DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Effin Cage Traps, How do they work?
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:02:53 pm »
So, according to the wiki, the way to keep Urist McSuicide from reloading a cage trap in a dangerous situation is to forbid the trap. Okay, then...

How?

I tried forbidding the cage--no luck. There doesn't appear to be any way to actually forbid the cage trap. So what does one do?

Either 't' and then forbid the Mechanism in the Cage-Trap, or just bulk-forbid the whole tile with 'd' - 'b' - 'f'. Either one works.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pastures
« on: April 21, 2011, 08:01:09 pm »
Im new pastures (last fort had a lot of starving animals). I tried making a large walled in plot outdoors and made the door to it pet unpassable once they were all inside. But it didn't seem to work...What should I do?

Use 'i' to create a zone. Then press 'n' to mark it as a Pasture, and 'N' to set which animals are pastured in it. Your Dwarves will run over and drag the animals into it.

ok, I've butchered some animals (like donkeys and bulls) but I havent gotten any skin from them...

Should be labelled "Fresh Raw Hide". It goes to a Refuse stockpile.

what is microline good for?

It's just a rock.

When setting up my Control Room... for all the various levers that control the functioning of my fort... I try to make each lever out of an appropriately-colored Mechanism. That way, I can tell at a glance that this RED bank of levers (made from Kaolinite Mechanisms) controls the Magma pumps, and this BLUE bank of levers (made from Microcline Mechanisms) controls the water pumps, while this BROWN bank of levers (made from Schist Mechanisms) controls my array of wooden cages containing Puppy-Bombs, etc.

Naturally, I add <N>otes as well, but the color-coding directs my attention to the proper part of the control room.

Another use for colored stone is inlaid mosaics. You can build a constructed floor directly on top of a natural floor, so you can easily turn a big open room into a picture of burning elves, or a representation of your favorite kitten sandwich, or whatever.

Workshops can also be color-coded. Masons are white, Carpenters are yellow, Craftsdwarves are blue, etc... and by using appropriate stone, you can color-code the workshops in the same pattern.

Hollow out a large area one or two levels up from your Magma-forge workshops. Set up stockpiles there for metal ores, flux, charcoal/coke, metal bars, etc. You could also set up a small lunch-room with chairs and small food/drink stockpiles fed from the main food stockpile. You could even consider setting up the bedrooms of your Furnace Operators, Weaponsmiths and Armorsmiths down there.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can I make robes?
« on: April 21, 2011, 05:04:48 am »
You can't. It's a cultural thing. Some Dorf-Civs use High Boots, others only use Low Boots. Same with Robes.

For some reason I cannot seem to make robes.

Maybe your Civ hasn't discovered Robes. Did you try a Leatherworker's Shop?

You should add a <N>ote to the site:

The Night Creature is [IN] Out

... I have silty clay in my stocks screen under stone ...

Are you sure it's not Silty Clay Loam? That soil type is not usable for Pottery or Ceramics.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: My baron wants dwarf leather clothes.
« on: April 21, 2011, 01:08:09 am »
In our Paradox Community Fortress game last year, our Baroness (named after me!  :D ) liked Iron Bars. She even used to go down to the Magma forge and make them herself... fulfilling her own mandates.

You can't get much better than that.

If you are farming on muddied rock (instead of soil)... could some Dwarf with a neatness fetish have cleaned up the mud? This causes the farm to stop working, AFAIK.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Armor Equip Limit (In-depth Question)
« on: April 20, 2011, 10:08:04 pm »
AFAICT, the mismatched equipment message means your dwarf changed their mind on what equipment they want while they're going to get a piece of equipment. For example, if Urist McMilitary is going to get a no-quality steel breastplate and Urist McArmorsmith finishes a good steel breastplate, Urist McMilitary will decide he wants the good breastplate instead and cancel getting the no-quality breastplate.

IMO, it happens way too often for that to be the sole cause... or even a typical cause.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Faster than a Magmaing Bullet
« on: April 20, 2011, 10:06:22 pm »
If the area of the inlet (down in the magma sea) is clear and unobstructed, then magma can be pumped amazingly fast. The main limitation seems to be how fast magma can flow in from the sides to replace the 7/7 glob that your pump has sucked up.
