Other Games / [GIVEAWAY] Pixel Piracy! [COMPLETE]
« on: January 20, 2014, 02:09:16 am »
Hello, everyone!

Alex Poysky, creator of Pixel Piracy, has generously given Bay12 a full fourteen Pixel Piracy keys to celebrate the Steam release.  Alex is pretty busy with development, obviously, so I'll be hosting.  And, in case you hadn't heard the good news--Pixel Piracy is up for an Indie GOTY nomination, so come check it out!

Prize drawing will be held on the 31st of January 2014, at noon (-8GMT).  I've got the keys themselves, so I'll PM you if you win, and there's no need to link your account :D

Requirements to join:

1. Must have joined Bay12 before January 1st, 2014.
2. No escaped lunatics!  Please don't be shy--there's a lot of great people here with fun stuff to talk about.  Head down to General Discussion and make some friends.
3. Make up a pirate name for yourself and post it!  Or maybe describe the figurehead of your ship.  Something like that!

Take care, folks, and I wish you smooth sailing.

General Discussion / CHALLENGE: Flight of the Twelve Behemoths 2014
« on: December 22, 2013, 02:03:04 am »
So, the 52-book challenge has been really fun to participate in, but I wanted to try something different.  The idea is that you pick 12 goals for 2014 that are reasonable things that you've somehow had a really hard time getting done (not necessarily a month straight of work--could be more, could be less).  So, no "lose 95% of my body weight!  Somehow!" or whatever--things that you've got plans for and time mapped out, but you've had trouble mustering the motivation--or maybe just the courage to pull through.

Most of these I've been sitting on for 3+ years now and they don't even take that much work, so I'm going to get them finished in 2014.

Here's mine:

1. Run one mafia game per quarter
2. Read Les Miserables
3. Track down and eat ichigo daifuku
4. Write "Knots of Hay" [30-part web serial thing]
5. Translation project [no more details since I plan to publish]
6. Polish and attempt to publish one short story
7. Sew or knit something
8. Read through Dickens and attend the local Christmas Faire, possibly in costume
9. Read through Shakespeare and go to a play
10. Learn to drive
11. Finish all those outlining and design projects I keep promising myself I'm going to finish
12. Stop being a nincompoop and actually figure out how the local bank works
BONUS: Start seeing a counselor

.-.  Somehow in all the other things I've been doing, a lot of little things have fallen through the cracks.  Also, yes, that's a lot of reading and writing, but it is stuff I need to finish and have just generally been putting off.  If I somehow experience a violent burst of motivation and finish too early, I'll add more--but finishing these 12 with everything else would feel pretty good.

How about you?

Other Games / Victory Garden Games
« on: December 20, 2013, 02:57:32 am »

Howdy, folks!  I'm here to present a new project, on behalf of myself and Solifuge--Victory Garden Games, our indie game dev team.

We're just starting out so we don't have too much to show yet, but we wanted to kick things off by letting Bay12 know about our project before anyone else.  Our hope is to make narrative-driven games with a warm, if occasionally horrifying, mood, driven by well-balanced and novel mechanics.  As far as creative influences go, Daisuke Amaya, Hideo Kojima, and Victor Hugo are pretty popular around here.  We're going to mix the best of East and West to make compelling stories that mesh with the underlying gameplay, as they fucking ought to.

For some examples of other work we've done separately, Solifuge helped implement the DF tileset Stonesense and ran a game called Blunderbuss; for an example of my writing, I'll direct you to my most recently completed Mafia game and an extremely snobby essay on Pacific Rim.

So far, we have Solifuge tackling graphics and gameplay design, and myself on writing and design.  The awesomely talented MagmaMcFry is programming our engine, and we're working with an accomplished sound engineer.  However, we're still looking for character designers and portrait artists; and, for select projects, we'll need voice actors and possibly animators or additional programmers as well.  Translators always welcome!  Please do feel free to refer talent to us if this sounds like you or if you know anyone else who might enjoy working with us!

We're posting project details here and developing a small game for mobile devices (codename: "Flower Chess"), but don't be a wallflower--come visit our shiny dev blog, where we're introducing members of our team!

Mafia / Iron Diadem, Night One: Things Said Behind Bars - [ABORTED]

This is a BYOR Kingmaker with a flavor twist.  The story continues from The Lonely Prince, but no prior knowledge of that game is necessary.

As this is a BYOR, you will be asked to PM a coat of arms to Webadict, Solifuge, and myself (Vector), from which your role will be constructed.  This consists of colors and symbols that would appear as part of your role's family heraldry (see here for more information than you could possibly want), from which Webadict will create your actions.  You don't need to make a picture--words are fine.

As this is a flavor-heavy game, you may also submit a short description of something you think would be cool for your character role.  Furthermore, you may submit flavor night actions if you wish, interact with characters during the day, whatever.  I will be using this information to craft a story.  You are, of course, portraying one of the dead queen's council.

Things you may want to keep in mind: 1. You may not play as any character from one of my previous games, though your character's story will likely be woven in with theirs; 2. I am pretty flexible, but if it flat-out does not fit the tone (example: spacecraft), I will find some way make it fit the tone (myth-and-legendish early 1500s Denmark with a thing for Shakespeare--whatever your challenge is, I accept it :I); 3. The themes of this game are Faith, Fate, and Governance; 4. You can find previous games linked in my sig, if you're curious about what they were like.

There will be a lot of flavor.  It's a BYOR!  Bring what YOU want.  It might just get tweaked a bit to fit the story :]

As Solifuge is a mensch, he will be making images of your coats of arms.  These, along with your role name, will be publicly visible throughout the game.  Please remember that character description and discussion of symbolism should be sent only to Webadict and myself.

As this is a Kingmaker, a single person will be selected as Kingmaker, who then selects someone to be King for a day.  Only the King has a vote, and once it is cast, that person is executed.  The king will be announced at the start of each day, and may or may not be on the side of town.

This game will be pretty complex.  I will not accept any raw beginners, but folks with little experience may still be accepted upon review.

For those familiar with The Lonely Prince, you may be interested to hear that the Princess Amendment is not in place.  However, I will still ask that you not be cruel to each other.

You are not in this game until all three people mentioned above--Vector, Webadict, and Solifuge--have received your role.

General rules:
   1. The execution must be in red and bold, and in this format: Execute Playername.  There is no unvoting--once cast, it is final.  If you are not the king, do not post in red.
   2. The day will last until an execution is decided, while Nights are at least 24 hours.  The night time span does not includes weekend, though I may end weekend-spanning nights after 24 hours if all night actions are in.
   3. Never edit your posts for any reason, including typos.
   4. Do not PM other players.  Players with private chat access will be given a topic on QuickTopic where they may post freely.
   5. Never quote any PM from the mod.  You may give a general summary (for example, a roleclaim), but do not quote directly.
   6. Please put my name in bold if you would like to get my attention.  This goes double for actions posted in a QuickTopic--I WILL IGNORE ANYTHING THAT IS NOT IN BOLD.
   7. A deadline will only be enforced if I deem that the game is stalled.  I will give a minimum of 36 hours notice if I enforce a deadline.  If there is no decision by the deadline, the king will be executed.
   8. Dead players may post one “bah post” to comment on their death, but it may not contain any relevant game information.  After that, dead men tell no tales, so please do not post.
   9. Please make an effort to post at least once daily.  If you do not post for 36 hours without reason, you will be prodded.  If I don’t hear from you within 24 more hours, you may be replaced (in particular: do not disappear if you are the king).  If you think someone needs a prod, please bring it to my attention--I can’t guarantee I will notice everyone who is not posting.
  10. There may be post restrictions.  These should not interfere with gameplay.
  11. I cannot answer questions about player's actions unless that player's actions are available to be seen. I cannot answer questions about your actions in-thread. I can, however, answer generic questions. I will simply ask you to rephrase the question, if I deem the question is bad.
  12. However, a lot of information on flavor will be publicly available.
  13. Short-term absences need to be stated before you become absent, or I will not be able to take them into account.
  14. If you can no longer post, you may Request Replacement. If there is anyone in the replacement queue that person will replace you. If not, you will remain in the game until this happens.
  15. Never underestimate your importance, have fun, and always play to win!

Game-specific rules:
The game will start on Night 0 with the thread locked.  Only the Kingmaker may act Night 0, though the scum may start talking in their scum chat.

Creative Projects / Fundamental Theorem of Osculation (Math Dating Sim)
« on: September 01, 2013, 11:42:46 pm »
I've been told I should do this, and Descan says he's A-OK with my taking the lead.

I'm going to try to use renpy to make some sort of dating sim in a bit, over the next few months.  The reason being, well, that Phoenix Wright philosophy game was pretty cool, right?  Maybe we could have a mathematician game!

I'm still not even at the point where I'm sure whether I want a female or male MC, but I'm rooting for a naive young person with a few routes (a little bit like the structure of Hatoful Boyfriend, maybe, though I could see it being more like Katawa-Shoujo; in any case, all fluff will be murdered with prejudice).  My expectation is that I'll be doing the writing, and if it looks like it's working well I may ask other people to help with music, art, etc.  Questions about moe-moe will be crowdsourced.  I know enough python and programming that I should be able to take care of that part on my own, however.

I'm not even sure what the framing device will be to explain why Our Hero(ine) is trying to date famous mathematicians, but at the moment I expect that:

a. Isaac Newton will be satisfying the tsundere/yandere position.
b. There will be at least one same-sex option and one opposite-sex option if I have to kill myself finding data on a female mathematician to put in.
c. G. H. Hardy is going to be in it.  It's happening.  He's a dick with HUGE amounts of gap moe, and it's happening.  I'll probably also add Ramanujan as a side character..
d. Erdos?  God knows he collaborated with a lot of people, but he's fairly recent. . . so I might feel bad about it.

If you have suggestions for the love list or things you want to see plot/theme-wise, please post here and let me know.

No, seriously, this is important: I need to learn how to draw.

However, I usually see the advice to "just go draw things."  This is not what I want to do, since I have done that for a great many years and the results have been... not fabulous.  I am pretty convinced, at this point, that I just don't see things the right way.  So--does anyone have a more systematic suggestion, where we learn in terms of simple cumulative exercises or something and it's more clear as to what we're going for at each step?  I don't have a problem with imagination, I've got a problem with technical skills, and "just go and flail around" really doesn't help that much with those.

And it doesn't help much to just be told "draw something and we'll criticize the snot out of you," since I know I'm not very good artist, and being told "look at how WRONG you are and how much BETTER my stuff is, just imitate what you like" has never done much for me.  I have tried it more than a couple of times, though.

So.  Tl; dr: does anyone have access to resources that teach drawing in the same way that one teaches math, music, or programming?

Mafia / The Lonely Prince: He Who Shall Serve
« on: July 08, 2013, 09:53:16 pm »
The Lonely Prince

Once upon a time, a lonely prince who had thought he had everything, satin and samite and rubies and pearls, found that he longed for something that exceeded their value.  That is to say--a paramour, whose pureness of heart and clarity of mind would be as a lily in the midsts of the evil he had known.  So he drew to him thirteen women whose beauty was apparent in their every gesture; so he drew to him these thirteen, in whom he saw virtue and honor.

Once upon a time, a lonely prince thought himself somewhat more grand than he was and mistook his distaste for evil as an understanding of it.  He drew to him thirteen beauties differently made, to choose from them and make one his wife.  But among them the clever ones deduced that he had drawn in some interlopers, who arrived not for love but for fame and fortune.  And among them the kind ones convinced the thirteen that something had to be done, for the sake of the prince; and among them the bold ones decided that, one by one, they would root out the evil from this bundle of thirteen roses, and send those rivals away.

Unfortunately the evildoers within this fine bouquet had both sharp hairpins aplenty and a taste for desperation, so it must be said that some of the thirteen met bloody ends.

Once upon a time a month and a day later, a prince walked into a bar...

This game is a mild bastard mod.  That is to say, I have already lied to you once or twice.  However, I give to you my promises.  Not only will the rules be as static as possible, but any lies I tell will be truths from the perspective of our storytelling prince.  Indeed, they will be solely in the flavor; none of them will be whoppers, only minor details.  I also promise you that there will be hidden mechanics.  Discovering them will be in your best interest, but the game can be finished successfully for all concerned without them.

Because of the complexity of this game and my relative newness as a mod I will not accept any raw beginners.  Those who have finished a BM and two other games will be automatically accepted; others may or may not be accepted upon review.

Please also note that in this game there is a 3-strike enforced politeness rule in place.  That is to say, don't ruin the game for others through cursing and vitriol.  On the first strike I will give a warning.  On the second, I will take away your vote for the day.  On the third, you will be modkilled.  You are proto-princesses, and if you prove yourself unsuitable, the prince will ask you to leave.  I am not kidding about this.

I am not going to be a hardass, but Great Temple conditions will not be happening again.

Game Rules (mostly thanks to LNCP--there are some changes, so read it):
  • It will be trusted, on behalf of both the players and the mod, that you will play according to the restrictions (if any) given and that you will play both respectfully and to fulfill your win condition to the best of your abilities.
  • All votes must be in red and bold for legibility. Unvoting before voting again is not required, but appreciated. You may vote for No Lynch. You cannot conditional vote. In case of a tie, no one will be lynched. The game has soft hammers; if at any point a player has 51% of all available votes, that player will be lynched and the day will end.
  • Days and Nights both span 72 hours.  Neither time span includes weekends. Nights may end earlier if all actions are in before the deadline. Due to my work hours and the flavor-heavy nature of this game, most days will end at 7PM Pacific (5 AM GMT) but will be processed to completion a couple of hours later.
  • Never edit your posts for any reason, including typos.
  • Do not PM other players unless explicitly allowed.  Players with private chat access will be given a topic on QuickTopic where they may post freely.
  • Never quote any PM from the mod or any communication with them unless explicitly allowed.  You may give a general summary (for example, a roleclaim), but do not quote directly. Rulebreakers can and will be modkilled with prejudice.
  • Any requests to the moderator not in bold will be ignored.
  • Dead players may post one “bah post” to comment on their death, but it may not contain any relevant game information.  After that, please do not post.
  • You may ask for an extension or shorten by putting the respective word in bold.  Extensions require 33% of players to agree minus any players opposing, and requires at least three players. Extends are for 48 hours including weekends, and there may only be a maximum of four Extends.
  • Shortens require at least 51% of players to agree, and will end the day immediately, even if I cannot process them right away.
  • Please make an effort to post at least once daily.  If you do not post content (that is, nothing along the lines of “placeholder post”, "this is a post" or "I will post later") for 48 hours, you will be given a warning.  If I don’t hear from you within 24 more hours, you will be replaced or modkilled. Your third warning will be your last. Should you not post content for a further 24 hours from the third warning, you will be modkilled. If you manage to be inactive for more than 48 hours after this, you will be modkilled without warning. See also rule 12. This includes weekends.
  • If you do not post content for an entire day (72 hours minimum) you will be modkilled at the end of the day. The Day is quite long enough; there are no excuses for flaking.
  • Short-term absences need to be stated before you become absent, or I will not be able to take them into account. If you’ll be gone for a longer time, you can either PM me about it and I’ll try to accomodate, or request a replacement as below.
  • If you can no longer post, you may Request Replacement. If there is anyone in the replacement queue that person will replace you. If not, you will remain in the game until this happens even if you won't be prodded - please endeavour to post regardless.
  • Never underestimate your importance, and always play to win!
PRINCESS AMENDMENT: Keep the vitriol out of this game.  It's fine to be aggressive, but keep the hard-core insults out of here.  On first infraction, I will give you a warning.  On the second, I will take away your vote for the day.  On the third, you will be mod-killed.

Welcome to the forum's current compendium of useful links!

Mafia: A Useful Tutorial
If you're new to the forum or struggling to understand the basic rules, come over here and take a gander.

Games Threshold Discussion and List
We keep track of all games currently running, planned, and in signups here.  If you want to run a game, please come by and let us know.  The same goes for if you're really sick of/would like to see some gametype, or if you think more games need to go into signups because you can't find anything to play.

Notable Games Archive
A list with links to all the best games that have appeared on this forum, whether for scum gambits, town play, flavor, or amazing modding.  If you've just finished something amazing, come let me know so I can put it up!  Similarly, if you're a newbie trying to find out how we do things here, this is the best place to start.  You can find out the ways in which everything goes horribly wrong later.

Mafia Gametypes
If you have a great modding idea but are not sure about how you'll pull it off, come here to talk it over.  It's also the right place to find people who can help you balance setups.

The Web LurkerTracker
A modification of the utility invented by Zathras, modified and polished by our very own Think0028, then worked over by ZombieUrist.  The perl script tracks all of the posts a player has made throughout the game, and suggests which players should be prodded.  More streamlining is always great, though, so if you have any suggestions, just come by and give us a holler!

Should any element of this thread become outdated in the future, shoot me a PM and I'll take care of it.

Mafia / The State of the Subforum
« on: June 30, 2013, 09:49:40 pm »
Okay, dudes.  This week it's actually going to happen.  I'm going to update the Notable Games Archive.  I have two days off work, and at least two hours of one of those days is going to be devoted to this subforum.

When I got to thinking about that, though, I started realizing that we could get some other work done at the same time.  What do you guys think?  Do we need a new system here, or is everything else working pretty well?  What things would make it easier for you to play games the way you want to?

General Discussion / Happy Media
« on: June 13, 2013, 10:11:24 pm »
Yeah, that's right.  You heard me.  Vector calls for happy crap.

I want a list of stuff you've seen or read or played recently that is both heartwarming and positive, but which earns the right to be so despite legitimately steep odds.  So basically: idealistic main character in a crapsack world.  The world may be more or less crapsack, but the lead must be idealistic not because they are made that way, or because everything keeps going right for them, but because they choose to be.  There must be a legitimate acknowledgement of difficulty.  I'm not looking for saccharine, I'm looking for strong.

Or, perhaps, simply media where the world is rough on people and they haven't all flattened out into growly emotionless or angry/frightened people.

Life Advice / Time Estimation
« on: March 11, 2013, 12:57:05 pm »
I noticed that I have a chronic problem with having trouble estimating the amount of time something will take, and therefore cannot schedule to save my life.  This leads to a lot of making plans and backing out, whereas previously I simply wouldn't make plans at all and ended up miserable and alone.

How do you guys deal with this issue?  Do you know how I can learn to do a better job of this?
