DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Bizarre Recursive Artifacts

... Dwarves, as you can see, occasionally name their artifacts after themselves.  It is believed to have something to do with personality.  We need all the data we can get, so would you check his personality numbers (if you can) using one of the DF run-alongside tools, that would be great.

Dodok (Clasp BridgeSpear) Sazirlokum:

Stress : 70
Neurosis : 69
Compromising : 64
Honesty : 38
Lawfulness : 34
Friendly : 30

Other personality traits (Confidence, Leadership, Thinking, Cautiousness, Excellence, Urge, Perseverence, Helpfulness, Organization, Company, Thrillseeking, Artistic, Rebelliousness) are all at -1 (not active).

Please. Don't just through around random disorder names. It isn't funny.
Who is this addressed to?

Yes. Dwarves, as you can see, occasionally name their artifacts after themselves.  It is believed to have something to do with personality.  We need all the data we can get, so would you check his personality numbers (if you can) using one of the DF run-alongside tools, that would be great. I've never done that myself, but it should be possible.
Can you recommend a (Win-XP compatible) utility for that?

My Tax Collector's name translates as "Axe Knife-Morals".

That's an awesome name for a Taxman.

Doesn't say who did it...

If you are at war with the Hippies, then possibly a Dwarven Caravan Guard shot him? If not at war with them, then an Invader likely got him.

Not too many other creatures use missile weapons.

I use mass Plant Gathering to level them up a bit... it's pretty quick, and allows me to sell cooked food to Caravans. Masonry (building my Wall and Towers) also levels them up, but more slowly. Then I switch to "pumping air" to continue leveling them, then draft them.

I fed a Gobbo to my pet Alligator, inside a constructed building with a roof. One of the Gobbo's arms landed in a nearby pond, OUTSIDE.

The building has no Windows, and no Door on that side. Pretty odd, no?

How many extra Picks have you forged?

... My guess: none.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: will my fort flood from my wells?
« on: November 10, 2009, 02:16:56 am »
You could always add in a pressure-plate activated floodgate to automatically shut off/refill the well reservoir. Also, use a door rather than a floodgate cause they're more responsive.

I use a similar idea... but instead, using a pressure-activated switch to disengage the Windmill-powered pump.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The Windmill is built on top of a 'C'-shaped wall (to raise it out of reach of vandals), with the Gear Assembly in the hollow spot underneath the 'C'. One Gear is controlled by an emergency switch in my Control Room (as is the Emergency Floodgate which can seal off the Well Room). The other Gear Assembly is controlled by the pressure plate.

Another possibility: Dwarven Roulette

Build two "killer" rooms... set to collapse or flood with magma (or whatever) when a control lever is pulled. Put the control lever for Room A inside Room B, and vice versa. Set each lever to only be pulled by a specific Dwarf... one of the grude-bearers. Draft and station them in the rooms. Pause and issue "Pull" orders. Works best if you set up a Dwarven-logic circuit that locks the other lever out when one is pulled.

It was outside briefly... but the temperature is fine. It's Warm (but not Hot) all year round. My outdoor Ponds never dry out or freeze.

Could CrazedBrew be getting dehydrated? He's free to go wherever he likes (ie: not chained up), but he spends all his time in the Cafeteria.

Should I chain him up and dump buckets of water on him (designate him as a Pond)?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Is there an Alligator Veterinarian on the Forum?
« on: November 10, 2009, 01:33:07 am »
I think my Alligator is sick.  :-[

Briefly... I caught an Alligator in a Cage Trap. When my Dungeon-Master arrived, I tamed it. I started feeding it captured Goblins (obviously...). Naturally, I stripped and disarmed them first.

It killed the first one, and earned a name... CrazedBrew... but during the fight, it apparently took some bruising (light grey wounds) to its head, including a concussion (brain). I tried to feed it another, but it didn't want it... it just ran around the room wildly, without actually biting the Goblin... I had to send in a Military to kill it. At that point, I stopped trying to feed it Goblins, and just let it hang out wherever it wanted.

Ever since then, CrazedBrew the Alligator has been going downhill steadily. Without even being involved in any more combats, it now has light grey wounds EVERYWHERE on its body, inside and out. More than two screens worth of wounds, including Eyes, Kidneys, Heart, Lungs, etc.

These wounds just seemed to appear spontaneously... I'm pretty sure no-one has been whacking on my Alligator, and it was only lightly wounded in THREE spots during that first Gobbo fight.

Any ideas?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: my first megabeast

Just now, I got my first-ever Megabeast... a Red Dragon.

It was a bit of a disappointment. It appeared on the edge of the map, started walking (instead of flying) towards my Fort... and stepped on a Cage Trap.

My Dungeon-Master tamed it.... What should I do with it?

Chain it up out in front of the Fort?... it would look pretty bad-ass.
Put it up for adoption?
Put it in my Zoo?
Feed Gobbo prisoners to it?... that might improve its stats.

Now I'm getting engravings of Dodok Sazirlokum creating Dodok Sazirlokum.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

... If I had known that was going to happen, I would have cross-trained him as an Engraver... so that I could end up with:

Dodok Sazirlokum, a masterful engraving of the Dwarf Dodok Sazirlokum holding up the Artifact thong Dodok Sazirlokum; engraved by Dodok Sazirlokum.

"Dodok", by the way, means "clasp" or "clasped", while "Lokum" means "spear"... so his artifact jock-strap seems to be named "Clasp my Spear"!

EDIT: The temporary save is here, by the way:

Considering that Bridges only toss creatures (and objects) a few tiles, you might consider setting up a "Goblin Pinball" game instead... a large room channeled out several z-levels tall, with a retracting bridge at the center of the top level, surrounded by a few similar bridges one level down, and several more two levels down... in a basically 3D-pyramidal shape.

You could set up the timing by laying down a series of water-activated pressure plates in a tunnel, with a lever-controlled floodgate at the source end and a drainage grate at the other end. Connect the pressure plates to the bridges, so that when you turn on the water the top bridge flips first, followed by the ones below it, then the ones below them, and so on.

With a little ingenuity, you could even use pressure plates on the bottom floor to total up your point-score, with the outer ring being worth the most points.

Seems like a rather odd place to wear a phylactery... don't they usually go on the other end?
