DF General Discussion / Ant Colonys?

Is there a point to them? That would be cool to dig right under them and find like a bunch of little ants, but, that does not happen... Can we even capture them as Vermin?

Report from my fort with no water on the surface: Kuletfer "VaultBeast"

So after the first year, I got two Military units with effective training, I decided to dig below 5 Floors.
On the 6th floor, I hit an Underground Cave System, with a HUGE OCEAN! So I was thinking, I shall flood the surface so I can farm!

Problem: I never understood Pumps and crap, So I guess this will be the REAL map that I will have to work with Pumps, can anyone give me some advice about pumps and stuff? I read the Wiki, but it still confused me.

I just noticed there's no Ammunition section. It's a huge part to getting hunters to go hunt (besides having a crossbow AND A QUIVER). Crucial detail: never bin your ammo - dwarves don't know how to assign ammo that's binned.
Oh yeah. Wow I got some stuff to add when I get around to it (prob after the FIFA game.) Plus I am still testing some other stuff so give me some time folks. Thanks for the help and response too! :)

I saw the Elves have a battle with the Elves, but they never declared war so I did not count it.
The Elves won. :'(

The elves beat the elves?! Then that means everybody lost...
The reduction of elves in the world with no casualties is whose loss?
I never thought two civilizations of the same species would ever dish it out...

About training. After some strange manipulations with military screen i managed all my 6 military guys to do some ind. drill and even group traning. Well the ind. training IS NOT BAD at all. After a year i've got 6 legendary spear/axe/sword etc dwarfs, For 12 years they have killed about 200 goblins) Thx to individual training.
Yeah, I was fiddling with training. I found out that if the militia commander is a good teacher, they teach WAAAAAAAAAY faster in group training. Looks like some people need to realize teacher plays a huge role.

A few points that jumped out at me.

1) Colours are more distracting than anything, IMO. I had to highlight the text to read it. At least use less of them or it loses any emphasis effect. Also the blue font has zero contrast against the grey. Try a lighter one, not darker.

I think they even mess up, because some units will run around with Leather armor when I told them to have Metal Armor
Actually, I think that this is deliberate behaviour.

If you have them assigned to equip with partial matches (as opposed to exact) then they will grab whatever they can that fills the same role as what they have been told to equip. I have dwarfs with wooden gauntlets and leather armour when they are told to equip steel. As better (and closer to the listed) equipment becomes avaliable they upgrade.

3) I'd make it very clear that the Arsenal Dwarf position opens up but isn't automatically filled. At time you speak about them arriving, which might lead some to believe they turn up like a Hammerer or other noble.

4) The existing equipment bugs need to be discussed a bit more in depth. For example, assigning a uniform to an equipped dwarf will cause them to carry multiple items (eg, 3 axes in one hand, 4 sets of leather armour, 2 right gauntlets but no left, etc). There are plenty of workarounds floating around. Check the bug tracker.

5) I need to check training, but there are ways to get an entire squad to run individual training at once without too many problems. I think you just set the squad to inactive and give them a barracks assigned for training. They will stay as civilians, but still run individual training drills. Until group training is fixed I think this is the best method of actually building a military.

6) As far as hunting goes, I've never gotten a hunter to work from my existing dwarfs, but immigrant hunter/rangers already carrying a bow and ammo will hunt as long as that ammo lasts.

Most of my adventurers are strikers, and I find punching very effective at knocking your opponent out.

Anywho, I ran across a steel Rat. Yeah, a STEEL Rat. At the time, I thought I could take it, but I ran after it cut me open a couple of times to only die of an infection.

Thanks for the post, I've been wondering how the military works. I did, however, find the blue font a lot harder to read than the others.
