I completely see where you are comming from. I actually bought that Magika btw and while its not go great depth I think the reason the company is in shock and it has surpased expectations by thousands of sales is that people respect the fact theres a company out there who trys to develop something original rather than looking at core grps of players based on numbers and churning out crysis 10.9 and Call of Duty (The dark ages) and then every, in fact I will stop there as dont want to be insulting hehe :)

Btw whats Colan's claim? I googled it but didnt get any results, if it is a game I would be grateful if you could point me to some site.

I will try and think of more suggestions but tbh you sound like you have (like myself) player a ton of games and pretty much at minimum tried all the chavdom mainstream games(like myself) , got sick of them and looked for ages for unique stuff

Im going to try those shadowrun suggestions now btw, thanks for the insight all.

If you are going to play a Shadowrun ROM make it the Sega Genesis one, as it is closer to the RPG and imho a better game experience.

Useful advice to the OP but also to myself , thanks as well :) I will need to try that !

This thread has caught my eye owing to the fact that I feel more or less, exactly has the OP does, I also noted lots of good advice and the person who mentions tiredness having an effect on game enjoyment may be onto something, nice theory for sure, I havent really thought about it but after Uni the last few days I am sitting here about sleeping, heres the thing I was enjoying X terran conflict a few days back and now I can be bothered so maybe its the tiredness

To the OP terran conflict is a time sink now yes it does a good job as a trade sim but the fact is x terran conflict has so much more than all other x series games which were quite boring unless u found away to exploit the boring simulator, that may well put you of but the fact is , in terran you can go capturing small mesium ships(i.e stealing) or boaording the top level huge ships after training your marines via sucesful boards of easier ships.

Theres numerous campaigns in it and unlike the older x games where you put your life on the line , spent 3 weeks on some crappy plot sub mission well terran is not like that sure the story isnt epic but you do get good rewards this time so you can be viable very fast and hence enjoying the game without just doing buy low sell high rubbish and calling what is in essencee ecconomics a game for most.

Do you like the old snes games? get a snes or an emulator and put on shadowrun, offcourse you must own the game and not go searching google for shadowrun roms that could be illeagal

another old school set of games I bought of steam was the xcom series
I also bought groteque tactics and for all the good reviews it got at the time i didnt think much of it at all

Then theres "The last remnant" , many of the younger users on the steam forums rage quit at one of the bosses but i really liked  that game, some of the bosses required good tactics, the graphiicss were good and there was lots of content but it wwas not bland looking content, the story wasnt bad once it got started (It does start kinda slow)

The combat system took critisism but I also liked it

When I think of more I will post, anyway great thread all, I hope I helped with some of my old and not so old school suggestions :)

Ow and last but not least, GET WARBAND (as in mount & blade warband) if you havent got it, suffice to say I NEVER buy sequels, ever because I like unique original things but if you played the first mount and blade, remember how having your own empire wasnt feasible? Well it is now and you get lords and become a king, you control and appoint minister of state marshalls and vassals who act independently in your defence but who will do your every whim if you send the command, hell warband has so much added , tbh anyone new to the game I would say just dont buy mount & blade 1 and get warband its just brilliant and has loads more than m&b 1 , additionally theres a great multiplayer mod called crpg which maes mp more like single player, you start as a peasant though and login to a web server m&b map, move about goto shops buy gear and level up through killing in MP (actually the shop thing is strategus , play both these)

also theres a new m&b mod which claims that it makes the game play like single player except you and a friend are on differqant pcs and you can help each other in fights etc via mp having the benefit of a mp game as well. (I havent verified it works but am eager to try it when my friend grets his neew PC

P.S you folks are the best, I just bought Magika :D didnt know of that one!

These are old games so this is probably the only place (This forum) where I have any hope of just getting some tips, general feedback on either of the games mentioned in the subject, e.g p3 or PR2

I purchased both, now I want a game with good piracy and patrician 3 seems like better ship combat, tbh it reminds me of a taipan like game on the amstrad cpc 464 and well I have been looking for a game with ship combat like that for sooo long so it brings back good memmorys, that being said I have done the P3 tutorial and Im on the first campaign which is about advancement in lumeck, it just takes so long to notic progression, I have been trading and I never seem to complete the campaign , current stage Ive been given the tip to stock up on booze and some other luxurys in my warhouse for winter, its december now and I sold the stuff but still no completion, I want to play a full game of p3 but I dont see the point if I am not good enough for the campaigns, I just wish I could trade well as the game seems to promise alot from what Ive read.

I also got very far through the port royale 2 tutorial stuff but I got to a point where I had to setup a produiction chain but the scenario gives you not enough cash, next what happens is because you built the chain partuially without quite enough cash you lose money over time and if you arent doing your trading perfect each run yiou will be bankrupt within 20 mins if that <-----see in a real game I wouldnt setup a chain until I had 2 to 3 times more than the scenario

So with all that , which of the two would you say was best and are there any players of these games here who are good at them and are avid fans?

I have played pirates but it gets a bit boring and to much of the same.

Any tips are appreciated, I just cant interpret the whole supply demand stuff very well but I do want to get good enough at it wheree by its not a chore so to speak, I also have owned anno 1701 fo a long time, how do you rate that in comparison?

I waited on spore for 3 and a half years, I thought it was going to be brilliant but well knowing the kind of depth people on this forum like well you will have seen all spore has to offer in 1 week, in fact the more geeky of you(That is a compliment by the way) will have it dominated it one day

The initial premise was a game like no other; the end result Im afraid, dumbed down crap where by the fact it has a simplistic editor gets used to mitigate any bad factor it has by fanboys but most people dont buy that theory anyway.

Its clear things have been taken out the game for hundreds of little stupid expansions as opposed to the complete game we were promised

Tribal phase is absolutely dire, creature phase although it seems good initially after speaking to 1 creature which takes all of 8 seconds on land, that same mechanic is used for every other creature in that phase! Seriously this game was hyped so bad I just take hype now as a corporate way of lying

I could go into all the phases and how they are ridiculously lacking but seriously I would be here all day

huge huge huge dissapointment that game

Thanks very much all, have been away for a couple of days there so going to continue with the tutorial.

Also yes I have read the wiki a while ago on screwpumps and a horde of other stuff but the screwpumps thing, I spent so much time trying to understand the wiki on this one area last time around that it kinda ruined my game, I see some of you have included some hints and diagrams in the thread etc so that helps alot, cheers!

Cheers Magellan, I am away to have a proper session on this game now :)

I am actually trying to develop my own roguelike and through doing so I can see why it was stupid of me to spend ages learning directx, this time I am following all the veteran advice :) but anyway to make a game like prospector must have been tricky but it shows alot of promis so I won't be giving up with it.

The answer regarding the "Ooos" helps alot so away to give it another shot

I have read as much of this thread as possible and well I want to like this game but I cant find any guides that explain it, for example whats the best thing to do when starting the game?

I know very little of the keys and also which ship I should get first?

Another aspect is that I keep dying in gas clouds or something. I believe the S means station? The problem is some game starts that is right at the other side of deadly clouds. Also I see a message saying S = scan , L = land, next when I click scan I see like a number of what look like differant sized zeroes or Os e.g 0oo etc, what does this mean? I switch between them but it isnt making much sense at the momment.

Occasionally I shall manage to get docked at a planet and then always get killed? Whats the first things I should be doing? How do I fly? How do I land? On a planet its r for radio, what use does this have, I type hello and get a fixed response but it seems to have no purpose. How do I take missions, I like playing a goal orientated game so whats best to start with?

I think I will like this game but badly need some start game guidance? The thread is huge so worried it will even get seen, that being said I dont want to start other threads but this is where these massive threads fall over in my view.

Any help appreciated
Thanks all!

Firstly hi again all,

I got introduced to DF thanks to captain ducks excellent tutorials , I got a decent fortress up but I never figured out how to use screwpumps and manipulate water properly, in fact some of the more esoteric stuff I never mastered and I have forgotten much since I last played therefore I will update this post when I rediscover the actual names of the mid-end game tools I couldnt master

Playing it again I have forgotten just how good DF is and I am trying out a second tutorial that is stickied this time around. (Not captain ducks ones) Does this new guide cover the use of screwpumps?

Another thing is that mid to end game last time I kept getting heaps and heaps of nobles so I guess I am wandering at which point and how can I stop them so that I can focus on my building.

I never ever saw a megabeast nor magma so I am hoping that the save I use from this new tutorial shows me how to set this up, I also am surprised to learn that actually rocks lying on the ground dont stop building unless they are marked for dumping? (If this is tru I have saved much time )

I have also been playing elona but I need to break it up a bit as well as I want to get in more fights in df this time around, is mike maydays tileset still the best one to use? Also I see opengl DF is available? Does that have good graphics tiles or something? Whats all that about?

Thanks again! Im going to be on DF a while now as want to take my game further

I only have 1 lost suitcase unfortunately but I will save them up, I do have 2 disguise kits though, theres also that quest where you get a bomb but I am wary since I worry about doing something that I am too a low level to handle the implications but on the other hand it would be good to be your own boss so to speak :)

How much karma do you lose per tax evasion? Its just Im wandering if its possible to keep karma above -19 via just not looting adventurer corpses?

The fact that feature is there must mean its possible to make a living that way? Its just I would like to try it but I dont want to ruin my game at the same time, also if I could kill guards it wouldnt be a problem but I imagine they are strong :)

Ok :) btw , I figured out what the scrolls of oracle do and wish I hadnt been selling them, basically I used one and it said something about a beggars pendant but it shot past in the chat window, I then saved the game and clicked elona chat.exe but I cant see the message there. How can I recall the scroll of oracle messages?

According to the wiki it says reads from the art.log file in the saves directory but there is nothing in that file, guess I need to be a very very fast reader next time :D

Im level 16 now and thinking of going rogue........that way no taxes, what do you think? Is it worth it, what are the pros cons?

Hi,

Yeah that sounds like a great suggestion for a team only I can never catch those bells :)

Also where can I get those monster balls?? They havent dropped anywhere since I did the gene engineer quest plus I check palmia, vernis and port kapul general vendors and cannot find them

I went a warrior but reading the wiki it says that warriors will struggle mid game owing to ranged attacks and this sounds about right, so Im wandering what is the best magic classes and any tips on casters?

Slightly offtopic but my in game name is Van-Lenning <------Intentionally spelled it this way but anyway its just nice to know who is playing :) Im on an awful lot at the momment so no doubt you will see me dying alot hehe(My team is 2 rockthrowers, 1 blade, 1 skeleton warrior) NB I have checked the wiki regarding those bells and I am going to try throwing poision at them, also once I verify a succesful method I will add that to my Question answer thing along with another batch of useful tips in the thread. I also intend to add stuff about good team builds but to be frank about it, I still lack experiance in this area but when I get "monster balls" I will try out the suggested teams in conjunction with genetic engineering of non-slave mobs then finally add it all in the form of question, answer. I also just noticed a mention in the prior post to a tip which amounts to using rods of domination to capture bells, thanks for that!

Theres couple of things just came to mind regarding armour stats:

Firstly are minus values good or bad? (In all situations) for example:
shield: [-3,2] <thats DV , PV? then we can have (-2,2) <-------unsure what the brackets are

Another thing that isnt clear, you have say armour, say a breastplate and it will say under examination:

It maintains Luck
It maintains perception

What exactly does this mean? That no matter what debuff hits you your luck and perception wont debuff? I am just reading it the way its written but my assumption is no doubt wrong, would greatly appreciate some feedback on this

Noted, Im actually thinking unless this master thief has obscene negotiation skills the shop was a bit of a waste of money, you see I have really high negotitation, however the way I figured it initially was the fact that a shop buys for next to nothing in comparison to what they sell stuff for so I thought a shop would profit but the rock thrower is selling stuff really really cheap which is not so good.
