I've got X-Com CE running pretty much flawlessly under Vista.

Same here. Also, Dwarf-Com sounds like a neat idea. Hey! Perhaps it's Toady's secret project!  :P

That's funny, I've already added this feature (let all laws to C+ at start) to the next version of the game. ;)

I could easily make the CCS have fewer "lives" as well.

Is there another entrance to the well?  One that they may be trying to path to?

I'd look at placing a hatch-cover over the stairway and locking it to prevent access, except when you want them in there.

One-way corridors?  No.  You can make one way doors, which use pressure plates on each side: one to unlock a door as a dorf approaches and the other to lock it as they leave... but such a device is useless as a dorf won't deliberately path through it.   (The pathing sees the door as locked and ignores the pressure plates that would unlock it.)


before D11 I placed a pressure plate before a door into a legendary dining room, somehow they got in...

For amusement, trap the next one in a metal cage and sell him to the elves...or trap the elf siplomat and sell her to the humans. A caged elf ought to be worth something to them at least, if you can get the liasion injured but not dead.
