hehe you just posted at the same time as me :) but yes I am strongly thinking you are correct, see update above, its cool I had 2 quite well trained squads of gaurds, some of them have broze swords and axes so they took him down really fast. (coffin time, or maybe I should let him rot for be a traitordwarf lol, game gets better and better though, the good thing about this happening is I have a basic cloth making chain, + metal items, bronze silver making chain, still need ore for iron but this will do for a start)

Next caravan I buy silk, but thats me got a clothiers up so can make clothes when needed however I was thinking of putting a drawbridge at the font entrance so gonna check the wiki on that, what do you think? then I am going to secure the walls (After I build more rooms)

just a little update , just had the best trading session ever! I got a good few cave spider silk cloth and a couple of giant cave spider silk cloth + couple of pig iron bars+ 1 or 2 steel + aluminuim+ 2  hematite

So Im thinking I may be able to make iron? + have silk if a dwarf goes on a bad one again! Also I just read the following at the wiki :

Invading goblins (or humans) often carry iron equipment. After successful fortress defense, liberated arms and armour can be melted into bars. This can be a reliable source of iron even when ore is scarce.

The fact theres a good lot of goblin corpses outside my fort so how do I get my dwarfs to bring back all there weapons and armor?

Hang on gems shining, he needs CUT gems I only have rough gems, I think

Hmm dont think this is working, I have thread and cloth, all I can think is he wants silk? have wood, rough+cut gems

just to update he went insane, I had a fair amount of rough and cut gems, loads of wood at the end there, loads of rocks, loads of plant thread and cloth so Im guessing he needed silk cloth or something, now I think I know why captain duck said buy some cloth lol, ow well live and learn :)

On the good side I had my gaurds training regularly so when he took a hissy fit one of my gaurds swiftly put an axe through his head  :D time to build a coffin

63
My logs are running kinda low but I do have cut down trees on a stockpile, do they sometimes want certain types of tree also why would he need trees at a clothiers workshop? I away collecting them just in case :)

64
I have lots of wood

 I am about to start playing again but one of my dwarfs is in a possed mood, he took the clothiers shop and is muttering , rock......cloth.....thread,tree,life
 I am making cloth and thread at the loom , I think there is gems about and rock(not in stockpile) but he isnt doing anything so what am I missing?

I checked the wiki and know how to handle fey moods but I am unsure of what I need to do here

This is by far the best I have done in any fortress so I am not wanting to start a chain reaction of unhappy dwarfs , This is the first time I have had to set up a cloth chain, I have the farmers workshop, a loom, a clothiers

Btw I have plant thread, also cloth, I think I need silk, but when I try at the loom it says needs to collect silk or something, how do I do that?

Hey thanks a bunch! Yeah an upload of someone game would be great :)

Im doing better this time in my game, using bins, have a mammoth amount of rooms, I have every non peasant member in a room also the colour of their needs is white which I remember correctly that means they are all satisfied and I have met them. I also assigned a sherrif and build rooms, weapon stands to meet his needs so Im hoping I will get a mayor soon and that I will get more immigrants next year

I have an archery range+ barracks + ammo stockpile + bowyers so Im going to make some bows and when I set up my peasant army I will hope they pick up the made weapons, im not 100% sure about an army right now as i need my peassants for hauling, in saying that I guess I can leave them inactive until need be.

I also have a craftdwarfs,brewer,masons,capenters,jewlers, smelters and forge and have managed to make coper bars, I am also able to make silver as well since I have native silver.

I have red sand at my location but I really need to get more immigrants and a handle/good production  on things before I take on anymore.

I agree btw my posts are definatly very random where this game is concermed :D Its because it massive in scope and always half way through a post I think "Ow I may as well ask about this and that, which leads onto more lol" However I am getting there now :)

The laison spoke to me last year, I set my priorities , he came back this year and asked the same again, I kind thought he was supposed to bring me the stuff I asked for? (Not a big deal but theres one of those random questions appeared as I was writing this post hehe)

For the most part getting on great now because of folks patience

I will try that :) plan is I will smelt the silver ore into silver bars then make a silver axe or sword

btw does the stone hauling skill cover hauling gems and what skill makes it so dwarfs will collect any bone like items?

Im reading this and I think it answers my question :) that wiki is good

I havent found it yet, just googling here before I continue my game

I spent alot of time on that lately  and more so with the smelting but I will ccontinue to use it and considering that was my first time smelting to have just one silly glitch is a respectable start. Not following the tuts now Im just making a fortress my own way, I want to think big and its just starting to pay of as I wasted a bit of time getting my head around it all but I think I am okay now, if I need to make something I will check the wiki ingrediants

Ive just carved out my specific rooms for my mayor when he comes and just got my first small batch of immagrants so it is looking good, I also got some guy comming to me who will bring me some good stuff next year, but he wants stuff so I hope I havent taken on too much

I have got a bowyers shop, barracks, archery range, mayors rom+office (dug out only), jewlers,carpenters, fishery hut, farm, craftdwarfs workshop

Once I get a handle on all the new stuff im trying I am going to try and get a handle on how to use sand as red sand is at my location

Nice that works well, btw I just struck native silver, is that quite good? Im thinking it will be good for smelting into bars for production but I will need to research more :) After seeing that message I saved and am backing up the whole folder lol

Great tip about the fuel! Didnt know this! Btw I could have sworn there were bronze bars in the smelter and they dissapeared or maybe im going nuts, copper it was in the smelter, I had 3 coke in the smelter so I smelted the copper, that seemed to create copper bars and then I went to the forge and created a copper pick

So looks like I had fuel . Do you know how I could look inside specific barrels and bins? its just I have a barrel on a custom stockpile which is for gems and ore only(specific kinds of ore) and I aam wandering if I did indeed make something out of bronze bars , it would be handy to do this so I can reorganise a bit, but at least I have seen how it works, thanks :) I need to find tin now(Will just start of small making bronze stuff until it becomes second nature all the metals used and then I will gradually move up in quality as I know what Im doing

Hi was going through the wiki written tutorial, I build 1 smelter and one forge , I think I make Coke from bitmus coal or something like that :)

I have been reading the wiki for ages on smelting and forging, I think I followed the instructions correctly, also in my smelter is 3 bronze bars, I think I must have made those but it used up the fuel because now it says needs fuel? I guess I need to find coal or something ? (Im not fussed about being magma safe just want basic smelting and forging working)

I think I smelted nuggets to get bronze bars, so now I have the bronze bars in the smelter, I can see by doing view item in building but I need the broze bars into the forge to make a pick axe and battle axe (I know I dont need to but I want to do it to learn)

Im kinda confused at this point what I need to do so have

Bronze bars in smelter
forge built

Cant create bronze picks

Thanks glad to know Im finally comming up with some semi feasible ideas :) , also yes my bones are not from fish, they are skulls and such , usually from dead people/dwarfs/animals (I think) , so will I need to do something extra from whats been mentioned also Im going to start a new fortress again , I plan much more but this will show the first things I will build:

# = Walls
RS = Refuse Stockpile
FS = Food Stockpile
FRS = Furniture Stockpile
WS = Wood Stockpile
FGS = Finished good Stockpile
AS = Ammo stockpile
GS = Gems Stockpile
CBS = Custom Bones and such stockpiles in this area
F = Farm
B = Brewery
Brk = Barracks
C = Carpenters workshop
CD = CraftDwarfs workshop
M = Masons Workshop
Bwr =Bowyer Workshop
Jwr = Jewlers Workshop
~ = Outside

Btw I havent done entrances so just assume there are entrances

The above is what I plan to do straight away, I also plan masons workshop but just away to check which stockpile he uses? Do you thing the above is a good start to get the tower of the ground? My plan is to get this all done asap and that way I can start making more  complex things

BTW putting the above in code tags messes up the formatting

I also hope people don't mind me asking so much questuions but I just really enjoy learning about DF.

In regards to finding a starting location, should I always put a river in the search(an above ground one) its just on my last map I had a great hilly location which had flux and also trees but It had liek a brook now a river and I for some time had trouble finding a suitable indoor farming location, also what rocks do people usually want at the start? Also I want to make a furnace later so I can make metal and stuff but that wont be until a bit later, I basically want to be as self sufficiant as possible so best area/things with that in mind?

I am also trying to get a good starting loadout which is differant from the tuts so I took 1 axe away leaving 1 but then only took 2 dogs and 2 cats, I took pig tail seeds (Those grow food right?) What else should I take ? (Just looking for alternate loadouts

Im also away to follow the wiki tutorial to see if that gives me some more ideas so I know differant ways as well as the vid tut, which tuts would you reccomend?

hehe just been reading more I have taken some copper nuggets, charcol and I am going to build a smelter then a forge the first chance I get(I have bitmius coal as well) This will really make things fun, I also want to get a handle on irragation as well but one step at a time :) I have read the wiki for both things so hoping I will be okay

73
Thanks alot this all really helps, I have future plans for a supply chain so my final issue is in regards to the take from command, tell me if this would work in theory

heres what I have done: refuse pile one(stockpile) takes default refuse,
refuse pile 2(stockpile) is set to only hold bones and shells,
I then did take from stockpile 1, will that therefore only take bones and shells only from stockpile1 and put it on stockpile 2 (The reason being because stockpile 2 is set to bones and shells only) ?

74
Hi,

I have been doing a fair bit of wiki reading and have loads of ideas , Im thinking of getting an automated supply chain on the go , I have read about the take from restrictions and think I undestand.

Anyway I was wandering lets say I make a 6 by 6 gems stockpile , I then make 6 bins
Also assume there is a furiniture stockpile full of stuff
Assume I have 6 bins

I decide I want all my bins to be used on the gems stockpile and fill them just with gems, then later I may want to fill other bins with only a certain brand of stock , how would I go about doing that its just I read bins were mixed, is it even possible.

My final question , I will do a diagram for
Code: [Select]
# = Walls
R = Rocks
S = Some stockpile
D = door

#########
#RRRRRRRR #
#RRRRRRRR D
#RRRRRRRR #
#RRRRRRRR #
#RRRRRRRR #
###D#####

As we can see the room is full of rocks say I designated a ammo or gems stockpile there would the rocks take up the space and have to be moved?

Thanks again

Firefly: Hehe... what does, "not boring" mean?  I personally dislike RPGs and RPG-hybrids for the exact same reason that you dislike strategy games. Interesting isn't it? Perhaps it's because we don't give enough chance to the other medium to express just how good each really is?

Okay valid point :D , and I can actually say Im loving DF much more than I thought I would, in fact it is right up there with one of the best games I have ever played so I guess I dont dislike strategies as much as I thought! I just must have been buying the wrong ones :) I also bought majesty gold and fantasy wars since joining this community so I guess my gameplay tastes are changing , the games I have bought I can say in strategies games favour they seem to have really good replay value.

Also not boring basically means what to me that the game is interesting and has elements of uniqueness, is not shallow i.e has accesibility but depth at the same time.

I also like games where you think you know how to play then throughout the game the in game quality improves through more play and changes, content becomes more and more as well as functions in game like more controls/menus if applicable. (DF is an example of this)

Like someone says though its very subjective and thats the reason I used quite broad terms when trying to explain what makes a game good, I mean I think we would be hard pushed to find someone who would disagree that a game must be fun. I also notice that many people(like myself) are saying they want a game to be original and I think this is key as well. If a game falls into the same genre as other games then there must be improvement and the game needs to make its presance felt by employing new and innovative systems in conjunction with current well liked systems.

Its a hard thing to categorise as people are at differant levels with gaming, for example I am pretty extreme with many genres of game, I know them well but strats are my weak point. I do agree with what you say regarding people not having tried games long enough and this is why aside from what I have said I wouldnt write strats off and actually I am kinda eating my previous words here because since joining this community I am playing 4 strats at the momment and absolutely loving them. I think where strats are concerned they need to suck you in so you feel a sense of ownership with what you are building and give you a thirst for exploration of the games features, previously strats havent managed to do that for me but not any more! I am really enjoying myself here and I actually want to start again as I know I can do better and do things completely differant .

It appears as with RPGs my gaming is evolving to love strats as well and I guess the point I am trying to highlight is that its not just personal taste but also where a gamer is at with their gaming, for example waaay back I played many FPS games , I loved them but these days I wouldnt play them. I always have a rule, make sure you can play a game before passing final judgement however sometimes people dont have the time to do this and thus there could be many games they would have loved but never had that time to give them enough of a chance for this to happen (This has been touched upon in the thread and I agree)
