DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Captured fire imp: What can I do with it?
« on: April 22, 2009, 06:39:14 pm »
Fire imps have [SWIMS_INNATE], so it won't drown if you throw it in the brook.

But you have a convenient fire starter, so why would you want to drown it when there are so many creative ways to kill things with fire?

Law of Naked Wrestling: There will always be clothes on the floor in your barracks.

Law of Misplaced Priorities: A dwarf will always be drinking, eating, sleeping, or on break, whenever you need a time sensitive task completed.

Law of Misplaced Priorities, Trading Corollary: The caravan will always leave before your trader stops moving goods to the depot.

That time travel explanation reminds me of Primer. What an intentionally confounding movie.

I'm glad to see Kodak is doing stuff. Since he's technically a ghost and survived 'The Day', is there any possibility of him showing up at the next fortress?

Also, awesome update.

Finding out just what those items in purple are on the trade screen.

Figuring out why I was losing masterpiece wood items when all my stockpiles were next to a magma pool.

Combating giant bats by stationing champion wrestlers adjacent to the chasm.

Using ramps to dig out a frozen aquifer.

you can built constructions more than one tile at a time.

What?  HOW?  o_o

When building walls and floors and the like, use uhkm to change dimensions.

They go together. When you get the dangerous HFS, you get the valuable HFS with it.

I see your tricks, Error Message. You're just another instrument to tell the story of Sebshoskeshan!

Nothing gets by me.

Also, it's cool to see Kirea get a notable role within the fortress. Keep up the excellent story, JacobGreyson.

Okay, Mr. Gimp. I must nitpick my character.

The entity is called Grigrak, not Jimm. Jimm is the current dwarf incarnation of Grigrak, and that Queen Urist is killing Grigrak again should only become aware to him at the moment of his death. Otherwise, a miserable existence is fine.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dungeon Master and Vermin

Don't tame a lot of vermin. You'll only ever get a few dwarves who adopt them, so you'll have pages and pages on your animal screen of tame lizards, rats, and roaches.

And tame vermin can't be used for extraction jobs, like fire snakes, I think, and maybe one or two others.

Best just to catch them, forbid the useful ones, and let your dwarves eat the others.

So, you have marksdwarves fire at airborne goblins launched by bridge-apult as they fly from one tower to the other?

Yet another in the long list of things I have to try.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: High/Low boots
« on: April 16, 2009, 06:40:18 pm »
From the wiki page on armor, low boots and high boots are functionally identical, except high boots weigh a little more.

And why you can't make high boots probably has to do with your civ, like how sometimes goblins wear masks instead of helms. It's just semi-random civ preference towards certain clothing types.

That's normal. Kobolds can avoid traps and pick locks. Too bad kobold ambushers are just as much trash as their thieves.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Legendary Mode Questions

Yeah, when it says that a creature was one of the only ones of its kind, it is either a megabeast, a semi-megabeast, or a power, and it means that only a few were ever alive, since none of them can breed. In a medium sized world, or a 'Create a new World Now!' one, usually there will be four dragons, four titans, four bronze collossi, and four hydras, in addition to a greater but limited number of minotaurs, giants, ettins, cyclopes. These will be killed by lucky adventurers or lye makers, so they can get pretty rare.

The best way to find that cave is memorize it's name in both the DF languages and in English from Legends mode and then go find one of the towns that the dragon raided and ask them about nearby places. Eventually, they'll tell you about the cave, and then it will be marked on your map.

And when you export a local map image, one of the things that gets created is a list of all the civs, their dieties and their rulers in a text file, and in another text file, the current population of all sites, including caves.

Follow-up: Those are probably your soldiers tearing each other's clothes off as they wreslte. Letting them practice with weapons will make them stop ripping their clothes off.

As for all the clothes lying around, deactivate the barracks, stand down all of your soldiers, set their armor preferences to clothes, and then give them all cabinets and coffers. If you're lucky, they might pick their crap up. If not, you can just toss it in magma.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Most awesomest dining room blueprint
« on: April 15, 2009, 06:18:59 pm »
Do engraving on different levels actually contribute to the room?

No. As the room designation does not span z-levels, it is impossible for other levels to contribute their value to the room. That's hardly an issue if you're more interested in interesting architecture than room value.

1: Maybe your dwarves have more injuries than is apparent. Remember that you can scroll on the wounds screen, so maybe they're missing an eye or something.

Bonus: Deconstruct the depot. That should work.
