Creative Projects / Freeeware game podcast
« on: August 03, 2009, 11:22:37 am »
Me and some friends have put together a freeware game podcast where we review freeware games, some new, some old. We just finished our first cast where we covered 4 pretty good freeware gAmes. Anywho, it should be up on iTunes by now. You can find it by searching for the halforum.com podcast and there should be one called "land of the free, home of the save" (not sure if that's the title we're sticking to.)

So far our plan is to a mix of casts where we all bring one less well known game, like this cast, or a cast where we cover a really established freeware game, like dwarf fortress, or battle for wesnoth, or dungeon crawl.

Anywho, as this is the site of probably one of the best freeware games around (tied with wesnoth for me) thought yall mIght have some thoughts on some good games to cover, or interesting ideas for the show, or just general ideas on the concept.

We're definitely going to do a dwarf fortress one, but it's gonna take a while as I'm gonna have to sell the other guys on it. They know enough about the learning curve to be afraid. Although we do have a bloodlines game going on the forum, so I may pull those guys in for a pinch hit.

DF Gameplay Questions / Marksdwarves aren't carrying ammo.
« on: May 27, 2009, 06:24:20 pm »
Anyone else had this problem? There are plenty of iron bolts sitting around, they have quivers, but they don't carry any damned ammo! Sorry for throwing this question right next to another one, but 2 really irritating problems. Any ideas whats causing this?

Edit: I should point out that they do carry wooden bolts to the targets, just when combat comes around they won't carry the good stuff.

DF Gameplay Questions / Zones zones zones!
« on: May 27, 2009, 06:16:06 pm »
I can't get my dwarves to drink from my well or the other designated zones I have, and they continually leave the fortress to drink from the river. What can I do to fix this? The zones I have are set up surrounding the well (which is also a very busy meeting hall), and there are also 3 other zones set up where the river comes through the fortress. Instead of all of these, they wander to a non-designated, incredibly dangerous area!

What am I doing wrong?

DF Gameplay Questions / Mods with graphics
« on: May 08, 2009, 05:44:06 pm »
Was wanting to try some mods (spec Chaos Reigns, but could be others) and was wondering what would happen if I threw in the standard mayday tiles with a modded game? Or, are their mods that include good tiles (I noticed that fallout mod does)?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ever get in a design rut?
« on: April 19, 2009, 06:45:15 pm »
So I just keep redesigning my fortresses over and over again. Like, I'll get maybe a year in and not like it so I'll restart, then have to go through the time recreating worlds (cause I forget to savescum a good starting loc) and then lather rinse repeat. Its driving me nuts. My last one was going good until I breached a glowing pit by accident and lost like half my dudes, plus my magma channel was evaporating faster than it was filling for some weird reason. Hopefully this one will be better, but I dunno.

What do yall do to get out of ruts. Have a specific goal in mind? Walk away from the game for a whle? Name dwarves after family members?

DF Suggestions / Nobles (make them more than a target for murder)
« on: April 04, 2009, 01:27:03 am »
Let me start by apologizing for being late to the dance. This probably has come up, and I will be Urist McDouchbag for being the 50th person to mention it.

As they stand nobles are basically either a massive middle finger pointed at the player, or a massive walking suicide note. Either way, while the mechanics are interesting, I don't think they fall into "working as intended" (although maybe I am way off here).  Now, I think all the disadvantages are more than justified. A bunch of entitled douchebags should be a "royal" pain in the ass (pun intended). But there simply has to be some advantage to having them. So, here are some thoughts

1) More nobles (quality + quantity) should equal better trade possibilities. As opposed to some little mudhole of shitheels this is now the home of a Baron! You should see more rare items, things that shouldn't be available in the surrounding civs readily.

2) More serious attacks. The moment I get a baron(ess) I should be seeing serious seiges with trolls. So far I have yet to see a single troll and I have a king ffs. I think that having a member of the royal family present should make you a target for everyone in the world that hates you, to one degree or another.

Had some more ideas, but these seem to be the simple ones. If these already existed (and I just didn't know) excuse the post.

DF Gameplay Questions / Trying to redo a starting location
« on: April 01, 2009, 06:00:59 pm »
I found a beautiful fortress location, and I thought I had a good supply of a sedimentary level, but it turns out its only on a couple squares. So I backed up the save, abandoned the fortress, and tried to find it again using the finder (to mess around with the size to get more sedimentary), but I couldn't. Is there any reason why that would be? Or is there a better way to find it?

DF Gameplay Questions / How can I export a local map image (1 z level)
« on: March 31, 2009, 10:37:25 pm »
I noticed in the main fortress sub forum there is a thread about a super awesome starting location. I actually just pulled on up myself (chasm, magma pipe, HFS, Bottomless pit, great cliffs, iron, sand, and wood on a 5x5) and wanted to post it somewhere, but I can't remember how to take a picture of 1 z- level of the entire map as was done in that thread (linked below). How do I do that?

DF Gameplay Questions / Serious lag
« on: March 30, 2009, 09:14:48 pm »
I'm having some serious lag in game, and can't figure out what's causing it. Maybe its just that my fortress is too big, but I swear I have had one this big before, with no problems. Maybe the difference would be the magma I have, but I dunno. Here's my lag settings:

Pros:
G_FPS=25
Partial Print = Yes = 26
Priority = High
Temperature = Off
Weather = Off

Cons
6x6 embark site
Over 100 dwarves
Brook and Magma Pipe

Computer Specs
E8500 (clocked to ~3.15)
4 gigs RAM
Vista 64
4870X2 (not sure if that even matters for this game)

With this setup my frame rate has dropped to ~25 which makes the game barely playable. Its strange, because before I broke 100 it seemed like I wasn't having that big of a problem. Anyone got any ideas, or is it just that my embark size is too damned large (doesn't seem that big to me...?)

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf Coma?
« on: March 26, 2009, 08:42:30 pm »
One of my dwarves had his leg chopped off after getting ambushed by some gobbos. I was in the process of putting the countesses bedroom together. By the time I had assigned it I saw that there was the dwarf sleeping in her bed. And he hasn't left, for 2 seasons. She doesn't seem to mind, guess its the noblesse oblige, but still it begs the question, do dwarves go into comas?

DF Gameplay Questions / Magma pump mini-project
« on: March 24, 2009, 09:04:35 pm »
I finally found a good starting location. Everything I want except sand (and I dont think I have HFS, but whatever). Best part is that I get regular ambushes. Much fun is had, and many gobbos slaughtered by my champions.

Only problem is that the magma pipe ends like 5 z levels below ground level. I could go the easy route and just move my forges all down there, but that simply doesn't seem efficient. Therefore I am trying to create a system where I can pump magma up into a small cistern which I can then use to power my forges. Once the magma is there, I believe I will be fine, but I am having a hard time figuring out how to do this.

Originally I tried to set it up with three pumps sitting on top of each other, with an alternating channel on each side. I was under the impression that I could control the direction of the pumps. If this isn't the case, I guess I can just run them in a line. Not the biggest problem.

A bigger problem, however, exists in how to properly power them. I can't figure out if its safer to use a windmill/floodgate combination (once the cistern is full I can shut off the floodgate) but this is difficult as I am ~5 Z levels below a wind source.

The other option , and this would be preferable, is using pump operators. The stations holding the pumps are 4x1, with the pump in the middle, as below

I'm thinking that I can somehow use ramps to allow the pump operators access without burning them alive, but I am not sure. Does anyone have any advice. I really like my fort, and am worried that if I do this wrong I will destroy my fortress. Also, since I don't have the option of channeling into the magma pipe, do I really have to use a super agile dwarf to breach the pipe to keep him from burning alive?

Any help would be appreciated

DF Gameplay Questions / keeps generating the same world
« on: March 21, 2009, 01:46:02 pm »
I messed with the design your own world options, and now my DF keeps generating the same world over and over again. I've changed the seed to random again, but I still keep getting the same world over and over. Any ideas?

Edit: If I generate from the design your own world I can get a different world, but from the create new world option I still get the same map

DF Gameplay Questions / Can't find a good starting location
« on: March 21, 2009, 12:42:34 pm »
I can't tell if my standards are simply too high, but I am having a hell of a time finding a decent starting location. All I ask for is the following:

River
Flux
No Aquifer
Magma
HFS
trees
Iron

I have generated ~20 worlds and I can't find this. The few ones that have come close have had almost no trees and had terrifying surroundings. For 40d it seems like there are almost no pregen worlds  I'm trying to find a good place I can build my first major dwarf fortress. Any advice, or am I just asking for too much?

DF Gameplay Questions / Queen stricken by melancholy
« on: March 15, 2009, 07:49:30 pm »
I found adamantium pretty early in the game, and because of that I was unable to meet any of the queens requirements before she decided to go all melancholy on me. Will another king/queen come and replace her? Or did I just waste almost an entire season dumping tons of money into her stuff for nothing?

DF Gameplay Questions / Rancor pit
« on: January 16, 2009, 05:19:41 pm »
Ok, so I just had a thought inspired by some crazy labrynth I saw being built in a succession thread. Grates can be attached to levers right? So I could theoretically build some kind of pit trap to drop people (who have "displeased me") into, which of course would be filled with the nastiest monsters I could catch. I think I have finally come into the game now (I'm a bit of a noob), and I want my Rancor pit.

This can work right?
