HFS, Chasm and underground river are all limited to Mountain biomes, and Magma is limited to extrusive volcanic facies... so the chance of finding those four features PLUS Sand, flux and Bauxite (all three limited to sedimentary facies) in the same 2x2 embark are pretty close to zero.

Not impossible, though.

actually its the other way around blue emu...

Its the G_FPS that handles how fast the display updates.
My bad, you are correct.

A frame in this case is not graphical but related to the movement speed of a creature.

... I assign a random immigrant to do the brewing since the skill only effects speed.

Not true, AFAIK... Alcohol has a 'hidden' quality modifier. Surely you've noticed the Happiness modifiers from "Urist McAlcoholic enjoyed a fine/wonderful/truly decadent drink lately".

Isn't it kind of sad that all the work you put into a fortress...it all goes away once something happens? Kind of disheartening, but I guess you learn from mistakes lol

You can always reclaim a lost Fort with a new bunch of Dwarves.

I think it's too dangerous to unpause the game with uncapped FPS - you press space, press it again and... years have passed.

Doesn't the FPS cap only affect the display update rate... not the actual running speed of the game?

... my current (6x6) map has 138 z-levels.

OK. HOW THE F**K did you get that right?!?!?!?!?!!?!?!?

TELL ME!!
My max i got was 50.
... Normally you need to have "extreme cliffs" on the embark area.

You'll find it in the Wiki pregenerated worlds archive, as Lathondur Minbaz

And whats so masochistic about 6x6 maps?

Low FPS. Of course, I like to play maps with lots of z-levels... my current (6x6) map has 138 z-levels.

(v)iew units and hover over the miner. Go to his inventory and forbid the backpack and waterskin that he's carrying - he'll drop it. I don't know what the problem is, though.this?

The miner will not discard either, regardless of forbid or dump settings. Screw this.. game would be a lot more fun if it was more complete.. Same problem with all pet projects.. they're awesome, until you try to use them <.<

Should be using "Dump", not "Forbid"... and no, the Miner won't discard it. When some other Dwarf has a spare moment, they'll walk up to him, take it from him, and dump it.

6x6. Because I'm a masochist.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your fort?
« on: December 17, 2009, 03:33:59 am »
My "Rocky Spire" fort is developing apace.

When I first embarked there, I named my Lumberjack after myself (Blue Emu). Unfortunately, my namesake later encountered a named Fire Man. Courageously standing his ground in the middle of a forest fire, he managed to kill it with his Axe, but not before being set on fire by his opponent. Overcome by heat and pain, he collapsed unconcious into the flames and died a heroic and crispy death.

The event was recorded by our engravers:

... there's a bit of "artistic licence" in that engraving... Sackcunning was already dead by that point in the battle.

With the wood, either enclose a BIG area, send the woodcutters/haulers out with a military escort, or just import it.

Another option is to hollow out a very large two-z-level tall underground room directly below a forest, prop it up from below with a lever-activted support, then channel out all around it. After recalling all your Dwarves to a safe place, pull the lever, collapsing the forest into the huge underground room. Then roof it over at the first underground level (to prevent enemy archers from standing at the rim and taking pot-shots at your Berry-Pickers, Lumberjacks and Haulers).

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Workshop placement
« on: December 17, 2009, 01:57:49 am »
I like to put my export stockiples near the exit to the trade depot... so I often use a three-level system for workshops:

ground level : export stockpiles
level z-1 : workshops and small working stockpiles
level z-2 : main raw materials stockpiles

Each workshop room has its own staircases directly connecting it to the raw materials below and to the export stockpiles above. The in-room working stockpiles are fed (via 'q' - 't') from the main stockpiles in the room below.

Typically:

one Planter at max skill
one Brewer/Cook
one Lumberjack/Carpenter
one Mason
two Miners
one Administrator/Trader/Mechanic

I figure that I don't need a Metalsmith/Armorsmith/Weaponsmith this early, since it takes a while to get those assembly lines set up anyway. A Mechanic is more useful in the early game.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarf Liason offering Sand?

The imported sand could never be used for glass though.

I certainly haven't managed to do so. I've almost given it up for now... distracted by the arrival of my naked Queen, and the need to get my Magma Smelters and Forges running to equip my Military.
