DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: What to do with sea serpants?

I figured as much.
Where's my code update that lets wild animals make nests of their own, Toady!?

Couldn't you first build a room for the serpent, then place the nestboxes there and finally flood it and release the creature?

Or does the game freak out when it comes to underwater nestboxes too and they won't work?

I'll make a note then to use more sensible thrown-out-of-my-ass numbers then in the future.

Well for your ideas, there's always the Suggestion forum.
To your questions?

Mugs are currently only usable as trade goods. It's in the plans though for dwarves to use 'em to drink alcohol but that's for later.

And if by your desire to make your dorfs "change their pants" you mean getting rid of worn clothing and putting on new ones, you can make a civilian outfit through the military menu and have every civilian dwarf in a squad using the civ outfit. They'll go and grab new clothes whenever the old ones start to go bad so they'll never be naked. There are some issues with miners and woodcutters though, because those jerks don't bend to your will as easily.

Also, if you go down the route of military squads for civvies, you can also order them to carry alcohol as long as you got enough leather skins or metal flasks to go around. They're a lot faster to drink from than barrels.

If you mean cleaning the actual clothes, ehh, dwarves do take baths but I don't think it cleans the clothes. I do recall that someone made an utility that allowed you to clean items from contaminants though. But that's sort of cheating. You could just build a dwarven washing machine, have your filthy underlings gather in the room and throw a little water in. That should clean clothes from stuff like blood and vomit, and you can clean the place up later on either by waiting for people to take up Cleaning, or an utility.

Yep. I once had a dwarf decorate the same large gem over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over because it was the first thing he started decorating with bones and large gems can't be moved because they lack any appropriate stockpile.

You can move 'em actually. It requires traders to be present though, and you can only move large gems one at a time, but it can be done.

It's actually usual behavior. They also look for the "closest" item through z-levels, so if you have a weapon stockpile right below a craftshop where you put a decoration order through, the craftsman might go 10 levels below to grab a crappy training weapon to decorate instead of the gold goblets you have 2 tiles from their shop.

Also, as long as there's a wide variety of bones to decorate with and the craftsman doesn't go to eat, drink, sleep or on a break(AND no one comes by to take the item back to storage) the item in the shop will be worked on until it's been decorated with every kind of unique bone you have in the fort.

I wish, I wish, I wish that it's the RNG evil biome wildlife thing he mentioned.

The biggest change that I've noticed in FPS happens around 100-150 dorfs.
Although the better you have your fort designed and the embark area size do contribute a lot to FPS.

I managed 45 FPS a few times with 200 dorfs just by screwing around a lot with pathing the dorfs would do. There's bunch of tips about pathing anyway, like "don't use up/down stairs" but I don't know just how much it would impact gameplay whether or not you used 'em.

Would you do a favor to us lazy bastards and put a quick summary of the events that unfolded during the streams?

DF stands for "Do Finish, old chap", said while sporting a tophat, monocle and drinking tea with ones pinky extended.

It's really been six months?
I sort of stopped caring years back so my sense of time when it comes to the eventual release of DNF(and the disappointment it turned out to be, for some people) is sort of screwed.

Then again, I can't remember any other game which has been under work for that long(although wasn't it canned at some point anyway).

I'd dive for cover once loading the save if I was you.

The other half is burning babies.

Anyway, underwater forts are doable, although it's up to you to decide how to accomplish your feat of building. One possibility is making the fort in a lake which freezes. While the whole thing is one huge block of ice, you can start your building project, although it's a good idea to keep an eye on at what time the lake melts. Easy way to avert that, turn off temperature once the lake has frozen, it'll never melt, once your fort is ready, enable temps again.

Another idea, make a huge cavern underground. Build as you like. Pump in water. PROFIT.

There's also the possibility of using magma to make a cast in the ocean and mining that into the shape of a fort.

In the grim future of Dwarf Fortress in the 41st millennia, there are only Duke Nukem Forever-release schedules.

There is a lesson to be learned from this thread.
And that lesson is that if you enjoy DF, you better be ready for loooooooooooong waits between content updates. At least the various bugfix updates are done faster, but yeah.

My money is on halfway of February. Let's say.... 17th.
