DF Gameplay Questions / How can I update a saved game (or can I)
« on: January 13, 2009, 02:53:24 pm »
I have a pretty solid fort going right now, and while I would hate to walk away from it, I want to get the newest version (particularly for the order forbid after drop without which I am slowly watching my military all die). Is it possible to transfer a save game from one version to another, and if so, how?

DF Gameplay Questions / Is there any reason to have a sherrif?
« on: January 13, 2009, 01:38:23 am »
Sorry for the flood of questions, but I am new to the game. For the life of me I cant see any reason to have a sherrif or fortress guards. Any kind of justice system just encourages the hammerer right? I've been doing fine-(ish) with my first fortress with no sheriff. Am I missing something, or is he just something peopel allow for the extra challenge?

DF Gameplay Questions / Misplaced artifacts
« on: January 12, 2009, 04:41:45 pm »
Can't find my artifacts. I had made a stockpile specifically for them, and they showed up there for a little while, then dissapeared. I noticed that a couple were being worn, but I am not sure where the others are. Is there an easy way to find them?

DF Gameplay Questions / Water supply
« on: January 11, 2009, 09:28:36 pm »
I'm trying to keep my dwarves a little better organized. Less running about and whatnot. How can I make an internal water supply so they don't leave the fort for agua? I have a river running through my fortress, but I'm not sure how to access it without flooding.

DF Gameplay Questions / ADD soldiers, what to do?
« on: January 11, 2009, 09:18:21 pm »
So, my first seige ended.....not too good. My soldiers were cut down and I lost an axemaster to say nothing of the tons of poor poor recruits whose bodies littered the field. Learning from that I built some serious defenses, including some massive pillboxes (filled with loads of marksmen) long trapped entrances, drawbridges, etc.. My soldiers trained night and day, and I could only think to myself 'next time, it will be different, there will be....a reckoning!'

With autumn comes some much needed merchants, and since they are much needed, so to does another seige. I was lucky (unlucky?) enough that the seige popped right next to the merchants, who downed a couple gobbos and bought me some time. Then I proceded to activate my soldiers. They would all be in well designed stations that would butcher the incoming goblins. Victory would be mine.

While waiting for my soldiers to get into place I watch the goblins ruthlessly hunt down a couple of other merchants, then noticed that the wagons were almost at my base. But hark, what jackassery through yonder ascii breaks? Tis my soldiers, all running outside of the fortifications one by one, all with the mission 'pick up items'. They all leave the fortress and run to where the goblins offed the merchant guards, and I guess take gear from them.

Let me take this moment to say I was lucky. My soldiers were well trained and even outside of the fortress and strung out they managed to cut down all of the goblins (~15 including 2 masters) with limited losses. But WTF were they doing outside in the first place??? They've never tried to pick up gear before? Why NOW, when it is of utmost importance that they don't?

Any thoughts, cause I can't allow this to happen again.

DF Gameplay Questions / Garbage Dump issues
« on: January 07, 2009, 04:59:13 pm »
I can't seem to get my dwarves to put the garbage stone in the garbage dump. Its all marked D, I can see that, and the dump zone is active, and there are dwarves that have clear refuse orders. But they'll just sit without heading there. Its not all bad, since I marked them the dwarves don't use them for projects, but its still a pain.

Any thoughts?
