is there an easy way to limit the number of pets?

Levers for the owners, repeating spikes for the pets.
