DF Gameplay Questions / magma powered industry
« on: August 04, 2009, 11:21:12 am »
Do magma powered furnaces and workshops deplete magma underneath? Like well does with water?

I am planing to make small artificial magma pool inside my fort that I do not want replenish. Will my industry run out of power source?

Thank you for anwers.

And it is 6x6 I see - can it be smaller and still have the same features?

A good character set helps a lot with this.

If you look at one of my kings chambers you can see the difference between engraved and non-engraved walls. The engraved walls have a white dotted outline and the engraved floors have a single white dot in the center.

The problem I have with a lot of sets is that the designers come up with really nice single tiles for floors and such, but it winds up being WAY too busy when you have hundreds of them. The tiles that will cover huge expanses (floors, walls, stockpiles, etc) need to be very subtle or else the objects in the foreground get lost.

What tileset is that?

... If you've got a bottomless bit it could become a hole in the ozone layer n_n

I have cca 4x4 pit that came with underground river

My dwarves now have very basic acommodation and I am spending lots and lots of time by designating what should have been mined. Will post to dfma soon (hopefuly).

You could always mimic the river directly below itself with glass floors (can you make glass floors?) and walls then open the river up to the glass area.  While it's filling, build pumps on the exit end with 1 water wheel to pump the water out of the map... just for kicks.  ;D

Man, that is in the plan from the very begining.

I had to abandon - I forgot the underground river for tower cap farm.

Oh, you are right... it was stupid mistake of me.

And there even is a small test: 2^6=64, 2^7=128.

No, for lakes I will use real water in clear glass containers.

Edit: I just embarked in nice 3x3 area and designated some work. Right now I am browsing dfma and looking for some inspirating design. I am pretty confident, only few problems could be carp infestation (Jeez, so many carps! Almost carpsplosion) and few imps in pipe.

Simply have two levels of sand. Collapse the bottommost sand layer onto the bottom of the map, and you can use it whenever.

Thank you, this is a great idea.

I've also finally found a way how install a well and not have water container "above" the well. I will make the sky from water and not microcline. So my dwarves will get their water from "sky".

Damn, you are right! You should lose in 2% of cases.

I'm curious where you get 2% loss. My best determination so far is that you will loose on 47 possible numbers (as they will require 7 tries to reach). This is based on halving the possible numbers each time (note this is regardless of rounding or tossing out decimal part). So you'd start at 50, then subtract or add 25, then 12, 6,3,1 based on what they tell you.

I followed the same principle. If you divide interval into 2 halves or almost halves and then choose the worse one as the correct one and do this 5x times, you will end with 3 numbers. If you follow every other way you will end with one number. Therefore 2%. I may have made some mistakes of course.

The guess the number 1-100 in 6 tries?
Technically, it isn't possible to win it in 6 tries every single time. If it were 7 guesses, then it would always be possible.

Damn, you are right! You should lose in 2% of cases.

You need to be carrying 250 req I think.

This is a good idea. If you are playing carefully, I suggest carrying several thousands when fighting in jungle. There is one impropable event with a bet that can be won every single time.

You could use the bottom layer of the magma pipe as a sun and then cover the rest of the bottom level with a microline floor to represent a blue sky with alunite clouds.

You should also build wooden supports and pillars on the "surface" to represent a forest.

This is a fun idea.

Magma pipe would have to be capped, because I see no way how to safely remove the almost bottom layer without burning my dwarves.

I was also thinking about 3x3. Just for the fun I have already mined out world once in 2x2. It was surprisingly easy. Maybe I'll have to cheat a little when finding a site, because it tends to place a magma pipe just where want to build something and ruins my design.

Yes, there must be a small opening at ground level for traders, however they will be immidiately led down. Also I will need some glass so I must be carefull to leave some sand or to prepare a lot of glass before casting obsidian over sand areas.
Dig out a ring at the lowest level around the pipe, then channel out a hole from above.  The magma will fill in what you dug out.  Repeat until the whole level is full, then destroy the pipe, place floors linked to the fort to channel out the remaining obsidian around the pipe.

This may not be necesiarly possible. Nevermind, capping and mining it should do the trick.

Jeez, even on rank 2 the game is much harder at the end.  I got my weapon buff too early and it's not healing me anymore, and I've somehow managed to get Caroline from near-full HP to death in the space of one fight twice now.  I'm losing req each day instead of making it.  Wouldn't be a problem if I hadn't spent all my cash on a shiny hat (though I do look rather dashing in it).  I've tried to face the Imp Drive a bunch of times already (by which I mean people forced me to face it or it found me while traveling and attacked), and got absolutely destroyed every time.  Without some kind of huge boost, like from the Pan-Galactic Gargle Blaster, I don't know if it's even possible.  It's going to be a long time before I can start again...

The lesson: don't spend all your money on a new hat when there are other things you are gonna need!

grenades can do much
