DF General Discussion / Ant Colonys?
« on: June 13, 2010, 04:22:08 pm »
Is there a point to them? That would be cool to dig right under them and find like a bunch of little ants, but, that does not happen... Can we even capture them as Vermin?

DF Gameplay Questions / Q & A on Military and other Combat Thread
« on: June 12, 2010, 05:18:01 pm »
Hello everyone,

I am making this topic because I find that everyone is very upset with the whole new military screen. With the whole 'I can't get them to do moo ova 'ere!' or 'Dey me training wrong!' So I felt a need to write this topic about some common questions and my own viewpoints. I plan on lowering all the questions about the military screen. Maybe this will get Wikied and Sticked? But I don't think it will go that far, but I do hope it will.

the Basic Info about the Military Screen
First, lets get the basic screen out of the way. Most people will be utterly confused of all the options you can do and whatnot. First of all, take your time to have a look at it, do not open it for the first time when you see a threat! I recommend you fiddle around with it while there are no threats on the map, giving you some practice time with everything. It is not that hard to get confused after you have tested and messed around with all of it. You could just generate a small world to mess around with it! Once you get used to all of it, it will be easy, I promise. I find the Military screen very opening and organized. Could use a bit better organization though.
After you get about 20 Dwarfs, you will gain a Noble Position called Arsenal Dwarf. Probably the most cherished noble of all. Like all nobles, they get a special task. they manage Equipment changes for your squads. I love them because they make no demands and only require an office!! Sucks they have some bugs, or so I notice. You might have to assign a sheriff before the position shows up, guess you need authority before you can get a Arsenal Dwarf, it might not be a bug, but It sure seems like one. assigning equipment takes a LONG TIME for Arsenal Dwarfs lacking the Organization skill. I think they even mess up, because some units will run around with Leather armor when I told them to have Metal Armor. Do you know that Noble bug? The one where if your Leader dies, you cant Assign any other Nobles? This one counts :'(. It took me to get 74 Dwarfs before the position showed up. I dunno if it was something I did or if it is really a bug.

the Position Screen
Not really much there is to talk about here, considering everyone gets that you should have a Militia Commander to run the army. When I start for a military, I usually create a squad until I get a good name for class ;D. I recommend No Uniform in the start so you can create your very own equipment for your squad, unless you want a mixed squad, it is fine either way. Don't really see any bugs around there, but I made this post to find and answer any bugs and or issues so reply with any issues or concerns here. All I notice is that sometimes when a Squad member dies, there name stays on the list, just remove it and it should go away. It also shows units you can put into another position that is already in the squad.

the Alert Section
All I can say is that you should only use this screen if you want to activate them or you want them to go to a burrow or defend a point. Don't try to get them to train, as training right now has a huge bug, but we will get to that later. The Alert Section corresponds with the Schedule section, so most changing will go in that section of this screen. Sometimes, it takes units some time to respond to the alert, but I never seem to have an issue here. For now, just create one Alert,  'Move Here'  by pressing 'C' and naming it by pressing 'N'

the Schedule section
No doubt one of the most confusing sections of the entire Military Screen. Mainly You only use it for Paroling, Resting, or defending the Burrows. Well, if you want them to  go to a point on the map or patrol, go off the Military Screen and click 'N' on the main Screen, you can mess with the sliders and whatnot if you want to, place it where you want them to move to. If you want them to Patrol a spot, press 'r'. Make one of the points you place where they start off, then make another Point as there second point to go to, do this until they go back to your first Point, making a complete route. Name the Point or Route if you want, and then go back to the Schedule on the Military Screen. I would start off by using the '/' or the '*' key to scroll until you see the 'Move Here'  Alert at the very top-middle of the screen. Press 'o' to give them an order.
keep pressing 'o' until it says station, and press '+' or '-' to how many you want to do that action, I recommend how many units are in the squad or at 1. Then go left and make all the positions Green by pressing 'Enter' then go down to the point you want them to go to.
For paroling, press 'o' until it says Patrol Route, go down to the route you want them to do until the route is a Lime-ish Green color. select the positions (or Soldiers) you want to do that route and press '+' or '-' to how many you want to do that action, I recommend how many units are doing the Route or at 1.
IMPORTANT! PRESS 'SHIFT AND ENTER' to exit the screen! As 'Escape' cancels it! Most other things are the same way, place the Burrow and select the burrow and whatnot.

the Uniform Section
I usually delete 'Archer' and 'Metal Armor' Uniforms and delete everything in 'Leather Armor' and re-name it. This is pretty straightforward not really anything here should confuse you at all. Only bugs I notice is that when selecting a specific Leather Material, there is a VERY long number of 'Forgotten Beast Leather' I think it list all the Forgotten beast in the entire Game (including ones not on your map) that can be turned into leather. This is very annoying when trying to find a specific 'Forgotten Beast Leather' so just don't wear any 'Forgotten Beast Leather' if you can. I am not so sure about the Color Section as I don't really Dye anything, someone should make a post about this so we can help others!

Equip Section
Basically what units are going to be given what set of uniform. Units still have some Path-finding problems to there gear and don't notice that there is a object they can equip. I find it 90% Effective of the time. So no big worry. They should find there Equipment eventually. You can Make them have there on additions to equipment or have there own uniform here as well. Careful what you equip them with, if you tell them to wear two Steel High Boots when they are already equipped with Two Steel High Boots will cause them to carry around Two Extra Steel High Boots

Supplies Section
Not hard to find out, I Recommend no Water or Booze or any food if you are dealing with a threat that must be taken care of IMMEDIATELY! or Carry any Drink and Three Food for stationing and Patrols. Drinks need Waterskins and food needs Backpacks.

Ammunition Section
Very easy section to understand, and the title points it all out. Here, you assign how much ammo a squad or Hunter gets, and what type. You will always have the Hunters tab as they are 'currently the only way I can manage to get arrows to be used (other than profit from merchants) To assign them ammo, all you have to do is click the 'c' button, and select the ammo they use. Remember what weapon you equipped them with, you do NOT want to give someone with a Crossbow some 50 Arrows. Use the '+' and '-' to adjust how much ammo they will carry. Next, I recommend you give them a type of material, though it is not required, as I am sure you don't care if they use +Elven Bone Bolts+ or +Iron Bolts+ but there is always a chance that they may have to face a horde or blood lust Elephants. Simple and no need to deeply assign anything. Also, you should never, ever EVER! Put your ammo in bin's. Dwarfs fail to notice that all the ammo is in a bin, meaning you have to make sure your Ammo Stockpile Bin Number is at 0. Very easy fix though, just press 'q' and go over to your Ammo Stockpile until it is flashing, then press 'C' to make the maximum bin level 0, that way they will not put ammo in a Bin in that stockpile.

Hunting
I count Hunting as Military, as you can die and win, so yeah. I do not know to much about hunting (mainly because I have enough Cats & Dogs & stuff in cages to slaughter, Cows are milked so no death the white Cheese creature!) I know you can give them the job in in the 'Hunting/Related. As Far as I am aware, I think they also have to be in the military? Also, if they run out of ammo, they don't seem like they want to get more. But it is fixed by removin the Hunting Job and waiting a Second while the Game runs and giving them it again. Hunter Immigrants also drop there equipment if they are not automatically set to hunt. I think you can fix this with Dwarf Therapist and telling them to hunt. Again I can not give you my Opinion as I don't really use this.

KILL THIS THING NOW!
Everyone makes this a big deal, most people think you have to make them move to the Creature with Points. Did you all forget about the damn 's' Key? Just press 's' then 'A' or 'a' and then move your Cursor over the target you want them to kill and press Enter. You might have to scroll over to the Thing you want to kill or press 'L' for a list or the Rectangle for multiple. After they kill there target('s), there task is to still kill it. I don't know why it would still be there, but I guess they fail to remember they should kill it. This is why you should have just poured magma on it. Any who Just go to the Squad Screen and Cancel the order.

MOVE HERE!
Same as Above, only 'm' instead of 'k' I find it more effective and Less time consuming than the Schedule Screen.

Why will they not shoot!
as of .06 they will never use ammo in combat, instead, they will bash the enemy with there ranged weapon. You can get them to Hunt, but no matter how much ammo is in there quiver, they will never use it. I think it is a fail to notice they have ammo for there weapon in there inventory or they think they have to go and get ammo from some other place but can not get there so they cancel the action. Besides REAL dwarfs fight with a weapon! Not some ranged thing. and a Real Magma Dwarf Pours lava over there foes instead of Using a Weapon!

Why wont they train! all they do is sit there and starve!
Seems to come up a lot.  Group Training is bugged, for some people. I can get training to work 60% of the time. But they do just sit there and starve and De-Hydrate to death.Any who I think that TRAINING REALLY DOES WORK! You just need a Militia commander with a high Teaching Level. I have seen my units train Dodge for a while and end up Legendary Dodgers in one Season. They were dehydrated and stuff but they lived! Individual training on the other hand, works quite well, just make it where only one guy trains at a time, and the rest Inactive. All I can say is that they should get some real combat in them. They get more Exp Killing things and taking a risk of dying than training in the first place! So let them run around and Mark some wildlife for killing so they can get some skills up. Just make them attack something alive for Armok's sake!

You should request some other problems so I can solve them. Also, I am not done, I plan on extending the list very far!

Is there any difference from having a tile 'a dusting of mud' and 'a pile of mud?' They don't seem to have much of a difference, they both allow you to grow crops on it.

I get like, 2 troglodytes, rarely a troll, and some bird thing only every season or two.

Are there not supposed to be like, SIEGES of trolls and troglodytes?
Is there a way to make more?

24
The title says it all, I know Giants can take them down if they have  two two-handed weapons, but what about the old 'atom smasher' and 'cave-in'

DF Gameplay Questions / All they Do is Train Dodging
« on: April 03, 2010, 12:07:23 am »
I have my Millita commander (also the Captian of the squad) training a squad of a mix of spear/axe dwarfs. They do not practice any weapon skills, all they do watch an lead in the dodge training. I will stop them from training and they still decide that they will teach dodge training.

DF Gameplay Questions / Skeletal Dwarfs? Are they possible.
« on: March 06, 2010, 10:17:33 am »
I was having a discussion about how being a skeletal Creature allows you to walk on land and swim. Then someone got the thinking that you cant start with a skeletal dwarf, which is true. Why is there a Graphic set for a skeletal dwarf, when they cant become skeletal at all?
