Other Games / Re: Terraria... Looks like Minecraft + Metroid?
« on: April 24, 2011, 12:47:39 am »
Minecraft-like gameplay, Final Fantasy-like characters, platformer-based action... is there more to miss out about this?

I'd actually play it myself. I wonder if they're gonna place some demo to mess around with soon.

Is the player a homicide detective, meter-maid or park ranger?
I was close to asking in my post if a meter-maid counts as police-like branching.

Hopefully this isn't another joke topic, due to the fact how easier roguelikes are easier to make... based on what people say.
Quote
# how could a roguelike benefit from tablet PCs concerning usability and playing?
PC vs Android... i dunno what android IS. So i have no idea.
Quote
# do you think that you`d like to play a 'roguelike' with that non-standard setting?
I like having a customizable world, or hell, have one specifically designed, like a world thats like ours.. probably.
Quote
# what content should be in (important for a first version)?
Well, an important thing should be this. Firstly, there needs to be the basic necessities like combat, chatting, movement, and so on, then later making chatting more efficient to allow peaceful negotiation to try talking down criminals. Then later, since it's realistic, a forensic part, allowing investigations to continue to send others across the world to find them.

Basically, what i would do it work on movement and combat, and the start of the policeman career as a mere recruit training to handle things, from handling in keeping up with running criminals (stamina), making sure you can shoot straight... even though guns are hard without knowing how the wind and gravity pushes the bullet, which a recruit wouldn't know... and probably a lieutenant? I'm not sure.

Anyways, i don't know how law enforcement fully branches, but i think it starts from a recruit, which is trained until they pass, then pushed in as a police officer, then they work hard alongside a partner for... whatever... until you get in on some action as you patrol the streets, or whatever. I don't know whats further. Maybe you just do a lot of work until you're a lieutenant, than eventually when the chief steps down you be him? Or branch off to be a forensic specialist? Maybe control the entire police force in the roguelike? I don't know.

But yeah. Basic combat, movement, and the start of the policeman career. FBI career could come in a later version, as if i'm not mistaken, SWAT is also part of police, so theres another way to work it.

# would you like to have complex tactical combat, how could it look like?
Could be anything. A policeman can't be too rough, but if required, they can hit that point. I guess if a proper fighting system was in order, which can branch off not only in natural fighting, but maybe where they can go on vacation every now and then to have some martial arts training, they could work alot easier with melee combat.

Shooting... probably the same thing, unless you do aiming and all that on limbs. Not every cop shoots to kill, but if it's the only way to stop them, like if during a situation that requires it, not if they're running the hell away, then they'd go for the legs/arms... but if they, for example, have a hostage, and are open, it could take either two perfect snipers to blast that gun away from pointing her, but he might be able to move it back to her and shoot before you can run, so in a situation like that... you may have to go for the head, or do that gun blast thing and then the arm... but i've yet to hear of a hostage situation with more than 1 sniper.

# any ideas for a conversation system?
I've seen conversation systems that try to calm people down... i barely ever win.

Conversation is very hard, especially if you don't know what you're doing. It's more like a "try to get in their head" situation without them talking. If you can figure out how to converse right with someone, they can crack easily.
Quote
# any ideas how to 'simulate' driving in a turn-based game?
Never seen one try it, so no.
Quote
# would you even play it if it has only ASCII graphics in the beginning, thus the usability might not be that great?
Having the graphics customizable is easier, but for now, it could be kept curses, and have a text file determine what they could look like. Maybe add a way where graphics positioning is possible so people can make them look in different areas, like up, down, left, right, etc, but that would require ASCII graphics, so for now, it can go both ways.

Thats all i got on those.

Most of the times when i make it into a harder area, it's not impossible for me to survive, even at lvl 9. I went everywhere to fight dwarf kings, even through high level areas, and i've made it unscathed away from death. You just gotta know how to use the terrain to your advantage, because going into an open one, will kill you.

And those annoying slimes... i hate their speed... I wish they weren't so impossibly fast.

Oh god, I am HORRIBLE at this game. I'm lucky if I can make it to level six.
  • Don't explore too much, you'll be overwhelmed if you explore the wrong place, just as if you run around all enemies, you'll be overwhelmed too.
  • Keep track of the minimap and the red dots.
  • Try handling quests as they popup. They popup as soon as you kill your quest target, but takes a at least 10 seconds to show on the screen, unless you're near it already.
  • Certain caves should not be attempted with certain classes. They can be VERY tough.
  • Quests are for your appropriate level, but don't RUSH to get to them. Try picking off whatever enemy is around you before moving towards it, otherwise, you'll die before you make it.

Hope these tips help.

That's not very productive! Plus you will have rather high casualties. Getting to level 10 on your own is pretty fast... just keep chasing down those quests. Then you jump to the mountains and join the high level players fighting gods (defensively, stick close, don't trigger enemies from multiple directions) - just don't loot anything before other players inspect the bag, since you are not contributing much.
You sure about that? I went in a rape train of 16 players, hit max on my archer, decided to die, and go knight, went back in at lvl 1 and noticed 4 were missing, but we all survived and i pushed far enough to hit lvl 14.

Rape trains make exp easy, fast, and fun. You just have to make sure everyone doesn't die. Mostly, we traveled throughout the roads and annihilated monsters for an hour.

It's crashed twice upon entering, and once while trying to use the market. Each time I had to wait for my character to disconnect. This is... infuriating.
Would be easier if the 1 minute only applied if you were in combat.

I made a quick check to find out the right thing on google just now to see what you're talking about. Well, this is what i found.

http://forums.xbox.com/35950624/ShowPost.aspx

And since it's saying it's the second one held since january, it's not constant. It would have been nice if it was though. But with what i hear with Microsoft in debt, i doubt they have the income right now to offer a constant free weekend. But, i'm not with the times, as it's been past a year since i've heard of it.

Well, since i got the information already, i know why i was able to get on randomly. Seemed strangely lucky to me, because i JUST got the internet on the 360 one day before the weekend event. At first i thought their service messed up, but at least i found out it wasn't.

Silver Accounts such as your own aren't allowed to play multiplayer normally. You'll probably have to start paying if you want to keep playing online.

If you bought your Xbox or any of your games new, there's a reasonable chance that there are free vouchers (for a month or something like that) included. Look through your cases and paperwork you got with it.

Theres the thing.. i got this game months behind, and i never had any sort of voucher or anything, i was just able to play online for a few days, but now it won't let me, and i keep trying to find out why.

But that free weekends thing sounds like that must've been why i could play, but i don't get why i could play from friday straight to sunday if it's only weekends, so i don't know...

Well, with no way to see what Free users get because their site is bugged, i can't ask why i can't play online again.

You see, as a free user, i was able to play for 3 consecutive days, now in this hour, i am unable to join, because it won't let me join for online activity, so i don't know what they're doing. So i can't tell why i can't connect back to play with people online.

Does anyone know what the problem is? Because i want to get back to playing with people, but their site is bugging out.

Plus, the last time I used it about 2 years ago, it liked to re-enable itself in the msconfig settings after I told it not to. That really, really irritates me when a program does that. I recall some funkiness after uninstalling it too, like I couldn't seem to get rid of all its files.

Did you try deleting it's files in safe mode?

We also only allow players who are mature (18+) and the reason for this is that we require you to remain in character in the game and most underagers can't do this effectively.
I've played many roleplaying games with people under 18, and they handled pretty well. You may not see a lot, but there are quite a lot somewhere under 18 who can rp effectively.

I just wanted to give my cent on that.

Yeah, i've been working on songs myself. Trying to make custom ones based on what i think is good to me.

So far, i got these up:

Over Your Head
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Powertrick
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Over Your Head still isn't finished, and i like how Powertrick ends... sorta. I've also been working on another song, but it's so short it's not worth mentioning. So yeah.
