DF General Discussion / Re: Multi-level view demo
« on: October 19, 2009, 05:21:06 pm »
This is gorgeous. Simply gorgeous. And when compared to other methods to better simulate a 3D world...this has got to be the easiest to implement. I do hope Toady takes this into very serious consideration

Agreed, this is a great way to make the UI *much* more intuitive + cool without reworking everything into iso/3D.  And it keeps the asci which I wouldn't want to lose.

The production made it chilled and eerie... and what Toady was talking about was great as usual.  Threetoe's fortresses sound hilarious.   :D

That adventure game was really fun! Even though it was short, that last puzzle was kind of neat. If the game were longer and the hints more drawn out it would have been harder, but a fun way to put up a spoiler nonetheless . How can you not read a spoiler when it comes in adventure-game form?

Arrrggh!  Which would be more awesome:  Uncovering the spoiler in game, or reading the adventure-game reveal?
I haven't uncovered HFS in game yet either.   :(

Burrows is something I never even expected to see, so like everyone else, sounds awesome.  I like the idea of creating coloured workshops using custom stockpiles in that burrow.  Also, some kind of Vault Burrow (Fallout style) for apocalyptic retreat would be great.  Or the opposite, like the armageddon call in Populous, all Dwarves rush to the surface to meet the siege head on   ;D

Awesome update! I really like the new squad changes.

Are we going to see enemies using formations as well? And will that be set by civ? So, goblins might be a bit unorganized but Humans are very strict and kobolds have no discipline whatsoever?

Yes, yes.. a brilliant post toaday [sic]/[groan]!
I just went back through the dev logs since sept last year... the next release is going to be truly amazing and, IMO, worth the wait.

I'm interested as to what formations will be possible, how they will utilise different soldier types and how they will affect combat performance.

DF Community Games & Stories / Community challenges...?
« on: May 31, 2009, 11:54:48 am »
I'm quite new here, and don't follow this section of the forum much, but has anyone ever organized a system of weekly community challenges?  Something along the lines of "Here's a seed, start at this site, defeat a megabeast in one week without cutting down trees."

People can then post their victories or failures in the thread and the truly great DFers can be weeded out   ;D
The weak who disappoint Armok (like myself) can then get a glimpse of good tactics and strategies .
I just thought that this might provide a good motivation to keep people playing and provide regular goal orientated play... it seems I spend more time reading about the game than playing it at the moment!

DF General Discussion / Re: What turns you off about DF?
« on: May 06, 2009, 07:52:18 am »
Basically, it's a question of whether and why the player should have to rely on an external, third-party database for critical information on how to play the game, instead of the game (and maker) providing the information first hand.

I think the latter, the game providing information, is a must.  The game is unplayable without the wiki telling you what items you need to construct others, what ores are required for what metals and so on, not to mention the specific positioning of objects like pumps.

And as everyone else said, the interface... standardise scrolling, selection, context sensitive menus etc...
I'd play the game much more if I didn't have to stare at my laptop keyboard trying to find the right key combinations to set a zone up   :P

Great interview!  Really good to hear a bit about Toady's life and the background to DF   :)

a)  just to add to the list of things that make people "undead", in a more historical and anthropological setting, Jimson weed has been attributed to making people behave like "zombies" - both in the event from which it gets its name, and in some occult practices from Haiti IIRC (doping criminals up and burying them alive??)

b)  I love the idea of a hospital and dwarves staggering back after battle.  How about faithful wardogs dragging back their crippled masters?

DF General Discussion / Re: Future of the Fortress: List of Remaining Items

Just posting to salute your continued dedication and progress!

I'll second that!  It's great Toady shows such dedication to this game... I know it can be tough sticking with the same thing for so long, so I hope the forum support is good for motivation  :D

Sorry this may be a stupid question, but how are the pixel values scaled to DF?
For example, all pixel values must be 0-255, but in DF the world-gen temperature values run from -1000 to +1000... does this mean a pixel of 128 = 0 degrees in DF?  How does this work for each of the map types?

Anyway. This is really great stuff! I'm working setting up a large world based on a height map of Middle Earth. Will post it here as soon at its done  8)

This was my first thought... how is it coming along?!?
I'm tempted to give it a try myself...  anybody else tried this?

DF General Discussion / Re: Stupid question about "Urist"
« on: January 12, 2009, 09:17:13 am »
I too was confused by all this Urist-talk.  Took me a while to find that story too.  Made me want to try a solo-fort.  Sorry, this may be a silly question... is there a collection of Fortress stories like Urist and Boatmurdered?

I've never tried changing the PP before, but did a quick test now...
All tests were windowed 1600x1024, no graphic sets, FPS with the wagon at start of new fort

40d
PP:NO ~80 fps
PP:YES:2 ~ 180 fps

40d5
PP:NO ~280 fps
PP:YES:2 ~280 fps

There were two discernable differences; 40d5 seemed to be blockier scaling the chars up (rather, an irregular blockiness whereas 40d looked more solid), and with PP on there was more flickering, I didn't turn on VSync but I assume this might be more of a necessity with the higher fps.
Otherwise no probs with 40d5 at all.

edit: sorry, not vsync... it uses single buffer?  double buffer option??
