channeling a single tiles leaves a dwarf with the ability to go down but not up, and if there's something to dig down there, they'll go down and leave themselves trapped. And then rather than being patient and wait to be rescued, to try to dig somewhere else, to find they can't walk through solid rock. So they give up, and the dig order is canceled.

ugh

hey, I was about to mention that.

now I totally want to breed dwarves...

I must have gotten lucky then. My aquifer was only 1 level deep, as advertised.

on the bright side, aquifers let you farm underground without needing to breach the caverns.

on the not-so-bright side, you can't get to said caverns.

no clouds

You could simulate clouds with a large number of mist generators.
hey! We can simulate 'rain' this way!

And if we use magma...

in the world gen, you can set caves to be visible from the world map.

The underground features.

The underground is actually dangerous again! Yay! I haven't had to worry about invasions from below since 2d dwarf fortress, and it's nice to have a bit of excitement again - even if the excitement is sometimes an unkillable mutant that massacres everything in sight.

LOL invasions from below.

the freedom from being able to search for magma vents, you just can't help doing it, i ended up planning my games around them and failing most of the time. But now i have no idea if they are there.

I know what you mean. Now I can just gen 1-2 worlds to find ideal conditions for my fort, instead of 200. Also, it's liberating.

This forum is absolutely fine for megaprojects. And good luck! Are you planning on using a lot of yellow and white rock to replicate clouds? (and despite it being heaven and not hell, will there be magma?)

Being Dwarf Heaven and all, there should be rivers of the stuff.
Rivers of magma. It's dwarven heaven after all.

speaking of Dwarven physics...

perpetual motion still works.

having to build 137 screw pumps to get the magma to the surface.

This!! I haven't seen magma since the 0.31 release because it's too much trouble for me to use it. Thankfully, bituminous coal is all over the place so I can deal without magma-powered industry (but I am missing the traps sooo much).

I tried embarking on a volcano. unfortunately, the walls of the volcano go /straight/ down to the magma sea, with no random juts, which will make things difficult.

Speaking of which, how is fire in the new version?

out of personal experience, where a dwarf was set alight by a magmaman, ran up 150 flights of stairs, and divebombed into the booze stockpile, I'd have to say fire is the same as always.

As for what I like: magma on every map, and the abundance of z-levels.

Military.

3 things:

1. I make a pick for my new miner. THE MILITARY STEALS THE PICK!!! I make more picks. They get taken. My military gains mining skill... my miners stand idle.
2. I tell my military to attack a goblin. The military either kills the goblin, or runs the other way. Also, they still try to kill said goblin after it's death.
3. If a dwarf in the military dies, he is still considered 'part of the squad'.

of course, maybe there is something I am missing.

A giant, purple chinchilla. Somehow, it's just not intimidating. I didn't know chinchillas were even in the game.

Well, that's no ordinary rabbit! That's the most foul, cruel, and bad-tempered rodent you ever set eyes on! Look, that rabbit's got a vicious streak a mile wide! It's a killer! He's got huge, sharp-- eh-- he can leap about-- look at the bones!
