DF Suggestions / Re: Is it water or what?
« on: March 07, 2011, 03:16:45 pm »
Variable tile height (like you mentioned) would be difficult because then dwarves are all on separate heights on the same z-level. It would be sort of like having eight times as many z-levels as we do now.
No! Keep dwarves on same height on one z-level. No changing in dwarves z-position. But height on ground could control accessibility of any creature to pass that tile. I.e. 0/7-2/7 - works like flat ground(small pile), 3/7-5/7 - regular slope, 6/7-7/7 - wall. With this innovation we could construct from dirt, fill channels with dirt, have more realistic digging process.
I first glimpse it looks like turn all ground into water. But, if count as 7/7 ground only open tiles, instead closed(underground), it won't be big penalty to perfomance.

I agree it's a strange way of doing it. But, well, that's how it works.
Yes, water works great in DF! I think it's better water in whole game world.

It's probably because a 3/7 stream really isn't supported as well as a 7/7  stream.
A 7/7 stream won't make your computer cry
Sure, I can't talk about game technical reasons, but, 7 means 7 + 0(without water) = 8 bits = 1 byte per tile. So, I dont understand why game  haven't different digging status per tile, while it have water(depth) status. Example: digging channels and mines could be implemented like taking water from pit. I.e. dwarf dug 1of7 dirt from tile and put it in dump zone. There we have now small pile of dirt with 1/7 status. So we could not only dig, but fill piles and hills in new place. 4/7 could be slope.
Same status for heavy gases spreading on ground with different levels. I.e. 1/7 poisonous gas don't kill drarf, but mices or cats. I hope your understand what i mean... ))

If you need the river for defensive purposes, just channel it all out.  TBH, dry moats and regular walls are much better than water moats, notwithstanding syndrome poisoning.
OTOH, shouldn't major rivers be more than 1 z-level deep?  There are a few RL rivers that are hundreds of feet deep in places.
Yes, it is. I can dig channels, but better to have additional water defences like just river at start. Most historical towns were build on river forks to rise natural defence.
I think huge rivers should be deepest.

I do like your idea about making streams not have the water below. We could still have fish in it though and be able to get water from it. If you dug a channel from it, water could flow from it as well, but quite slowly.
Yes, sure. For small stream. Fish could be in ths stream and seen on same level with stream. Maybe, not carps, but small one. Dams will stop flow like in current water model and make it rise. I don't see any contradictions to do that.

It is a strange way of doing it, but it's the best way possible right now without changing fundamental aspects of how water works. If you got rid of the water below the "floor" on top, then you wouldn't be able to get any water out of it at all.
I dont see any needed changing in water behavior. Dig channel near to stream and see how water flows down in it.

That's what happens if you embark near a small stream. It's filled with stones so you have to dig those out before you can do anything with it. Other rivers are larger.

But depth is 7 in below tile. Maybe make some improvement to remove below tile under smal streams? It will be right and nice, IMHO. Now it's looks like underground river with stone shell.

DF Suggestions / Is it water or what?
« on: March 06, 2011, 01:53:48 pm »
Hello.

Sorry, if i'm return to common topic again, but I've try to use this useless search engine. ((

I don't understand this water model in game. It's looks like ice instead water. Dwarf can cross 7of7 depth river at full speed with stone block in hands without any penalties like Jesus, although, he could drown in same river and not having any chances to reach ground. River is two tiles depth object. Upper part is fake water surface - ice, but bottom is true - normal water flow. I think it's very important to have fully functional water-river for gameplay and defence purpose.

It's nice to build bridges for regular purpose.

Sorry for my english,
Thanks.

DF Suggestions / Re: DF as an Iphone App

As keyboard problem solution i offer use transparent keyboard layout as base. DF is shortcuts based game so most of screen area is uses for display game state only. Placing transparent keyboard over game screen is solution.
Look on my video to see what i mean. I play termDF on my iTouch with iSSH app. Sorry for horror breathing, i'm too close to mic))

This is the closest you will ever get to running dwarf fortress on a portable device.

This is cool stuff. There are lot of telnets and ssh for iPhone. But i see solution in it only with 3G and free portable internet. )))

I have ssh-telnet app on iPhone with X11 remote desktop support. It use cool system for keyboard shortcuts emulation.

turn based DF mode only will be enough. )

if you think it's impossible to make DF on iPhone then would be great to see parts of game. I.e. huge armies battle sim based on bestiary world of DF. ))

I think DF mode too. Maybe world, area size and population limit will be solution! Anyway it will be good engine test app.

Yes. iPhone isn't quad core. What about world colony size limitation?

I repeat what I said before.. iPhone 3Gs is most powerful PDA(iTouch) or Smartphone(iPhone) on this planet. It compared to IMac. Device with 150 000 apps for it. Many famous game conversions like NFS, Settlers, Nethack and etc. What can be strongest argument for porting DF to such device? Army of anything-instead-of-Apple users? ))

Necro... "Search" is rules!  :D

As iPhone family device user and fan of DF game I think this's actual topic for now. Not for 1,5 year ago, but now! I like to play NetHack and Settlers on iPhone. So i want DF.
i.e. Settlers

Someone said that iPhone is crap... maybe, but who asks them to use it.

It's a great idea to port DF to iPhone and upcoming iPad. Like NetHack and Settlers, DF would be great port and make many people happy. ))
First big reason to do this is iPhone 3Gs is most the most powerful PDA in the world!!!
Second big reason is money. Selling DF in AppStore will be good support for author. I will buy DF in AppStore for any money.
and last reason is easy update. ))

Thanks.

DF Bug Reports / how to stop flood (spoiler)
« on: May 18, 2009, 02:38:54 pm »
Hello.

I discovered nice bug when try to solve problem with early flooded zone. After long time drainage my room i saw my room is totaly dry. The cause of that was tower-cap grown in tunnel and blocked water flow. ))

It is exactly bug! ))

Yes. But i see it like portion of realism and lot of building materials. Many fortifications was made of soil and such as sand! )

Once upon a time i play in DF first time and was disappointed by hours of dumping stones in river to block it. )))

hahaha! Ultima 7?  ;D

Much better to use simple 3d-engine than old tile isometric. It will be simple to make and use.

Forget to say... Good pics!  ;)
