DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Magma Faring Dwarf
« on: November 20, 2009, 06:01:18 pm »
Today, while mining for obsidian I accidentally mined one tile too many and opened up a flow of magma. I sealed off the area, but the erroneous dwarf was left to burn.

Unfortunately he didn't. He just stood around and would not take on any job, seeming to wander through the magma, but never directly into the pipe.

Nearly a season later, I get a message: "Urist, Miner has Drowned" He may have been Superdwarvenly tough, but I didnt think he could just take the magma...

Does a built cistern hold water better than the murky pools? Because I just picked one and tried to make them fill it, and not much happened.

I have settled myself on a map and have been doing pretty well in the first few days. The map is pretty nice with everything I could want, except for a river, or other constant source of fresh water.

Pools fill up in the spring, but almost never fill more than 3 depth, and they are pretty hard to capture any fresh for the rest of the year.

What is the best way to secure this water just in case I would need it anytime during the future, preferably in large-ish quantities.

I get no odd mesages. Just one that says "A migrant has arrived this year".
And often enough (I swear) its not my fault that the elves die. I just dont often do anything about it.

I checked my init, and thats definitly not it. Plus, I have a changing population, I just never get more than one or two migrants, and often lose maybe one or two people a year, so I am not really gaining population.

I keep producing artifacts, as well as lots of metal and glass products, so I know I am making lots of wealth. Could that one or two deaths be the problem? Oh, and the elves have never left alive. I think that should actually attract migrants.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Population?
« on: April 26, 2009, 06:56:09 pm »
There seems to be something wrong with my immigration, but I cannot figure out what. I checked the wiki, and there might just be a glitch. I have been hovering just over 50 dwarfs for more than 2 years, and have not had more than 2 immigrants come at any given time. I have over 1 million created wealth, and it just keeps getting higher at a faster rate. I have never lost that many dwarfs, maybe 10 total.

Whats up with that? And is it possible to bypass the population requriements fo some of the nobles?

Oaken Crown:
On this object is an image of Pinehushed the cougar and Akik Campendenever the Fortuitous Deer deer of  Poking the human in Oak.
Pinehused is cringing.
Akik Campendenever the Fortuitous Deer deer of  Poking is laughing.
The artwork relates to the ripping of the cougar Pinehused's left rear paw by the human Akik Campendenever the Fortuitous Deer deer of  Poking in 58.

I flooded fortress after fortress, because my floodgates wouldnt hold back magma. I couldnt figure it out. And then, suddenly, I was thinking that magma floodgates should have to have obsidian mechanisms. Oh yeah, they do have to.... duh.

I have had this idea for a while, but I'm not sure how to do it. Or if it would even work.

Moving logs from one place to another, lumberjack style. Floating them down a river, or at least flooding the land they are on so that they move with the water.
I'm almost positive it wont work, but it would be pretty nice.

I think it was the low level of water, but alas, I save scummed my way around that and into much more trouble.

I wanted magma, because its fun, and there was a shitload of hematite around. and the best concievable way was to go through a magma fall. I'm still not quite sure why happed, but magma started to overflow into my fortress. Unluckily, this happened to cut off my bauxite room, and had no steel yet, so I was screwed. But, I took the dwarfy way out, and made an escape tunnel. (Oh, at the time I was being seiged by gobbos)
My dwarves loved to party, more than I knew they could, and so I built destroyed all my tables and statues, and built one meeting hall table at the end of the tunnel to the 'safe room'. Naturally, everyone went right away as I let the goblins in. They spent enough time killing one kid (no one cares about them anyway) that they all burned alive. Or were sent running.

I abandoned, as I would eventually burn myself, and didnt feel like waiting.

You drew that? Thats incredible! Given the time this has been up, at least.

And to OP, can we include underground jails/holding cells for some of the more unsavory parts of the arena?

So, I dont want to flood this board with all my new threads, so I will just post my question here, how deadly are magma falls?

And how can I get my miner to run away from the magma faster?

But he is certainly nerdy enough for it. He's on the same level that I am, but has never tried this, thats about the only difference.

Besides, mass child tombs dont take up any space if built on a retractable bridge.

All while training lower level masons/carpenters quickly.

[fake edit] I realized soon that you cant build on a bridge. But it would have been a good thought.
