I eventually want to see dynamic civs. for example dwarves, elves and humans dont always come as the high tech large awsome amagawd civs. Instead you can give races certain traits that affect how they start and what they do during world gen. lets say humans are generally very diplomatic and liek to trade. they do, but if a civ spawns near hostiles who cant talk or something they are unable to do that and thus expand normally and they become primitive cavemen. While another civ peacefully trades with the dorfs, elves and crap and prospers, expands and becomes a "superpower".
On the otherhand, lizard men (just an example) arent very diplomatic and dont end up being very large or expanding past swamps the other civs dont want. but one day the humans come tra-lalalalala-ing on by and are like hey, you guys are cool, have some weapons and armor inturn for this here land. the lizard men accept, becuase humans are such good diplomats and start expanding and become not so primitive.
This could be very cool in a way that a diplomatic race starts near a race that needs to be tought and helped out a little, but doesnt like other people. in the mean time some race that cant talk or have diplomacys attack the humans wiping them out, but the primitive race has their tech and carries on their legacy by defeating the un diplomatic race and becoming a sort of replacement for the humans or what ever. but in the smae situation with dorfs, instead of humans the dwarfs wipe out the primitives and live to wage an inteanse war with the other race due to their love of war and lack of tolerants for the undiplomatic.
