DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Would like advice

Beware that the one live goblin is probably a necromancer, so any corpses he gets near will join his undead army.

Train macedwarves with silver maces and make spiked metal ball traps for your corridor. Stone traps have a chance of doing some damage but not a significant one.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Elven caravans no longer sell logs?
« on: December 17, 2014, 05:16:58 am »
They definitely will bring logs if your fortress is really low on them, but the threshold on that is clearly much lower now. Depending on caravans for all of your wood is a dicier situation, but if you want to maximize what they bring, use up all your wood in the spring.

Charging out would be a great way to end your fortress's military in a blaze of glory. Zombies are not to be trifled with.

I'm not really sure what you're trying to say here. Is this meant to be a criticism of DF, or just of the way Deboche runs his fort?

Because regarding DF it's much simpler to just exclude married women or women with infants from military service, rather than all of them.

And regarding Deboche, this is hardly the worst thing that people have talked about doing in their fortresses, and I question whether making a thread about it is really appropriate.

Maybe you could burrow a mayor you like into a meeting hall with some of his constituents, close in to force them to socialize and force him to increase his skills?

Remember kids, dig in from a diagonal to keep water pressure from being a problem!

If you hit tab several times you'll get a bigger display for the text.

You may also want to try zooming with the mouse wheel.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Stop dwarves from attacking
« on: December 14, 2014, 07:26:47 am »
Retreats are for elven forests, not for Dwarven warriors.

In all seriousness, pretty much the only way is to cancel all orders to the squad, letting them revert to civilians. This still isn't certain, as civilians will sometimes rush into an ongoing conflict.

Honestly your best bet with any melee dwarf is to station them behind a blind corner, with a door that you can lock if you need to, but once they get sight of the enemy, you should count on your dwarves being committed to the fight until they or their enemies are dead.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Still Hopeless From a Major Injury

Now the dwarf who got lungshot by his own rib is constantly cancelling his jobs to be shaken by his injury. Then again, this may be a result of having my chief medical dwarf surgery his lung without having any skill in surgery.

Hey, I didn't realize that I had another surgeon in the fortress!

Edit: the job cancelations have stopped, and my paraplegic dwarf was kind enough to throw another tantrum and punch another dwarf's rib through their lung, so I'll get to repeat the experiment. On a related note I'm now digging out a jail for my fortress.

The dwarf with the bad arm seems to constantly be meeting with my mayor to cry on shoulder or yell at, so that might be helping.

Zombies seem to show up for early game sieges a lot more frequently, so if you want early game action maybe embark within range of a tower?

I've got a second one now who lost the use of one of his arms, and is constantly annoyed. He's stressed now, while my hopeless, haggard paraplegic recently threw a tantrum and punched another dwarf's chest, shattering his false rib and tearing it through his lung. Then after the tantrum was over he carried the dwarf he injured to the hospital, very slowly of course because he can't walk, and felt sympathy for the poor dwarf.

Do you guys think this is working as intended? As it is, it seems like it will become virtually impossible to keep these dwarves from going crazy.

DF Gameplay Questions / Still Hopeless From a Major Injury
« on: December 11, 2014, 02:21:55 pm »
One of my dwarves managed to get nerve damage on his right leg and left foot from a fight with a zombie a while back, rendering him unable to stand. Ever since then, the thought 'he feels hopeless after suffering a major injury' always seems to be at the top of his thoughts, while positive thoughts always recede into last season. He has since become stressed, and then haggared, and has had a bout of obliviousness and one of depression.

Is this just how it is for majorly injured dwarves? Has anyone else experienced this, and does anyone have a solution?

I've experienced this too, where a handfull of zombies keep siegeing me from the left side of the map and then walking off the top side. Are they just generating with insufficient numbers for a siege?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Disease Resistance: what does it affect?
« on: January 29, 2014, 08:23:59 pm »
I thought disaese resistance meant dwarf's ability to resist infections. Dwarves with high disease resistance would get infection much more rarilily than ones with low.

I'd assumed that too, but I haven't been able to corroborate that with evidence one way or the other. Considering that nearly everything else in this game has been tested with Dwarven Science, I was kinda surprised to find a lack of conclusive information.

I might consider putting together my own study on the issue, the only question is: how to get enough small injuries on enough dwarves to test it without killing them outright...

Hmmm...
