Not sure if these are considered extravagant, but meh, here goes:

http://www.mkv25.net/dfma/map-4689-roomtyphoons

I'm pretty proud over this fortress, even though it's still a work in progress.

I like building around the landscape, not altering it overly much, the only thing I've changed more than a few tiles is the bridge level, but it had a level shaped roughly like that from the beginning. Four of the eight towers along the walls are done, the four remaining need a roof and their last level done.

No goblin has ever gotten past the silver bridge over the botomless pit  ;D

I'm pretty proud over this fortress, even though it's still a work in progress.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Is There A Way To Find World Seeds?
« on: February 19, 2009, 10:14:26 am »
There is a way. When you export local maps (ESC -> export local image) it will give you BMP files of your fortress and and a few .txt files. One of the .txt files will contain your worldgen parameters, including the seed.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Up stairs

You could always build a wall below the upstairs.

I could, but it wouldn't look very good, and I want it to look good.  :D

I'm a hollow glass island to be suspended in the artificial lake I'm building.

You are!? Well thats super.  :)

Now, to the critical point, will up stairs on the lowest level also act as floors, or will they let water through from the bottom? If they do, the whole thing will flood, and since you can't build stairs on constructed floors, ther's no other way.

Please tell me they work as floors  :-\

Not 100% sure I understand how you're constructing this. Do you maybe have some pics or a diagram?

 I accidentally the whole word constructed!  :o

Anyway, here's a rough diagram:

Code: [Select]
_________
W    | X |    W
W    | X |    W
W    |_U_|    W
W             W
W_____________W

W = lake wall
| = 'island' wall
_ = floor
U = up stair
X = up/down stair

The plan is to have water around the 'island', but if the up stairs at the bottom allow water to pass through from underneath it will be flooded due to water pressure.

Hope that's clearer.

I'm a hollow glass island to be suspended in the artificial lake I'm building. The 'island' is 2 z-levels high, which makes me have to use stairs.

Now, to the critical point, will up stairs on the lowest level also act as floors, or will they let water through from the bottom? If they do, the whole thing will flood, and since you can't build stairs on constructed floors, ther's no other way.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Amazing war stories.
« on: February 18, 2009, 11:05:12 am »
another epic event was when i decided to start cross training my first ever military of crosbowmen with hammers. my captain of the guard picked up a steel hammer, and promptly belted his sparring partners liver out, across the room, out of the fortifications and down one z level into my dining room. his thoughts about it were "has had a satisfying sparring session lately, has taken joy in slaughter, has recently lost a friend to tragedy."

 :o  ;D

I don't really have any great military stories, since most of all sieges is dealt with by crossdowdwarves shooting from fortifications and a retracting bridge over a bottomless pit.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Pumping fish?

Great, thank you everyone.

As a sidenote, I don't get any carp, only lungfish in (and outside of) my brook  :P

I'm thinking of creating an artificial lake on a empty plateau in my fortress. The site is a few Z-levels over the brook.

So my question is; will the lake have fish in it if I pump water froom the brook to fill it?

They couldn't fly back when they made those...

They had aliens do that for them, don't you read the conspiracy theories? (or watch the latest Indiana Jones movie, for that matter)

 ::)

Also; dwarves can fly. Bridge + dwarf + connected lever = flying dwarf  ;D

Not my map, but this is one that struck me when i saw it ages ago, and i remembered it reading this thread.

http://mkv25.net/dfma/poi-7740-mapchamber

Edit, wait, no... That's not the map i remember, that's just one i found searching for map in POI titles.

This is the map i remember

Maps! Why didn't I think of that? I'm totally gonna steal this idea!

Hmm... I wonder how hard it would be to build a 3d map...

These: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Color are the colours in vanilla DF.

You can see other possible colour palettes here: http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Color_schemes. You can also mod your own (the second link has info on that), but DF only supports 16 colours currently.

Good luck with the mural, be sure to post links when you're done  ;D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Dwarf children ages
« on: February 06, 2009, 03:58:45 am »
Wouldn't that happen if the older child died or was kidnapped and therefore never grew up?
I've seen this a lot.  Always involving an untimely death.

If the 'z: Zoom' option greys out when you select the anachronist, then that's what happened.

This is what happened, apparantly.

Upon closer examination of the legends, it shows that she died a couple of years back, killed by a human. Upon seeing that I remembered that I had a child go bererk from a failed mood, and a caravan guard killed her.

Maybe dead dwarves names should be grayed out in the relationships list?

That is odd. A shame there's no method to draw out the actual ages from memory to see if it's the 'growing up' that's askew or the title attribution.
There is a way to find out - if he makes a backup of his save and abandons the fort, he can find the daughters in Legends to find out when they were actually born :)

Oooh, I never thought of that!

Kogan Zocoliden "Kogan Covenpaddle" was born in 104. She was the eldest daughter of Mörul Brimlash and Urvad Hazeknives

Rovod Domasatham "Rovod Guildfocuses" was born in 105. She was the second eldest daughter of Mörul Brimlash and Urvad Hazeknives

Even legends say that the grown-up's younger  :-\ ???

My big complaint with a lot of DF murals is that they're impossible to justify in-game.

Sure, you can have a great-looking mural made out of stone walls, but if there's another layer of rock above that somewhere, nobody's ever going to see it. The player can, sure, but I try to think of things in terms of the gameworld itself.

And yeah, the manpower necessary isn't huge. Building walls doesn't take a lot of time at all, even for unaccomplished masons, and you can always do it in small increments.

Not impossible at all. They have the same purpose as the Nazca lines:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nazca_Lines (whatever that purpose may be  ;D)

Floor murals would be a decorative plaza. Murals built from walls underground would be harder to justify, though.

I was checking around some relationship screens at random in my fortress when I came upon this:

 ???

Apparantly, one of my starting seven's second eldest daughter has grown up, but not his eldest. How does that add up?
