Did your pump operators gain enough of those attributes by Legendary to show a difference on the "Thoughts and Preferences" screen?

I just ran a rough experiment with a dwarf who was a Proficient Dodger and a Proficient Teacher (set at embark), but no other skills. The only physical attributes that were displayed were "quick to tire" and "flimsy." I set him to mine until he became Legendary (took around 9 months), and checked his attributes again.

Result was exactly the same as his starting condition: "quick to tire" and "flimsy."

I didn't check any raw numbers with DT, etc.

Attribute gain seems fairly irrelevant if that much training isn't even enough to bump a dwarf up a single "tier" in the relevant attributes.

They're very light, which is nice because it'll make your military dwarves be able to move a little faster. The low weight also means that they'll do almost no damage if a dwarf uses it to bash an enemy.

An adamantine shield won't block attacks any better or worse than any other material (wood, leather, steel ... doesn't matter), so it's probably a good choice to save it for edged weapons, or for armor.

I've never seen anything like this, lol.

Pretty sure it has nothing to do with turkeys, or with cats adopting dwarfs.

Did the bug swarm stay after you played for a few minutes?

What's the average fish population per biome?

If you embarked at the intersection of multiple ocean biomes, and multiple land biomes that all had rivers or pools, would this be enough fish to supply a modestly-sized fort for a couple dozen years?

I don't remember there being contaminants in 40d at all.

A bathtub trench that you can flush fresh water through works to remove contaminants in the current version?

Dwarves get a bad thought ("Slept without a proper room recently ") for sleeping in a bed that isn't designated as a room.

Aha. I had assumed that thought was only about not having a personal bedroom.

It would make more sense if the water acted like a 'cap' and sealed the top if the whole thing was encased at the same time.

If part of the magma that hits the water is adjacent to a supporting structure (like a wall of the pit/cistern/pond/whatever), I do believe that it will support an obsidian "cap" like that. I haven't tested personally, though.

This thread reminds me of a question I've had:

What's the point of designating a room as a dormitory? This doesn't seem to add any special functions, since dwarves will still snooze in the barracks, hospital, or anywhere else there happens to be an unclaimed bed.

Yeah I sorta guessed that, would it work if say you had 6z levels completely full of water with gobbos at the bottom, then put magma on the top, so that the obsidian floats down and crushes the gobbos?

That should work (if the goblins don't down first). The obsidian won't "float" down, though, it'll crash down in a single instant. [Edit: Ninjaed!]

You'll also end up with a pile of natural obsidian at the bottom of the pit/lake/cistern/whatever, so you'll need to be able to drain the water and mine it away, or else your trap will eventually fill up with obsidian.

Considering that almost all of my immigrants have multiple goblin and troll kills, and that a high percentage of them also have elf and dwarf kills (and aren't vampires), it appears that the goblins are in the middle of an ultra-intensive humanitarian effort to give a better life to the next generation of dwarves, and that the recipients of this effort are both numerous and enthusiastically grateful.

In various version of DF2012, I've had goblin snatchers successfully steal babies twice. On neither occasion did a parent of the baby seem to acquire a bad thought because of this event. Interestingly, I was still able to see the thoughts of the missing babies via the "relationships" screen of a parent, and on both occasions the baby was "happy to be free!"

Working as intended?

I don't think you can remove them. However, you can smooth the stone layers, add some constructions, and make it into some kind of monument.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Jails: Need a room for each restraint?
« on: April 01, 2012, 11:11:16 am »
If you carve out a room, build three chains, and [q] one of the chains to make the entire room a jail, are all three chains available for justice, or just the one you used to assign the jail? The language on the wiki and in posts I searched up is ambiguous.

Edit: Accidentally bolded half of post.

Even without the constructed wall in place, without a ramp or an upstair on the bottom level he shouldn't have been able to walk down there at all. (correct?)

Maybe he fell down the stairs, and some physics quirk squirted him over there? It might explain the dropped grate, at least.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cleaning Patients with Stagnant Water!?
« on: March 26, 2012, 11:46:46 am »
My dwarves are also using a stagnant murky pool for cleaning patients, instead of going to the water source by a clean river (with "zone only drinking" enabled).

The first patient was washed with stagnant water and treated (stitches, bandaging) before we had soap, and she didn't get infected, despite being "quite susceptible to disease."

The second patient was washed with stagnant water and soap; also no infection.
