DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: March 27, 2018, 04:55:13 pm »
I'm pretty sure the dwarf who became my first mayor was operating under an assumed name. He was known to the fortress as Itlud Curllocks, and had no non-combat skills.

I really like making intricate tombs for my most important dwarves, and so I've got a hall set up to hold the remains of the mayors of my fortress. Whenever a new mayor is elected, they get a tomb and a statue in it.

For a while, I was confused why I couldn't make statues of this mayor, as all the statues I made of him were of some dwarf named Zon Granitetalk. Specifically of Zon Granitetalk being elected mayor of my fortress. At first I was confused, and thought that I'd had another mayor that I hadn't noticed, but I didn't see any record of a Zon Granitetalk anywhere in my fortress, living or dead.

Finally, I thought that perhaps Itlud Curllocks was Zon Granitetalk, so I just put the statues in his tomb.

A few years later, Itlud had joined the military, and was sent in to deal with a forgotten beast who had gotten into the fortress because I hadn't yet properly secured the cavern entrance. My elite marksdwarf had been dodging and shooting the beast repeatedly when Itlud came charging in with his hammer, and pretty much immediately got brutally murdered by it. Eventually the rest of my military showed up and killed the beast.

So now his tomb reads that it is the final resting place of Itlud, but when I examine it it contains the head and partial skeleton of Zon Granitetalk.

For some time now, Dwarven honor has been implemented. This means that when a dwarf spots an ongoing fight, they have a strong urge to join in. In my experience, the only way to prevent dwarves from taking the fight to the enemy with their fists is to prevent them from getting line of sight on them.

With my marks dwarves, I've taken to locking them into their burrow.

Endless Siege bug has by happenstance spared me a visit from the elven diplomat, who was about to push me into adopting a tree limit. I guess I get another year of free harvesting.

Also, the law-giver of the local human civilization (Which seems to consist of one city and some hamlets) is apparently a female Gorlak. At some point I'm going to need to get into legends viewer and find out how that happened.

In case you didn't know, any dirt or mud underground will now start to sprout cave moss and floor fungus, and occasional young underground "trees". I don't think these can grow to full size on one Z level, but on 2+ they probably can. You can graze your livestock underground now.

All my sieges so far have had a few units get stuck. It's annoying, but they always go away eventually, and I've taken to using the force caravan command in Dfhack to bypass them.

I tend to build an initial tiny fortress, and then as I dig deeper I convert that fortress into my fortress' Tavern, which is open to the public, and has inn rooms available. I use said rooms to recruit tons of mercenaries to fill out my squadrons.

I pretty much only use them for stone, though I suppose I might start using them for body parts as well: after the last two sieges, I think a mass goblin grave is in order.

I avoid using them for anything that can be binned.

Finally did it. I updated the census... I Never want to do that again, I swear the word "alive" is now ingrained in my head after highlighting it 100+ time and changing it to green.

You can lower your weapons now gents.

You think that was annoying, I assembled that list manually.

Also, you should probably mark which of the original group are now dead, which is most of them.

54
Keep in mind, I made sure to make your room the one at the far end of the remodeled area. It was the only one that wasn't expanded.

... jackass.

will rewrite the title

Speaking of rewrites, were you ever going to update the census?

In Ryukan's Room

Ryukan sat on the stone cold floor of his chambers meditating when suddenly a violent shock of energy crashed into the world, and more importantly, in Gloomdiamonds.

Ryukan smirked.

"Now the Fun begins."

Keep in mind, I made sure to make your room the one at the far end of the remodeled area. It was the only one that wasn't expanded.

56
Excellent.

Sometimes the text gave me issues, but scrolling in and out always fixed them.

I imagine that you could just post a thread on DF Gameplay Questions. Something like 'can anyone help me get this save running in Ubuntu?'

58
Here's a zip file of my full DF folder in case that helps. It's on my googledrive because it wouldn't fit on DFFD.

Okay. I will pop in the save sometime today. Are we no longer on lnp? I'm not sure if I can get another version to run... Oh well I'll inform you of my progress in like 10 to 12 hours

If you need me to, I can pass you my whole DF folder for it.

I never imagined the ferocity of my fellow dwarves. I think they’ve started taking bets about which of them can take down a hyena with the least assistance or preparation. It hasn’t been working out so well for the ones who don’t carry weapons. Though somehow none of them have died or been seriously injured yet.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Today I was relaxing in The Symmetric Sugars, taking in a story from a visiting goblin poet with Ast, our broker. After she finished her rousing tale of a legendary giant lion named Cinderowner, which had raided several nearby lands before the human Shadu Mushroombraid hunted it down and confronted it, I went to get me and Ast another goblet of barley wine.

“Here’s to you, Ast,” I said as we clinked cups. “A broker and chief medical dwarf, truly you’re a dwarf of many talents.”

“You’re too generous,” she laughed, and then chucked back half of her drink. Shaking her head, her voice slurring a little, she said “No, really, too generous.”

I sensed that she was being oddly serious. “What do you mean?” I asked.

Ast shifted back a few steps and leaned against the smoothed chert cave wall. She shook her head again. “Oh, I’m fine enough as a tradesdwarf, but I don’t know the first thing about medicine. I mostly stay out of the way of the real medical dwarves.”

I blinked at her. The revelation was sobering. I drank most of my barley wine, but it didn’t help. “Wait, you… you’re serious, aren’t you? Our… our chief medical dwarf can’t tell a break from a sprain?”

Ast shrugged.

“How did this happen?”

“Don’t know. I think it was just a matter of convenience when the overseer, I think it was Gwolfski, needed a hospital set up. Have to have a chief medical dwarf to have a hospital, you know.”

I sighed deeply. “You realize I’m going to have to assign an actual medical dwarf now, before someone else gets hurt.”

Ast finished off her wine. “Probably for the best,” she said.

Today Gwolfski informed me that he was in fact the chief medical dwarf, and that I must have been looking at the records while overly drunk, and suffered from double vision, and Ast was too drunk to think critically. Gwolfski apparently does know at least the bare minimum about medicine, mostly from direct experience.

(OOC: I literally read the nobles screen, thought I saw Ast in both positions, saw she didn't have even a signle level of any medical skill, wrote this whole story about it, and then found out I'd been wrong about the whole thing, so this is my way of reconciling that because I didn't want to throw away what I wrote.)

The water flows into the reservoir for the residential well, finally. Soon we will have a more centralized water source.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

There have been some… complications. I’ve sealed off the hatch leading into this large basin, and I’m going to remove that door to release the water that built up here. The good news is that this should make an excellent tertiary water source.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
This leads to a predictable result. Luckily there’s plenty of open space past the veins for the water to evaporate in.

Well, I’m not going to tell a crippled dwarf who killed a goblin with his shield that he can’t name the thing.

Frankly, I look forward to my resignation as overseer, The job involved a lot more work than I’d realized it would, and it’s taken a lot of out of me. But everything it’s taken out of me I’ve given freely to Gloomdiamonds, to make it great for the first time!

All in all, I personally have to rate my time as overseer as an outstanding success. Not only were two murderous bloodsucking monsters vanquished on my watch, but each of my projects was completed in turn, from the Big Beautiful Wall…

Which now stands proud over the land protecting us, to

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

the successful completion of my Living Large project, which provided appropriate living space for over two hundred dwarves living in the fortress, to the expansion and proper protection of our military,

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And even to the remodeled storage cavern, where stockpiles are set up to accept all kinds of items, we are succeeding bigly in every way.

Having done such a good job, I’ve made sure to take care of myself after my retirement, by setting myself up with a humble little abode: Dare I say the humblest abode: Pyrite tower.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And with that I pass the torch to the next overseer, with a few important notes:

1: I left notes in the N menu on all the levers I built or was able to figure out what did.

2: A lot of the fortress is still very cluttered with rock and ore. A lot of the rock is gypsum, which I think is only useful for powder. So you might want to start selling gypsum powder.

3: I left the army off training for most of the year as I needed the extra hands for hauling and construction, so they might do for some extra training.

4: I completely ignored the caverns, and they are completely unsecured against flyers, so you may want to do something about that. Or not. Could be FUN.

Otherwise I have to wish the best of luck to you, overseer. Please do your best to keep us all alive.
