DF General Discussion / Dwarf Fortress 2014 Play Along Tutorial
« on: September 18, 2014, 10:08:06 am »
Welcome to the Dwarf Fortress 2014 Play Along Tutorial!

You wanna learn how to play Dwarf Fortress?  Let's learn how to burn elves and decapitate colossi together.  First you need to download Dwarf Fortress.  It's been in development for over 12 years by Tarn and Zach Adams.  Tarn does the programming and they give the game away for free on their website, www.bay12games.com...

They have made some other games, but we want to build fortresses, not get gassed in the trenches of WWI or recruit seamstresses for our neo-liberal agenda.  Click on "Dwarf Fortress", or go to www.bay12games.com/dwarves.

Your new home!  This is the devlog where Toady (Tarn) keeps us up to date with the latest progress with the game.  You can also donate to Bay12 games from this page to support Toady and Threetoe and keep DF development going.

We want to download DF.  There are several download links.  The two main types of DF are "SDL" and "Legacy".  The SDL version has a more modern software renderer that will take advantage of your machine's hardware a bit better and should run faster.  It also allows some extra fancy stuff like zooming the display in and out.  The Legacy version is exactly the same game but with a simpler graphics engine.  In terms of gameplay there is no difference whatsoever between SDL and Legacy, it's a question of performance and some comfort features.  The SDL is the best choice for now.

You have to choose your operating system.  Click on the version for your computer.

Save the zip file.

Locate the zip file you downloaded and extract it to a new folder in a games directory.  For example, "My Documents/Games/Dwarf Fortress/".  Once you look inside you should see a list of files like this...

Now there are lots of things you can fiddle with within the DF folders, namely text files that can customize your play experience and mod the game, but we just want to learn how to play so we're interested in the Dwarf Fortress executable.  Launch it!

Spoiler: Windows 8.1 Note (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Linux 32/64 Note (click to show/hide)

Enjoy the intro movie...

And we've reached the title screen!  Phew.  While Toady's guitar wanders around in the background, make yourself a cup of tea.  Seriously, the next step is going to take a while and if you put the kettle on now things will go much more pleasantly.

Other Games / Persona 5
« on: August 06, 2014, 08:35:53 pm »

To be released in December/Winter (early?) this year 2015 on PS3 and PS4.  And probably coming to Vita sometime I imagine, but that's not announced yet.

2014/9/1 - New teaser trailer!
2014/9/1 - Director posts a message on the Persona Channel

Dude is just thanking a lot of people a lot of times.

2015/2/4 - The Persona channel is having some "live" streaming events on NicoNico TV.  Kuma (Teddy) introduced them at 1pm in a short message that was pretty cute.  The "Main Programme" starts at 18:25 on Thurs 5th Japan time.  Then at around 9pm there is some mystery programme.  I have no idea, but I guess there might be a Persona 5 announcement coming.   :-\  The 2 minute Kuma pre-announcement was weird, but whatever they show will be better for having Kuma involved.
2015/2/6 - It was!  New promo video with in-game footage on the Persona 5 site.  There is a lot of info in there, most notably I guess was the use of real place names that puts the setting in Tokyo.  The style is very Cat's Eye, IMO, which is great because I love that.  Also some references to Persona 2??  (Trying to get into that game right now).  There's another message from Hashino where he talks about the themes being a mix of "Juvenile School" and "Picaresque Romance" (which also sounds awesome) and how the party members might have bad manners and find themselves in situations where they are being chased.  The graphics look stylized enough that a Vita port might be possible...??  No release date yet.

It's a free-to-play multiplayer freeform mystery chat game that broke my Dota addiction.  It is just spectacularly good fun.  You roleplay a character, and go nuts, and it has text to speech dialogue.  Just try it, it's on Steam too.  (Even better with alcohol).

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / How to escape a Dwarf Fortress
« on: July 10, 2014, 08:04:09 pm »
Quick cry for help... starting as a new adventurer in a game-made fortress, how do you get out?  I've been wandering convoluted halls and bedroom corridors looking for the main stairwell for ages now!  Does the minimap help?  How about asking people to lead you somewhere.. but where?

Creative Projects / Bay12 Community Designed Game - Escape a whale
« on: April 16, 2014, 09:55:14 am »
I am terrible at starting stuff that I don't finish, but hey I made a schedule for gaming and programming to fit in my hectic life.  I've heard about IDARB, never played it, but the concept is intriguing.  Community votes on steps to develop a game, programmer makes it happen, you end up with a game.

I think it'd be interesting to see what kind of game Bay12 will suggest, so let's give it a go!

Ground rules
  • Only me programming for the moment.  I`m not interested in that kind of collaboration and generally dislike "everything-and-the-kitchen-sink" game design that results from open projects.
  • Using Java 1.6.  It's multiplatform, I know the language and I have a bunch of gaming libraries I made for graphics, sound, input, netcode etc. already.
  • 2D.
  • I've set aside, hopefully, at least a couple of hours a week to do stuff, possibly more as chance permits.  The goal isn't to make the biggest and best game as fast as possible.
  • This is just for fun, game will be free.
  • What I get out of it is the challenge and enjoyment of making a game (hopefully) and the ancillary benefit of adding to my core libraries for my other projects at the same time.
  • All submitted content will remain copyright of author, so can be removed any time if they wish.
  • I guess all content stands a chance of being removed by the design process.  Please don't submit anything if this would bother you.
  • I have final say in all things, for logistical, technical and stylistic reasons.

Suggestions and Voting
  • Once a suggestion is made other forumites can vote for it.
  • Votes are only positive.
  • Put all suggestions and votes in bold type.
  • New suggestions/additions require 5 supporting votes. (# could change)
  • Alterations/rollbacks require 10 supporting votes. (# could change)
  • Content can be submitted as a suggestion, e.g. artwork or sound or music.
  • Code cannot be submitted.

Schedule
The smaller the winning suggestion, the quicker it is to implement.  Baby steps are good.  once a suggestion is being worked on, the next ones will be voted upon.

tl;dr I haven't got a clue what I'm doing and anything said now will probably count for nada.

With all that out the way, here is your starting point...

Version 0.001
It is a Java 2D application running in 320 by 240 at about 40fps.  It runs in full screen exclusive mode and windowed, toggle with F12.  It accepts keyboard and gamepad inputs.  It reads all the tiles from a DF style .png file.  It is drawing a cycling animation of a dwarf that can be moved with the inputs.  Mouse support is also possible.  Press TAB to exit the application.

You need to run the script with the name that matches your OS; Windows, Max or Linux.
You need Java 1.6.
It may not run, let me know your OS and Java version installed and what happened.

This is all about fun!

ITERATION I
Task 1 - Decide what kind of game we're aiming for.
Task 2 - Decide on the first feature change.

DF Modding / Paladin Inquiries
« on: March 09, 2014, 08:04:49 am »
In the upcoming version, in adventure mode I'd like to roleplay a paladin/holy warrior type guy who gets torn between the struggled of good and evil yada yada.  Vanilla DF has bad/necromancer reactions/secrets, but no good/holy type ones, right?

Briefly searching this board I've got this and this as some hints for "good" secrets, but I'm not sure how this stuff works.

  • If a secret is added to a sphere, will civs within that sphere need to build towers for the secret to be present within the world?
  • Is a tower the only way to learn a secret?
  • Is a secret the best way to go about adding holy powers?
  • Are there any mods which already have this stuff packed?

Play With Your Buddies / Sword of the Stars II - Let's survive
« on: February 27, 2014, 08:10:34 pm »

Sword of the Stars II: End of Flesh

Nice title.  This is a game I daydream about playing when in the bath, but cannot get into for some reason.  I hope I/we can get around this as it should work well in the forum/asynchronous play style, so let's do this!

CURRENT GOAL:  Survive first contact.

SETUP:  Disc galaxy, 6 players.  Standard options, no starting tech.
Spoiler: Setup Screen (click to show/hide)

OUR EMPIRE:  ???
EMPIRE NAME:  ???

Spoiler: Starting Empire? (click to show/hide)

The game has dealt us the Loa Collective to start with.  I've only ever played as Sol Force.  Let me know what faction you want to play, and what our faction name should be.

Other Games / Your Gaming Setup for 2014 and beyond
« on: December 19, 2013, 10:15:49 pm »
I wanna quickly see what machines people are looking at for the next few years before this thread gets buried...

I was Xbox 360, but MS screwed me over with RRoD and poor service for the XBLGold... so Xbone is out and I was gonna go PS4 for this generation, but since I got onto Steam, I'm thinking why bother since most console games come to PC anyway?

Sooo... I'm looking at PC + Nintendo.  They've really won me over with pure games (playing Ocarina of Time 3D now), and I like the look of some WiiU titles.  Plus there is Zero chance of that stuff coming to PC.  Plus money is tight and Nintendo hardware is cheaper.  So my projected setup is...

PC + 3DS + WiiU.

How about you folks?

DF Gameplay Questions / Display Issues in Windows 8.1 - Solved
« on: December 11, 2013, 07:27:48 am »
I may be jumping the gun a bit here, but I just upgraded to Windows 8.1 and the DF seems to be "zoomed in" in fullscreen and windowed mode.  I.e. the top and bottom of the screen is cut off... erk, it's difficult to explain.  I think it may be Windows trying to respect some kind of zoom parameter globally (1900x1080 screen) but I'm not sure.

If anyone had the same problem could you give me a hand?  Thanks.  Will try tinkering now...

edit - So I changed the init.txt PRINT_MODE options and 2D cut off more of the top/bottom text than STANDARD... So I'm thinking there's some funny business with SDL in Windows 8.1 .... ???  Like when I mouse wheel zoom, the screen-display coordinates are changing as well.  I zoom out, and the display rectangle gets smaller.  Ugh.  Can't describe this, will upload pics if necessary.

edit - Solution!

http://kb.sdl.com/?portalid=23&articleid=4959#tab:homeTab:crumb:7:artId:4959

tl;dr  Windows 8.1 automatically applies DPI scaling to all programs, whereas before you had to manually set it.  That page recommends running the program in question in compatibility mode, this didn't work for me with DF.  However, under the Right Click -> Properties -> Compatibility tab, just check "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" and everything is golden.   :D

Other Games / Console Game of the Generation
« on: November 19, 2013, 07:56:16 pm »
PS4 and XBone are coming out, and Giantbomb did exactly what I was thinking about asking B12.... what do you think has been the best gaming experience of the console generation?  I know they'll still be around and more games will appear yada yada, but to date, whaddya think?

Looking at my 360 games in my bookshelf now... I don't know, it's hard to choose.  Skyrim is obviously epic, but PC version blows console out of the water with such a huge broadside I don't really consider it a console game.  Red Dead and COD:MW and Halo and GoW had good multiplayer times.  Say what you will about the COD franchise now, Modern Warfare kicked a lot of ass and was a very influential game.  RDR had an amazing engine, but the story was a bit patchy (total lack of racism and inter-racial violence really jarred me).

So, Ima gonna say, Dragon Age: Origins.  This was the culmination of years of Bioware experience and is the finest mature RPG ever made, IMO.  Though I will never forgive Greg and Ray for selling Bioware to EA, killing off the series before it got started, I'm kind of glad because Origins will stand forever alone as an example of what games can be if produced properly.  Lost Odyssey also amazing, but too much of a FF6 rehash.

What is your game of the generation?  (Except Skyrim, 'cos it's too good).

DF General Discussion / A single game for life... DF?
« on: July 31, 2013, 08:42:20 am »
A question for B12ers, inspired by this article on Gamasutra.  Basically it looks at how some people, looking at gaming from a historical perspective, would play just one game their whole life (e.g. chess or igo), an "evergreen" hobby, and merely dabble in others.  But now people consume many games, and it looks at the reasons why.

DF is mentioned in the article, so do you think DF is your game for life?  Why?

Personally, I don't know.  I mean, DF is right up there, but I love Igo, or maybe a Hironobu Sakaguchi game I could replay forever (starting FF9, again).  Maybe.  I'll admit this idea has never occurred to me before.  Can you imagine playing just one game and trying to master it your whole life??

    General Rules
    • Four teams of three players, a Knight, a Squire and a Steed, will compete in a round-robin, with the two top teams progressing to a grand final.
    • To create a team, submit the require team data, below, first come first served.
    • Each Joust consists of three periods; Pre-Joust, Joust and Post-Joust.
    • In each period, each team member automatically performs one action, and may perform other actions up to their number of Action Points.  e.g. A Squire in the Pre-Joust period will always automatically try to attatch his Knight's armour (and roll to do so).  If the Squire has 1 Pre-Joust AP, he can also try to do something else, which must also be rolled for.
    • Each team member has 4 stats, from 1 to 9, which he must roll equal to or under on a d10 to succeed at Actions.
    • When allocating points, you have 16 to spend.  The minimum is 1 and the maximum is 9 for each skill.
    • Contests between characters are decided after both roll, until one or both of them fail a roll.
    • All characters start with 1 Pre-Joust AP, 1 Joust AP and 1 Post-Joust AP - or AP(1,1,1).
    • The difficulty for each Action is set by the character's skill.  e.g. a Squire with a Brawling of 5 will succeed on any Brawling check if he rolls 5 or under.  1 is always a Miraculous Success, 10 is always a Terrible Failure.
    • All Actions, including automatic Actions, in the Pre-Joust period have a chance to improve (+) or diminish (-) dice rolls in the Joust period.
    • All Actions, including automatic Actions, can be improved by good roleplay.
    • For each period, once everyone submits their Actions, the GM will roll dice and describe the outcome.
    • Tournament stages will be one year apart, so all characters will age one year from tournament to tournament.

    Pre-Joust Period Rules
    • All players submit their Actions for the pre-joust period.  2 day time limit, after which anyone can suggest their Action.
    • Submitted Actions can be specified as taking place before or after Automatic Actions.
    • GM rolls die and describes the outcome of Automatic and Submitted Actions.

    Joust Period Rules
    • All players submit their Actions for the joust period.  1 day time limit, after which anyone can suggest their Action.
    • Submitted Actions will occur first.  Once the Joust begins, players will automatically be given more Actions until the Joust finishes.
    • Joust begins - Steeds always gallop on the first run (injury permitting).  Knights roll Lancery.
    • A successful Lancery roll requires a Shieldery roll from the opponent.
    • A failed Shieldery roll requires an Injury roll (see below) and an Equine Affinity roll.
    • A failed Equine Affinity roll means the Knight falls from the horse.
    • If both Knights remain horsed and capable, repeat from step 1 but Steeds must roll Stamina.
    • A failed Stamina roll means the Knight is a sitting duck so opponent gets a +1 to Lancery
    • If one or both Knights are dehorsed, Squires may run in.  They can do anything they like (but attacking the opponent Knight or Steed is an automatic loss).
    • Whatever happens from then on, players will have to roll the most appropriate skill to perform Actions.
    • The Joust ends when one Knight is incapable of fighting or yields or the Squire yields in his stead (to protect the honour of his Lord).

    Post-Joust Period Rules
    • All players submit their Actions for the post-joust period.  2 day time limit, after which anyone can suggest their Action.
    • Submitted Actions can be specified as taking place before or after Automatic Actions.
    • GM rolls die and describes the outcome of Automatic and Submitted Actions.

All To-Hit and Damage rolls are made from the perspective of the attacker following, of course, a successful attack.  So 1 is best and 10 is worst.

    Stalker – Community RPG Game

Thirteen years ago the Visitation occurred.  At six points along the 43rd parallel on the earth's surface something, or someone, caused the laws of nature to degenerate within discrete circles of land, radiating up into the cold of space.  These six Forbidden Zones, just “Zones” now, have redefined humanity most immediately by forcing political and technological change, but more deeply by insisting on collective philosophical and religious meditation.  Yet what each Zone contains has been only seen, thusfar, to be nothing short of monstrous.  Perversions of reason, order and physical law that mock humanity's curiosity and will to control.

You are a Stalker, an illegal scavenger both hunted by the Institute that would control the Zones, and hunter of Artefacts within the Zones.  What kind of person would risk life and sanity for inexplicable trinkets?  Or maybe the Artefacts are not what you are along for, maybe you seek some other resolution within the Zones.  Though science can find no answers, that does not mean there are none to be found.

The first mission shall take place in the Japan Zone.  The team shall start in the borderland city of Sapporo.  The circle demarcates the absolute perimeter of the Zone, 72km in diameter, but the border region effectively encompasses the whole of Hokkaido, which has become once again a dark uninhabited island, except for the Chitose Airport-Sapporo corridor which maintains a thriving underworld in a place where the light of law shines very weakly.

This is a diceless RPG game.  The team's performace, nay, survival, shall be determined by the quality of its answers, discussion and preparation.  Before character creation, please claim a slot.  Before you claim a slot, please bear in mind:
    • You may die in the game.
    • You may be injured, and it shall be scientifically graphic.
    • The minimum time between updates shall be a week, this shall be a slow game.
    • If you skip a turn or leave either another player may take, or I shall puppet, your character.
    • No knowledge of the lore or book is necessary, anyone is welcome to play.

You can buy the PDF from here or a printed copy from here.  It won't be necessary for the players of the game, but it is recommended.  A great read!

    Yahoo news.  Sorry.

Toady always cites Ray Harryhausen movies as having had an influence on DF, and I'm sure many people here have seen his movies.

I remember two scenes from childhood... the skeleton fight and some multi-armed thing... from Sinbad??  Golden Axe sated my need for skeleton fighting then, but now I want to know, where are the skeletons in DF?
