Yeah I followed the links to the TTS service provided, so I can see that being a possibility - but the case still stands that they are not all too smart, because with a high demand and a potentially low adoption rate of the premium content they are backing a loser that could drive the game into the ground, as it has done now (i.e. they have a loss-leading business model that isn't generating revenue).  I love the concept of the game, and it can and does work in practice, but I'm really disappointed with the way these devs have handled it in terms of monetisation, the TTS restrictions and the obviously flawed game mechanics.

Ugh!  The text-to-speech voices have been DISABLED, ruining everything that made it entertaining.  The note on the title screen says they were disabled for non-premium users due to high server demand... which means either...

a)  The devs were stupid and had all the audio files generated on a server and sent to every player???  There's no logical reason I can see for "servers" to be in any way involved in the TTS generation.  Which leads me to suspect...
b)  The devs are getting greedy and are locking the fun behind a paywall instead of having the balls to just charge for the game.

I'm pretty pissed at this, since I came to the game for some inebriated entertainment and it broke.  Whatever's going on is down to some unintelligent planning/design.  Or a frantic monetisation scramble while they are enjoying a boom in popularity.  So yeah, this coupled with some other strangeness surrounding the game doesn't fill me with confidence and pushes all the wrong buttons in my book.  Stay away until they get their act together.  Ugh!   >:(

DF General Discussion / Re: Giant anteaters kill 2 hunters.

I feel sorry for the "hunters" killed by the giant anteaters, but from what I understand these animals are little more than hyper-twitchy dogs with nail extensions.  One on one I fancy my chances, and I think any dwarf would do too.

I probably agree with you there, Wardo.  I can see it becoming a bit stake maybe once the initial novelty wears off, and game quality can be really up and down.  But I really hope this spawns a new genre of online drama games.  Also the OS requirement for the website is really odd!

Great!  That was a LOT of bugs squashed, I hope save compatibility will hold because I'm really hoping to settle down into a long term fort.  Thanks, Toady.

That was a really good article, I wish there were more of these explaining for new players how to do basic stuff and how to approach the game.

It's a free-to-play multiplayer freeform mystery chat game that broke my Dota addiction.  It is just spectacularly good fun.  You roleplay a character, and go nuts, and it has text to speech dialogue.  Just try it, it's on Steam too.  (Even better with alcohol).

My rooms and corridors are all mouse drawn and as un-rectangular as possible.  It must be hell for pathfinding, but I can't bear to make orthogonal designed fortresses.  I think for mega-projects I might allow more deliberate, right-angled plans, but at least at the beginning of fortress life my dwarves are creating burrows in the ground which are excavated on the whims of necessity and so look as such.

Great list of bugs squashed there, well done Toady and thanks to the people who found them and helped out with how to fix them!

The tournament structure could not have been more obtuse.  That was terrible.
The final was pretty disappointing, VGs draft seemed really bad??  I don't know if pot-sharing or collusion type stuff has a history in Dota, but hey the turnaround after the first game was so extreme it ... didn't seem real.  But I dunno, first time I watched one of these.  Hope the next one is clearer and more satisfying.

Don't vampires have the alternate personality thing from dwarf mode?
