DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: ...how valuable does food get?
« on: November 03, 2011, 10:31:20 am »
I see what you mean. I looked at my prepared food sorted by value, and all the highest ones (above 30000 value) use a lot of roc parts--tallow, meat, intestines, etc.

I'm very happy that I've killed two different rocs. :D

This is vanilla, unmodded dwarf fortress.

It's royal jelly, roc meat (a Forgotten Beast megabeast), prickle berry wine, and royal jelly.

I know food is very ridiculous in terms of how high the value gets... but 987 food items in a stack?

In the first goblin ambush (happened at year 4), all three of my legendary herbalists died. Since I had a farm running by this time, I then decided that I never needed to gather plants again. It's year 11 of my fort right now, and I was right. So simply shifting your industries away from the surface world helps prevent dwarf death to surface hazard.  :P

Seriously, it's a valid form of keeping your dwarves alive. Risk mitigation. You'll never be in trouble if you don't expose yourself in the first place.

:-\ Don't kill the kobolds, they're just trying to provide for their families, and our dwarves lead lives of excess and luxury anyway; what's a few stolen <<+grizzly bear leather cloaks+>> to us anyway? Let them live! Let them LOVE! LET OUR SPECIES MINGLE, AND INTERMINGLE!

I don't support caged kobolds in the dining room cages, though. Kobold sex slaves can be a fiction for lonely dwarf boys to think about when they're spanking the rhesus macaque, but let not dwarven society be so degenerate as to use the cuddly wittle creatures purely for those purposes. The kobolds and dwarves should have a high-level mutually-enjoyable relationship, and people make love with whomever they love--does not matter whether it's dwarf on dwarf, kobold on kobold, or dwarf on kobold!

I have a DREAM! where kobolds will be able to join hands with dwarf men and women as partners and lovers. And man, do I love imagining this dream again and again...

Math is dead :(

Oh my god my brain just exploded that was an incredible piece. It also explains why I loved my high school physics class reinstated my love for math but my math classes did not: in physics, we analyzed problems and figured them out mechanically before applying the numbers, and we never memorized formulas (but had them available on note cards for the tests).

Just a quick question though: Why the hell would you have your miner that far outside your fort in the first place?

To level the embark site. I routinely scrape the entire surface to be 1 z-level if I don't explicitly have cool geographic formations resulting from cliff levels.

Take each politician as an individual. Confront them with your policy priorities and ask for their take on them. Those who are supportive get endorsed, those who aren't get condemned. Make peoples position over equality and other significant issues here as important and as much a part of public awareness as their positions on abortion.

Or the right to bear arms.  The NRA is the poster child for a successful public lobbying effort by public citizens on the nation level.  I hate the policies they advocate but admire the effectiveness with which they have pursued them.  They have not only organized supporters into an effective coalition but they have very effectively made use of the fault lines and quirks of our voting system.

Another unfortunate detail about the NRA is how political the leadership of the group still acts. In current times, the NRA is still pro-Republicans even though President Obama has shown the gun-rights advocates no harm. The public citizens are still followers of a corrupt lobbying leader, so I'm a little hesitant to celebrate the NRA as an example of citizen-level lobbying.

Though I will agree with you on the greater timespan, yes. The NRA is an effective coalition that lobby for citizen rights.

And one mooooooore thing!

[/jackie chan adventures uncle voice]

When I left the monkhood, my weight was as low as 105 pounds. I'm 5 ft 8 inches.

I still have no body fat and am up to 125 pounds with constant eating and working out.

If you want some of my beef, good ser, and can pay shipping, I'll mail it to you. I have to cut 70+ lbs to get back into the right weight class. ;_;

...seventy pounds is ridiculous. Like, 25 is a lot. But being expected to change your weight by 70 pounds? That's... unreasonable unless you're massively obese (like talking 350+) or you're considering liposuction.

(I say these things out of pure imagination--I don't know how regularly people lose that much poundage and don't claim to know much about weight loss.)

What defines the "right" weight class? Are you too heavy for heavyweight?

The trick is to get him digging before the gobbos see him.

i.e. digging your miners the second you see the announcement screen.

If that's the case, I can hit [m] -> [a], then scroll to the right twice to highlight the name of the Burro[w] that was previously set up encompassing in the inside of my fort, and press [enter/return]. All non-military personnel will head to the fortress proper and stay there, so the miners will be safe and my soldiers can still fight.

Once the fight's over, I can do the same steps to toggle the civilian burrow-restriction off.

I went into detail for anyone who's reading, it's not actually aimed at you, Acetech.

Yes.  Feel very dirty.

I can see that it's time to bring out Polly Nomial again :D

That is very awkwardly erotic~

I went from eroticism to open-mouthed horror, legit, considering it's a rape story. >.>

But devilishly clever.

Actually, that sounds like a great idea. I was thinking something corpulent and disgusting, but yours is better.

Cmon now. We really don't need to be trolling each other over this.
Who's trolling? These look like legitimate opinions to me.
While you complain about clothes (an understandable complaint) please do note that there're now things like adv-mode working dragonfire and new interactions which summarize and unite many different old things in a new pattern.
Translation: MOAR BUGS.

While I wouldn't particularly use the word trolling, since that's a declaration that you believe the person is being disingenuous, the posters that seem to actively try to interpret everything as negative are quite annoying.

The translation of "new features" is not "new bugs". It's "new features". Absolutely, bugs result from the new features, since programming and coding is not easy. But being bothered by new features simply because there will be bugs accompanying them is very small-minded. There's no consideration of the added perks of these specific new features. It seems like whining because the person wants to whine. The worst kind of angry people are the ones who want to stay angry.

A stocky four-foot-tall dwarf with an anarcho-libertarian woodsy mindset to hermit himself in a forest and eke out his own existence. He'd carve out a nice halfway-into-the-ground split-level abode of wood, stone, and soil and tend to a small plot and hunt. Making his own booze, clothes, and weapons, he'd find himself one day stumbling upon a scene where a shy female kobold is viciously mauled by a Gigantic Panda. Urist McDoesNotNeedAnyone kills her attacker, binds her wounds, and takes her to his bed where he awkwardly re-learns how to care about other sentient beings. In time, as she gradually recovers to the point where she helps him with small things, he grows to love. Species lines be damned, he has never admired another being quite like this. That being deserves his penis.

And then they pound it. Hard.

Yeah.

Oh yeah.

I specifically want Dwarf-Kobold relations implemented in the game. Kobolds are so cute.

I found this advice interesting. Thanks for sharing, OP.

(Although I question how the Miner will perform the dig without being scared off by the nearby ambushers.)

I voted for one of the Clothing issues, although the military equip one would have been my second choice. The entire clothing industry is relegated to the concept of Crafts/Toys/Instruments because they're simply useless to the nudist-minded dwarves. I always have a thriving clothing industry simply because I enjoy the idea that everyone is clad in my rich midnight blue, hand-made leather cloaks with emblems lovingly stitched in silky red thread, a uniformed city that impresses all the humans, elves, and dwarves in the continent.

But no. Everyone hates the clothes I painstakingly weave for them. Unappreciated. >:(

The actual thing I hate about it is wear and tear. I create new, fresh clothes to replace the torn clothing, but they don't use it. It's annoying.

The military equip bug is similar in functional problem even if its core coding issue is completely different. I want them to make use of the products of my fort.

Some of these "bugs" listed are not bugs in my opinion. It is a very, very real possibility for warriors to accidentally dodge into a pit. You, as their overmind, need to understand HOW the dwarves' minds work and how to manipulate them into survival. Don't send them against the enemy UNTIL the dwarves will engage them in a place safe for them.
