DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Miner wont mine?
« on: December 23, 2008, 01:27:28 pm »
Ive already read that a few times over , I original had say 5 or more sets of perfectivly working stairs

1 downstairs
2 up/down stairs
3 up/down stairs
4 up/down stairs
5 up/down stairs

ok so level 6 I couldnt get to it so in my confusion I built a ramp, one up and one down and somehow my dwarf got to level 6 then died of thirst down there

Ok so this time I tried to get a second miner down to 6, I had assumed I had poblems on the other levels so I dumbly removed stairs on the way down so I have

1 downstairs
2 up/down stairs
3 up/down stairs
4 down stairs
5 down stairs <---currently dwarf is stuck here, he cant go up and he cant go down

Level 6 has a downward slope wair I need the stairs going up but I cant make upward stairs

So its a kinda weird prob

If you look at my second example , I now have a more urgent question, how to I get my dwarf back to the top considering:

Theres no function to rremove downward stairways so I can just replace with an up/down

Trying to place an up stairway in a place where an up/downstairway previously worked perfectly does nopthing , nor does an up down stairway

So no up/down , no up, no down so my question is simply at this point how do I get back up where I CAME from? before this guy dies as hes stuck and the blue arrow is flashing so he hasnt got long, not only that starting again isnt a problem, I will enjoy it but I do not want this happening again. The wiki doesnt provide enough situational examples and to me logically

a down stairs sends a dwarf down
an up stairs sends then up to an above level
a down/up stair way is used when you have the following:

Level -1
dwarf wants to go up to l1 ^ and also down to l2 so up/down
Level -2

Having read the wiki alot I would be appeciative if someone can highlight what the wiki tells me in relation to my problem that I have missed?

DF Gameplay Questions / Miner wont mine?
« on: December 23, 2008, 12:54:27 pm »
Hiya As mentioned in my other threads, one miner died so earlier I replaced him, np that worked fine, ok so I do more of captain ducks tutorial and practice with all the menus so I can move stone about, np that worked, anyway I need to mine out a very deep part of the fortress, I have updown stairs all the way down and a central strairway, heck the miners way back even dug that, however I set this new guy to mine and all I have got him doing apart from that is healthcare, he goes and partys and stuff , sleeps and drinks, hes lazy as hell , he even has a copper pick in his left hand so how do I boot his butt so he will mine? Mining is highlighted and he has no injurys

hmm ok just to update , I already have a downward staircase all the way down however it appears he mines if its at a higher level? weird, I need to get down a good few levels so I can follow the tut

OMG guys I forgot an updown stairs on 1 level I think thats what it will be , now way!

actually its because the lowermost level uses an up and down ramp and its  confusing and I think I know how my early miner died of thirst now its because somehow I got him down there using stairs and ramps and I cant get him back up, in this case I cant get the miner down, stairs and ramps wont work yet I previously managed to partially mine it out, this is wierd?

dam I have also managed to get my miner caught 1 level below with only a downward stairway and can demolish and create any kind of stairway to get up? Please advise , guess I could start again but I am unsure of what I did wrong so the same issue will happen again pitty :(

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf fortress COMPLETE newbie
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:45:29 am »
Just some minor stuff now guys/gals , loving the game but as it stands one miner died from thrist even though there was a river near by, however I did have lots of mining to do so perhaps he tried to finish all the jobs before going for a drink, I THINK I had alcohol but I am currently about to do capt ducks tut on setting up a brewery.

So I had 2 miners, 1 died , what I did was goto labour and set one of my growers also to miner, the thing is he unlike my first miners has now skills in mining so I am hoping here just skills up automatically to profficiant miner and I dont have to physically skill him up via a lvling screen?

Another issue is not too far from my fortress these traders are standing about, I doubt they belong to me so how do I utilise them? I also got some message earlier something along the lines that the traders bypassed my fortress. The thing is they aint too far from my fortess. Is the reason the bypassed my fortress carved into rock because I didnt have any amps at my entrance?

One final issue is I wish I hadnt lost that dwarf, I actually have food stockpiles as well , one outside but I recently moved inside, either way how can I get the dwarfs to breed and create more dwarfs? Also if proper working dwarfs come top my fortress eventually is there anything I must do to make4 this happen?

heres what I currently have

2 rooms with farms in the and I can see some plump helmet spawn has grown
2 food stockpiles, one inside
a batch of barrels
My fortress cut into the rock on the topmost level lets say level 0
a level under that containing bigger rooms lets say level -1 . These rooms have a stone and wood stockpile and furniture stockpile, I have 3 masons workshops on this level also, I have 3 carpenters workshops here

On floor 0:
I have a barracks which has been assigned as a barracks, it contains beds
I have a room with a table with 10 chairs , I assigned it as a meeting room as per tutorial so Im hoping and it visually looks like its getting used for eating as well

N.B There ar rocks everywhere , when I assign a rock stockpile if I assign it on squares with rocks does the stockpile still happen, its just I still see the rocks but cant actually see the stockpile icon for rocks?

I cant wait to try another fortress as I know I can do better but I am trying to learn as much as possible from this post + the video tuts, they have helped immensly and as off 2 days ago I cant get enough of this game

Ow one other thing, in game I was messing about mining and I noticed underground there was a square of water, it was flashing and temptation got the better of me so I dug into the water and it all spilled out, my miners didnt die though which I found quite surprising, I was thinking of using this methods to get water to further underrground? Thoughts?

Its fun the first time you play it but it doesnt have much of a story, also Im not sure if it has changed but I ordered it online direct from the site and I only had a mere 3 activations, I wasnt happy it used a drm like system and didnt find out until it was too late so I mailed the guy saying look if I use my 3 activations what is the process for getting more, I never to this day got a reply so I am frightened to format and my comp badly needs it + I bought the game when it was cheaper , its a good game but I felt the price was more realistic as it was in the past, the curent price is the same as some epic titles so I think it is just ever so slightly over priced currently

I really hate that I supported this developer and I am limited with my installs and there (At least when I asked) seems no sure fire way to reactivate . I am planning on donating to DF the next chance I get as one its a great game and two the guy treats his community like human beings by not employing systems which are complete overkill

Aside from the aforementioned bad points the game is decent but it can get boring later but you will get some good fun out of it

So while it is fun I would agree its overpriced and in an incomplete state

Other Games / Re: What defines the quality of games?
« on: December 23, 2008, 09:02:43 am »
I actually like these kind of discussions. In my eyes the following things define the quality of a game:

Immersion
Uniqueness
Content
Gamplay
Good Story
Open endedness
Fun
Not boring
Imagination provoking
Replay value (This is the area nearly all games on the market fail and DF actually manages to nail this aspect)

I think RPGS or RPG hybrids are the best kind of games these days, any kind of game where you get to become some person in a world filled with lore and political choices. I just started playing DF, now heres the thing I generally dont like strategy games as they are all just too similiar but DF seems to not just break the mold but smash it up into tiny pieces and thats the kind of stuff I love in games, if the devloper manages to couple fun , openendedness and non boring play with all this then you have a groundbreaking quality game.

Thats how I see it with what conforms to my personal tastes and actually if publishers actually listened to players gaming hopes and asspirations then gaming wouldnt be in such a shallow poor state that it is these days where they spend time employing ridiculous protection/3 days rental schemes rubbish at the massive expense of game quality and enjoyment.

Thats my contribution to this thread :)

Other Games / Re: Best free roguelike game?
« on: December 23, 2008, 07:57:12 am »
Oof I go away on DF for a couple of days and yet more gaming ideas! Thanks for staying on topic and for the great responses. I will be playing games until Im 90 at this rate, great stuff lol

I have actually been going through vid tutorials for DF at the momment and I have kinda went from thinking "Hey I can understand why this is good" to "Man this is great!" and am slightly  addicted to it :)

I will just respond to the comment about my social life, yes I am a bit anti social thats because I partied mega hard from 15 to 19 and then ended up realising I could do things with my time which meant I could learn and have things to show for my money, like Software/games, I got into PCs and have never looked back. I realise you were just having a laugh though :) thats cool! I am a bit anti-social(actually very because I resent the cost of going out these days plus all the violence and knifings amongst other things so Im a proud hermit and its kinda ironic I am playing dwarf fortress and making an underground fotress haha) and I did actually used to love FPS/violent games but I kinda got sick of them, as mentioned before on these forums I used to even have utterly stupid preconcieved ideas about people who played RPGs until I got to know a person at college (who is a great friend of mines now) who was like "Just try these rpgs" and now I cant settle for anything less :) N.B Soulwynd its fine , no worries , I dont take nothing bad out of anything on this thread so it would be best for everyone to try to stay on roguelikes and such, I conceed , I am anti social and do need to get out more hehe

Ok back onto rogue likes! Im currently looking at dungeon crawl and I WILL try all these, its just I plan to go on DF for a while, its great because even though I didnt mention this initially I didnt think I would get into DF this much! However being older now I always know not to make a judgement on a game until I can play it and because of this mentality I end up getting into hundreds of weird and unique games/genres

Actually guys/gals one final thing, now I am unsure of whether some space text games have been mentioned in this thread but there is a privateer one + some others on the forum which look really cool. To be honest prior to comming to this forum I had never even heard of space text games but some of them look really damn deep!

I would be interested to try this also at some point, another good find as I like to play some of the older games, see where it all began, hehe its funny how I have quite a decent PC , you would think I would never play text games and only the latest and percieved greatest titles , however all thats happened is I can see graphics for what they are.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cant dig down any further + ramps?
« on: December 23, 2008, 07:34:58 am »
Thanks very much. I am totally loving this game now btw! One final thing I am unsure about channels , still am not 100% on their purpose.

In regards to ramps, well you know that level that I could go below well what I did was pressed shift and > to go down 1 level, I couldnt build any stair ways but I was able to buil a ramp so does that mean that there was a high and low area on the same level?

My main issue now is understanding the purpose of channels though, hopefully captain ducks vid tuts cover that at some point, Im just following those for the time being and I think I will be playing DF for a long time, it has quick feedback but absolutely massive depth at the same time and it has renewed my faith in text games and whats great is I am not even good at it let and still have loads to learn!

Cheers people, yeah I have kinda found that out about the preplanning and you cant always do everything the way you want.

I think this is a great newbie help thread and Ive also come across superb video tutorials and the more I do well I am starting to really like this game. I did ask one question on the thread which has been asked loads as I didnt notice the answer was already there dow! Anyway to save newbies doing the same , heres the video tut link

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=28477.0

Also the version of DF the guy uses is :

v0.28.181.39e Graphical Repack (PC)"

which can be found at:

http://dffd.wimbli.com/category.php?id=18

I am using the default DF and am just starting to get used to it so I am unsure whether to move to the graphical repack, however it is handy for newbies, who like me want to be able to follow the tuts to the letter.

Thats me been reading fo days on this game now and I havent even seen a fraction of it but now I can honestly say its highly enjoyable.

Ok so essentially all I need to worry about is putting 3 ramps at my underground fortress entrance?

Thanks for your reply and yes I think I have hit the max depth as I have dug very deep so that makes sense.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cant dig down any further + ramps?
« on: December 22, 2008, 02:14:16 pm »
Hi,

I am trying to follow a video tutorial and I have dug a downstairs then updown stairs and got considerably deep , level 17 I think? However I cant get any deeper, i also struck a mineral called olivine, niot sure if that has any relevance with not being able to dig deeper?

Also I dont really get the differance between ramps and stairs? I assume that ramps enable you to get to a hump of rock that is on top of a rock on the same level? I dont know how to tell when that is the case though? I have looked at the wiki and Im able to get stairs working well but not sure about ramps, even after reading the wiki

Any help greatly appreciated, I am starting to really like DF now though!

Yeah captain_duck I appreciate you will be wanting to have a good christmas and I wish you well with that!

I will say though you are on to a big winner with those tutorials, I am a complete newbie and have went through the first 3 and they are awesome! I plan to go though many more today but once uyou have done all the newbie ones maybe move onto how to handle end game fortresses and such. I realise the videos are alot of work but from my own newbie perspective they are just what I need and are great, really easy to follow.

I am starting to love DF and I havent even scratched the surface yet, thats thanks in no small part to the massive amount of help I have had on this forum + you video tutorials (I like with the ones I have seen how you try to explain everything thats happening and you are giving newbies a kickstart which will result in more people playing DF)

All the best for christmas & NY, Have fun!

One things fo sure you have got me petrified of carp haha

Actually one thing captain duck, are you using a graphics package for DF and if so exactly what version are you using? Its just I want to use the exact same setup as yourself until I get better and I can follow your guides top the letter, its kinda weird as my default Dwarf fortress , well the icons look subtly differant to yours and theres a graphics package one I also have but that still looks a bit differant, all this is one area I could use advice on?

Just to update thats me about to do tut5, I am enjoying these. Starting to be like Woah! in regards to DF and I will link this post in my newbie post in which I ask lots of help questions as this stuff answers them well. (The reason I am only onto tut5 is because I wanted to get an area and make it exactly like the tuts + make sure I understood everything)

Keep up the good work  ;)

I am unsure of what the content is but if its a video explaining how to play the game that would be super awesome! Away to check them out

Haha! Just checked the first youtube one and it appears thus far my assumption is correct, firing up DF right now! As a newbie these should be very useful to me, big thanks to the OP!

Appreciated!

I didnt expect there to be anything like that out yet, thats great they realise modding is a massive part of the alure to bethesda games. If the truth be told I like betheshda , I just worry if their direction is going to be feasible longterm.

Batheshda aside I would like to see game companies forgetting all this need to get the latest and greatest lighting/graphics/physics and maybe just aim for respectable graphics which will run on most peoples PCs and less harsh graphics = more content, also I think lets dump the voice and get back to actually reading again because of the quests are well enough done, the fact they are in text wont matter and once again this = more content (I do appreciate the absolute little in the way of an immersive main plot F3 has that it does have other good arreas but I cant get ove how the main story ends, I say this as someone who has explored most of the map and done a big amount of the filler, my point morrowing managed to make filler feel like it was needed to get to the main story and in my view F3 didnt achieve this, although this may not matter to many of you , it matters to me)

I have done loads of F3 filler quests but tbh having a good main story is also very important to me and thats where F3 really falls over in my eyes. I should also add make lots of parts in the story that you just wont be able to do until you have seen the world, I liked how morrowind had a lack of urgency and you new roughly what you needed to do but it was like "go explore" , consequantly I have morrowind+ all expansions and I did a royal A ton of quests lol, storyline ones included and I still never reached the end and I havent even visted the werewolf island, and I was on the game for dam months! I enjoyed it alot and I will go back to it, now thats replay value right there because there is so much great content, sure nothing perfect but I just feel epic games seem to be consigned to history. I guess people just dont like having to work for months to attain a goal or actually work in a thriving world, I just love true open endedness
