Life Advice / Onion "issue."
« on: February 01, 2011, 11:31:04 pm »
This evening, I was cutting open an onion when it spewed a milky substance all over my hand--thin, a bit grayish, and not at all sticky.  Maybe a teaspoon of it.  Subsequent cuts did nothing.

Can anyone explain this?  Are onions that do this more or less nutritious?  Is it an indicator of freshness?

Thanks.

Life Advice / On Compromise
« on: January 11, 2011, 10:04:30 pm »
As those of you who are familiar with me may know, I'm not very good at compromising when it comes to my self-conduct and beliefs.

I suppose the reason why I'm starting this thread is that I'm wondering about other people's feelings on compromising/selling out, whether it's in terms of appearance or anything else.  So, I suppose I want to know: how do you feel about it, and where do you think the line should be drawn?  Do you feel toeing the line for mainstream behavior is worth it?

As for the specific reason for my query:

Folks have been telling me that I'd probably get farther in life if I tried to be attractive, rather than simply dressing to please myself.  I don't think it should be necessary to flash skin or cut my (stupidly curly) hair to succeed.

And before anyone asks, I'm mostly wearing button-down blouses, shined leather boots, and skirts (or black pants) nowadays, maybe with a light sweater or vest.  It's old-fashioned and maybe a little bit austere, but I wouldn't say it's weird... with my build, there's no point in wearing tank tops, anyway.  And yes, I make sure everything matches, is clean without being weird about it, blah blah.  I'm even getting new glasses so I don't have the weird old coke-bottle ones.  I'm trying, guys!

My personal feeling on this matter is that persistent earnestness, honesty, cleverness, and compassion should override whatever might be gained with a trendy haircut and cute shoes.  I think that I'm well-liked enough.  I have friends and three housing options for next year lined up, and my roommates are trying to set me up on dates.  My professors seem to love me and find me extremely memorable; people talk to me because I look odd but approachable; and nowadays, everyone seems to come to me first when they're missing some sort of information.  I even get along with all my relatives, and folks who I used to be completely unable to stand.

Those all seem like indicators of social success, despite looking like I crawled out of some sort of Victoriania catalog.

But, if you have any advice or interesting stories on this matter, I would love to hear about it.

Also, let's not get all wanky and-or flamey on here.  Yeah, I'm a girl on the internet.  I'm asking for advice about personal appearance, and what I'm looking for is honest opinions, not boot-licking.  You've been warned.

General Discussion / Music (and other stuff) in Russian, Polish, or German
« on: December 02, 2010, 07:15:41 pm »
I am looking for music with lyrics in Russian, Polish, or German.  Discernible pronunciation is preferred, so don't give me opera or screaming metal, please.  Shmoopy is fine.  Militaristic is mostly fine--I don't want to get in trouble for singing/humming the wrong country's national anthem in the wrong place.

As for why, I need to start training my ear if I want to have any hope of learning these languages in the next few years.

Thanks much~

Sidenote: I'm also looking for interesting novels/TV shows/other resources in these three languages, so if you know of any, please feel free to derail away.  If you think this belongs in Life Advice I can put it there, but I'd prefer not to for obvious reasons.

General Discussion / Bay12 Book Club
« on: September 27, 2010, 04:03:08 pm »
Given the throngs of fine literary folk who frequent this forum, I thought it might be fun to start a book club.

How we're going to do this still needs to be worked out, but I figured we should get a list of books people might want to read and discuss as a group, and then decide from there how long we want to give it before we start talking.

Alternatively, we could just talk about whatever we're reading in general, without necessarily using the "group" format.

Mafia / Notable Games Archive
« on: August 19, 2010, 04:00:31 pm »
This is the notable games archive, where we keep all of Bay12's best rounds of Mafia.  Since the forum is pretty old, there's a lot of great games here.  If you're a newbie, you should probably start with the Vanilla games, though everything else is awesome, too.

If you've just finished playing, reading, or running a particularly excellent game, come by and let me know!  This is the place to squawk about it for future generations of mafia players.

Mafia / So, I'm thinking about running something flavorful in a while
« on: August 07, 2010, 01:33:40 pm »
Since I'm pretty near to finishing off the flavortext for BMIX and I felt like running another game, I'm opening up a poll.

Which one of these games do you think I should run?  I'm putting Prism on hold for a while, since I really need to work out the mechanics and I don't exactly consider myself the most reliable of mods at the moment.  I warn you that anything I run is probably going to be rather slow, as well as small.  That is, expect the default day run to be on the long side.  Nights will last a couple of days.  This is because I'm also going to be telling a story, as well as running a game.

Also, please don't vote option 6 just to be funny.  It is not appreciated :I

Life Advice / ... Think I should get contacts?
« on: July 27, 2010, 03:30:39 pm »
In which Vector hopes the anonymity of the internet will be able to get her some honest advice.  As a girl with fairly thick glasses, the subject tends to come up with some frequency: should I run off and try to look slightly more mainstream/less dorktacular?  If it helps, I've had these suckers since I was five years old, so I'm fairly accustomed to them.  Another note is that my eyesight has effectively stabilized, so it's not like I'd be using contacts to stop degeneration at this point.

Well, anyway.  First off, two photographs:

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Perceived pros:
  • Might look less like a librarian
  • My glasses are quite thick, which can be a turnoff to some people
  • Looking more mainstream might make me more approachable
  • A change of pace might be good
  • I'm planning on taking a couple of drama classes, and glasses don't really help appearance flexibility
  • I have good medical insurance, so trying them doesn't represent a large financial burden

Apparent cons:
  • I hate sticking things in my eyes
  • Personal comfort with the familiar
  • Looking more mainstream will probably make it harder to get along with the math department (no joke)
  • I look like a librarian because I feel like a librarian
  • I enjoy the distance an unorthodox appearance creates between myself and others

So, a couple of questions: do you think glasses really change your perception of an individual?  I find myself somewhat biased towards those who do wear glasses, though I know that's mostly a silly habit.

That said, people do have preferences... so, what do you say?  Contacts?  No contacts?  Stop worrying about inanities and get back to studying?

Thanks, as always, for the help.

Life Advice / Mathematical Anxiety
« on: April 20, 2010, 10:04:47 pm »
So.  I'm a bit of a math nerd, as I'm sure many of you know.  I like to think that I'm pretty good at it.  The problem is that I'm absolutely petrified of mathematics and have very little confidence in my abilities, though I have greatly improved of late.

The question is this: do you have any ideas on what one might do to reduce anxiety with respect to this particular problem?  For reference, I'm a pure math student in college and hoping to become a mathematician, so it's not like I can just ignore it until it goes away.  Furthermore, I have a solid 8.5 months until I need to return to school and do this for grades again, so I've got a bit of time.

Suggestions, anyone?

Mafia / With apologies to all
« on: March 11, 2010, 09:02:44 pm »
I'm going to request replacements in all the games I'm in that do not currently appear to be lyloing (I//S//E and iPick, to be precise).  I'll mod BMIX to the end, of course, and I feel it would be rather irresponsible to ditch BYOR3 at this late date.  I will try to continue playing until replacements can be found, but unfortunately I really have very little time, as is outlined below.

The reasons for this sudden change of heart are twofold: first off, I'm not really having fun; second off, any time spent doing things that aren't math is time spent being extremely anxious.  This includes "time spent walking places" and "time spent eating" (though I seem to be sleeping all right for now), so naturally it includes "time spent playing Mafia."  I'm sure you've noticed that I've seemed a bit more distracted and lurky of late.

I have certain suspicions that the first reason is related to the second.  I don't really know what's happening with me, but I'm really sick of this constant paranoia and fear--so I'm doing what comes naturally and studying until I'm not at all frightened, even if I don't know whether or not such a day will ever come.  Don't know what else I can do, but hopefully something will occur to me.

Well, anyway.  See you around, and hopefully we'll meet under better circumstances in the future.

Life Advice / Food for the perpetually hungry
« on: February 24, 2010, 12:42:40 am »
I discovered that I'm about to increase my daily burned calories by 1176 kcal (already have increased it 800kcal, and rising every day).  So.  What do I eat so I can stop feeling like I'm about to die every three hours or so?

For reference, that's roughly doubling what I normally burn.  Additionally, I'm a vegetarian.

Mafia / Ex Cathedra [BMIX]: Sunrise
« on: February 13, 2010, 07:25:10 pm »
Ex Cathedra

The Rules:

You may PM only to me, the ICs, or from one mafia member to another.  Further, all discussion about this game, even indirectly, can only occur in this thread.

All votes must be colored red.  To avoid confusion, only use that color when you are voting for someone.  You must also Unvote before you vote for another.  If you do NOT unvote, your new vote will NOT count.  No Lynch votes are allowed.

"Days" will last 48 hours.  Nights will last 24 hours or until all night abilities have been sent to me.  The deadline will be posted regularly and I retain the ability to hurry the deadline for inactivity or extend the deadline if enough request it.  Any deadline that falls on a weekend will be pushed back to the following Monday.  Note that you may request to extend or shorten the day.

Upon deadline, the player with the most votes will be lynched.  If there is a tie, there will be no lynch.  Once dead, you may not speak or PM anyone about the game, living or otherwise.  A Dead chat will be made available.  Mafia will be given their own Chat to speak to one another once roles have been sent.

Bolded sentences can be used to catch my attention, or that of the ICs.  Italics used by me is story text, or "flavor" as they call it, and is just there to be interesting.  Note you are free to apply flavor as you wish.  Note that the flavor has nothing to do with the actual gameplay and can be ignored if desired.

Do NOT quote my PM text and do NOT edit your posts (you can double post if you need to)

Lastly, any suggestion of breaking a rule in the main chat will be treated as the rule already broken.  If you have any questions or wish to make sure of the legality of an action, PM me first.

You can, of course, ask any questions you may have.

Mafia / Open Games, Replacements, and Useful Threads
« on: January 09, 2010, 03:32:47 am »
Welcome to the Signboard

If you want to see which games are open and which games require replacements, go to the most recent post.

If you're looking for useful threads, those are in the post after this one.

If you think this system is broken and I need to be yelled at, or that your thread is particularly noteworthy, shoot me a PM.  I may not get to you for a week or two, but I'll get on it eventually.  Promise.

Mods

Since I'm currently off to drown myself in the math palace, you guys are going to have to maintain this yourselves.  Here's how it works:

Copy the contents of the last post made and modify it to include your game/alter your game's details and signup numbers/whatever.

Spoiler: Format (click to show/hide)

Once your game has filled or you've gotten that replacement, come back to remove it.  If no games are open or need replacements, write that in bold--"No games are open at this time."  I'm sure you can figure it out.

This thread is not for bickering or discussion.

I know it's tempting, but don't do it.  Just because I am largely absent does not mean that I am not capable of wrath.

If you have questions about the game or want to offer to replace, post in the mod's thread or PM the mod.

Mafia / Discussion: Mafia Subforum Policies
« on: September 21, 2009, 05:11:30 pm »
So, I don't know if y'all have been paying attention to the arguments over at the end of Kingmaker, but it has become evident that the DF forums are currently having a few problems with flakers and dying interest in games.  It seems that this may be mainly due to poorly matched supply and demand; that is, the supply is too high at the moment.

As such, I would like to make a proposal.

1. That there be some games which are always run as long as mods for them exist.
     a. Paranormal, because it seems to be an expert game everyone enjoys
     b. Beginner's, because it is good for Mafia to be accessible and to have a game for learners

2. That some number of serial games be placed on rotation
     a. Examples include Vote, Toon, and Weirdo Mafia
     b. Suggest that only two games be run at a time
     c. A thread shall be constructed with polls to vote for the next game to go up as various games end

3. That some number of new games be placed on rotation
     a. Examples include Quantum, Systematically Make Others Lose, and Ridiculous Mafia
     b. Suggest that only one or two games be run at a time, for a sum of 16 players or so
             i. Test games should probably be smaller, in most cases
     c. A second thread shall be constructed with polls to vote for the next game to go up as various games end

4. That flakers be banned for some period of time
     a. In most cases, for the next game run
     b. Examples of flaking, as opposed to typical lurking, are:
         Jack_Bread in Weirdo Mafia I
Org, in the last little bit
         Myself in Paranormal 9

5. That replacements become more of a solid institution
     a. If a game is over-filled, the additional players be automatic replacements should someone flake
     b. The Mafia subforum gains its own replacement thread

In summary:

We limit the number of games played at a given time
We ban flakers for a short time, and longer if they persist after a cluster of bans
We try to keep games on the small side, so people can't lurk/flake as easily
We take overflow players as replacements, should players be persistently inactive
We create a Mafia-Subforum replacement thread

Opinions?
