You might find it interesting to download a free visualizer or two... just to be able to look at your Fort once in a while. It helps you to keep the layout straight in your mind.

Stonesense is pretty good... you can find it here:

http://stonesense.googlecode.com/files/stonesense_1_0_RC1.rar

... and it looks like this:

Another good one is Visual Fortress 3D... you can find it here:

http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=1272

... and here's a shot of the same Fortress as shown above:

Note that these are just visualizers... you don't use them to PLAY the game, just to examine your Fortress and get a better idea of what it really looks like from your Dwarves point of view.

DF Gameplay Questions / The Empress's new clothes?
« on: December 16, 2009, 02:56:58 pm »
Something odd just happened in my current game.

Having struck Adamantine fairly early (42 Dwarves), my Queen arrived, "dressed as a Peasant", with my next bunch of immigrants. No surprise there. What happened next was a bit surprising, though.

While my Immigrants were still crossing the map towards my Fort, all my idlers flooded out to meet them. Greeting the new Queen? Not quite. They were all picking up clothes off the ground. I thought that this was a bit odd, since no-one had been killed recently, so I took a closer look.

It seems that as soon as my Queen entered the map, she took off all of her clothes! She's now running around naked. Her inventory screen shows nothing... not a stitch. She has no possessions listed on her z-status page.

She's not crazy... not by the normal Dwarven definition of the term, at least. She's quite content, not running around babbling or anything. She's just decided to rule in the buff.

Is this "normal"?... normal for a Dwarven Queen, I mean.

I am most definitely dwarves.

They look like dwarves, and I never specifically changed the option.

He means switching Dwarven Civs... there are usually three or four to choose from in the <Tab> menu.

Or slap a hatch-coner over them. That gives you the option of enabling/disabling them at will, by lever.

Deers are secretly the ones that run the dwarven world.

They don't take any crap from anyone, either.

Why is my Animal Trainer feeding my cage-trapped Deer with Turtles in order to tame them? Are my Deer carnivorous?... or maybe my Turtles are actually a type of plant? I'm confused...

Tried dropping water on it yet?

Nope... I was also thinking of building a floor out of it, collapsing a (natural) level onto it, then digging it out again.

Have you tried building it as a wall and then designating the top of the wall for sand collection?
Might work
The top of the wall reads as "Rough Sand Block Floor".

I'm confused how a dwarf "in the brook" managed to live long enough to get hungry and thirsty without drowning.

In one of my own Forts, I had a Dwarf survive being trapped in the brook for so long that he learned to Swim.

It was a special case, though... I had just connected my Moat to the brook, and while the Moat was filling with water, the brook was varying between 4/7 and 6/7, for quite a long time.

This is slightly frustrating. I have a dwarf in my brook. I accidentally caved in a section of brook while channeling for a few water wheels. I just dug a ramp and the dwarf came right up out of the brook. That part was simple. Now I have another dwarf in the brook. He's thirsty and hungry now and won't leave. I have two ramps and a set of stairs that he could use. But he doesn't.

Any idea how to get him to go eat or drink?

Have you tried drafting him into the Military and stationing him up on land at the top of the ramp? Of course... if he's already unhappy, drafting him might tip him over the edge into a tantrum, but it's better than drowning.

Could download the mod that makes some stone  magma resistnat, especially alunite.

Anyway, your fort looks tiny, what map are you playing on 6x6?
And how far in does your fort go into the mountain

Yes, it's 6x6. My Fort is mostly inside the mountain, but even so, it occupies only the South-West quadrant of the map... North is to the right in that picture.

Can an Artifact be further improved by encrusting with Gems or studding with Metal? I suspect not.

Does a Masterwork Anvil improve a Blacksmith's skills? Does it even give him a happy thought for admiring it while working? Again, I suspect not.

Do you have Magma and either Bauxite or Adamantine?

A real Dwarf would use Magma to cast his above-ground Fort in one piece. Then it can be smoothed and engraved... and Obsidian is more valuable than common stone.

I did a search and the only thing I found was a post by someone that they modded their DF to allow making of glass from special rocks to be bought from caravans, as an emergency measure in case of a mood requiring glass.  It would have smelter reactions to go with the sand rocks, if that is what you have.

I have only the usual Glass Smelter reactions. I suspect that this is just a bug brought on by version incompatibilities between v32a and v40d.

Here's a shot of my HUMUNGEOUS mountain:

... I just struck Adamantine, by the way... seventy-five levels below the crest of that hill near the center of the map. I'm going to NEED it, for mechanisms. I have Magma, but no Bauxite.  >:(
