Other Games / Re: Console Game of the Generation

If you're discounting Skyrim for being better on PC then you definitely can't pick DA:O.

Well, know what you mean, but Skyrim on the PC is soooo much better it's unbelievable.  Almost all games are better on PC, but TES games are just completely different and better games.

My vote goes towards either Demon Souls or The Last of Us, with Dragon's Dogma and Journey getting honourable mentions.
Console game?  Oh boy.  I never finished Demon's Souls, so my vote has to go towards Dragon's Dogma.
Just wish the stupid thing would come out on PC so I could throw more money at that company.

Dragon's Dogma came out of nowhere and was awesome, I'm very excited for the sequel.  Also hope it comes out on PC, but Capcom don't seem to be too motivated on that front.

PS4 and XBone are coming out, and Giantbomb did exactly what I was thinking about asking B12.... what do you think has been the best gaming experience of the console generation?  I know they'll still be around and more games will appear yada yada, but to date, whaddya think?

Looking at my 360 games in my bookshelf now... I don't know, it's hard to choose.  Skyrim is obviously epic, but PC version blows console out of the water with such a huge broadside I don't really consider it a console game.  Red Dead and COD:MW and Halo and GoW had good multiplayer times.  Say what you will about the COD franchise now, Modern Warfare kicked a lot of ass and was a very influential game.  RDR had an amazing engine, but the story was a bit patchy (total lack of racism and inter-racial violence really jarred me).

So, Ima gonna say, Dragon Age: Origins.  This was the culmination of years of Bioware experience and is the finest mature RPG ever made, IMO.  Though I will never forgive Greg and Ray for selling Bioware to EA, killing off the series before it got started, I'm kind of glad because Origins will stand forever alone as an example of what games can be if produced properly.  Lost Odyssey also amazing, but too much of a FF6 rehash.

What is your game of the generation?  (Except Skyrim, 'cos it's too good).

DF General Discussion / Re: DF Versus Indie Titles (Accessibility)
« on: November 11, 2013, 07:57:32 pm »
Hey, Moonlighter, welcome to the forums.

You should probably use the search function for this, there are lots of threads on this topic, and some from within the past few weeks in General DF Discussion.  This FAQ thread is also useful for info.

Some of your presumptions seem wrong... namely, small community?  DF has a huge number of people who know of of the game and play it and, AFAIK, a relatively large number of people who are active in creating content for the game and on the forums every day.  Awareness of the game is, IMO, spectacular for a game that has never been advertised by the developers.  DF has to be one of the most famous indie success stories of all time... right?  There are many interviews with the programmer where he talks about exactly what you bring up.  Check out the FAQ and do some googling to see where the devs stand on this.

edit - This interview jumps to mind.  Hope that helps!

.... It's cool that things like that are happening during play now, though of course the really juicy stuff relating to relatives and so on hasn't been done yet.

"Cool" is an understatement.  Making this kind of meaningful interaction occur in gameplay has always been the big promise of DF's ground-up approach.  It's really exciting to see it beginning to happen.

This is a great little story, but I'm unclear what Toady means when he talks about relatives.  Can anyone tell me what he has in mind here?

Yeah... I was half thinking that... Thanks for bringing it up, LB   :)  It's difficult really, the way I see it, the major advantage of a forum game is precisely that we can continue it sporadically - which I would be fine with.  But then again, the major drawback has been I feel that without finishing in a timely manner it does become a bit of a drag - for myself and players too I suspect.  Which is a shame.  I want to play, but the problem is if I don't keep up, for whatever reason, I feel guilty for letting everyone down.   :(

I agree with your assessment LB, so...

I'll call it a wrap here.

I totally made a mistake not starting with the action.  Sorry about that, guys.  I learnt a lot, and would love to try to improve but the medium is tricky.  Live action is probably the best way to go.  Thanks for participating, everyone!

TURN 03 - Marcus

Marcus picks up the medic's kit, and looks it over it the hope that he'll figure out what's inside it.

Marcus picks up the box, it's plastic, the size of a briefcase with a molded handle.  He finds a nice picture on the back that displays the contents.  He reckons that with this kit he would be able to deal with almost any standard non-lethal injuries, and even stabilize more serious things like gunshots.  Though hospital treatment would still be desired in such cases.  Notably though, from a surgeon's perspective, it is glaringly lacking a scalpel and needle and thread and anaesthetic (he recalls he has antiseptics in his bag).  Taking a quick walk through the store though, Marcus finds analogues for those items in razor blades and sewing kits and alcohol wash (probably drinkable).  Not the best for him, and certainly not for the patient, but beggers can't be choosers, and incapacitated patients can't even beg so they certainly can't choose.

TURN 03 - Corban

Smiles to himself as he heads back to the hotel. The shopkeeper caught on quick, but not quick enough.

"Maybe next time, lady" he whispers to himself, slipping the cream into the bag with his weapons.

Walk quickly back to the hotel, trying to keep stock of his surroundings can't be too careful, after all.

Corban is alert, but nonchalant as he walks along the cold, tired streets.  Passing Sapporo station he sees a policeofficer, a young man, standing outside his policebox keeping an eye on travellers coming to and from the terminal.  He pays an extra moments attention to the Scot with his black shoulder slung bag, but as Corban walks past the station the officer attends to other people.

Quote
Upon reaching the hotel, returns to his room via the stairs, takes a quick shower. Props a chair up against his room door, sets an alarm for 5.30 and sleeps with the pistol under his pillow, taking extra care to make sure the safety is on.

Corban allows himself to relax a little in the shower, and contemplates that the end of this day really felt like any other day, and he could easily be in a shower anywhere else in the world.  But instead it is a prelude to tomorrow, when he will enter the Japan Zone.  He hopes he has made the necessary preparations.  Taking precautions against intruders, Corban feels safe..ish.  He has been meticulous in considering eventualities, and this brings him a rational kind of emotional security, similar to a faith.  He sleeps well.

edit - 2/5 home!  I've gotta force myself to keep this going.  Can't abandon this until everyone has met a grisly end.

TURN 03 - Kasumi

Kasumi thinks about it for a few seconds, shrugs, and let's the old man keep his cane. It's not as good as a proper crowbar anyway.

When I read bout the blind man with the sturdry metal cane, this was the first thing that came to mind.

In another reality, Kasumi tried to take the cane and was beaten to a pulp and, demoralised, spent the rest of her days waiting tables in Denny's where she had an uneventful yet content life.

TURN 03 - Alexei

The correct reaction, I believe, is to ignore her and keep walking. However, having already established myself as a crazy foreigner I think I can get away with this: pretend to misunderstand. Pretend to be completely oblivious as to what she really means, just say "oh, of course." Hand her a thousand yen note and keep walking. Resume my conversation with Kimiko as if nothing happened.

The man-woman snatches the money indignantly and curses Alexei sharply whilst quickly nestling the note away in his clothes.  She walks back down the street.

"You want to buy something,"

"Yes, we'll be fast. I know what I want, no need to browse."

Buy:
 * 2 black karate belts $20 for the pair
 * 4 bokken (curved, with hilt, katana-length)  $50 each
 * 2 brass knuckles  $40 for the pair
 * 6 sageo cords  $30 each ty for link

Use two sageo to create a pair of mounting loops on each side of my backpack. Sheathe the bokken through the loops, two on each side with hilts extending above my shoulders so I can draw with both hands simultaneously. Thread a karate belt through the holsters I bought for my pistol and combat knife, and put it on over the top of my trenchcoat. Pistol on right hip, knife on left. Then toss the extra belt, and four sageo in my bag, and the brass knuckles in a coat pocket. Thank the proprietor then let him get back to sleep.

Total shopping cost is $440

Mr. Batou and Yumiko look on as Alexei skillfully ropes and belts up and when finished, stands tall and weaponized and extremely dangerous looking.  As dangerous as any human could possibly look, without an automatic weapon.  The owner raises one eyebrow when Alexei waves his thanks, and calls out,

"Oooi!  Take this stuff," he tosses a small can at Alexei with a thick arm.  "It'll bring ya good luck out there.  Don't use it on yer hair though, pretty boy.  Come drop by again if ya make it back alive."  Alexei looks at the can, it says, "HOKKAIDO PURE NON-SYNTHETIC OIL".  As Alexei and Yumiko leave, they can see him lighting up a cigarette and rocking on his chair, seemingly lost in thought.

Feel free to leave any criticisms/mini-suggestions/commentary.

I like your avatar very much!

Nice idea... got me thinking that perhaps one might generalize the whole system to be rather than a key-press macro system, a construction macro system.  Then it would naturally extend to traps, minecarts, defenses etc. in addition to buildings.  Perhaps for such a system to work, you might have to designate a 3D volume within which to record, then just start and stop it.  When played back, the game would just designate jobs to create the required pieces in sequence.

There are all kinds of other issues though, like material availability, job designations and so on, that would make it non-trivial to program.  I guess...   :-\

Maybe your idea of some preset "parts" and templates would be simpler and better.  A 3D volume template-grab would be nice, though would need extra logic programming for the game to work out how to reproduce it.

DF Suggestions / Re: Better Patrols
« on: November 04, 2013, 05:39:31 am »
Would be nice, since dwarves clumping together certainly happens for parties and teaching and stuff.  I guess this would fall under the umbrella of military formations which was on the cards to be added a while back, but got postponed IIRC.  Hopefully patrols would receive some love when armies and other related stuff gets handled.

Nice interview, thanks for the link!  Christmas release would be.... Well I don't want to jinx this.

Love this idea.  Though perhaps with refugees and a generally more complicated political situation emerging in the game it might be necessary to keep the init number since the mountain home may not be the only source of immigrants?

DF Modding / Re: Best Adventure Mode Mods?

Yeah, why bother with mods when you can hack the bejeebuz out of DF?  Please disregard Wanderer's Friend, OP, I must have been out of my mind to suggest something inferior to a we-can-hax-this-so-it-must-be-a-good-idea plugin.  I don't know why you posted in the modding forum at all when then utilities forum is really where it's at.  Though perhaps it is easy to confuse this as there are some people who still post utilities and tilesets in this section.   ::)
