Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, I decided to use the Mayday tiles and version I did because I've had a lot of people tell me they couldn't get into the game with the ASCII default set. Even a few cute icons help immensely, and by using a fixed version the tutorials will not get out of synch with the game.

I guess in future I may need to post "what has changed" updates to the blog, but I figure if someone can play through 12 tutorials on an old version they will happily work out what new oddities Toady has coded in in a newer version ;)

My YouTube tips for Dwarf Fortress

I've had a lot of positive feedback from my play-along DF tutorials so I thought, now that they are complete, that I would post links to all 12 here.

Play-along? Yes, play along! New players can just pick up the pre-created save in the client I link in the first version and then follow along with my instructions. Lots of folks have said they found this to be an awesome way to learn a complex game! So, anyway, enough about all that. Here are some links.

To the OP:

You may find this tutorial helpful: Dwarf Resource Management.

I cover the transition from a few dwarfs to a lot of dwarfs and how to use the Dwarf Manager utility to "blob" your dwarfs into profession teams. I find it a really useful way to manage the transition from small numbers to lots of dwarfs. Give it a go.

Bedrooms are inside, but 3x1 rooms made of logs are to good for them!

That will be it. And I can't, all building is above ground. Even a 3x1 room is seemingly too expensive. Help!

Perhaps we will have to dig some underground space

Just had an emo death spiral on an outdoors only succession game on quartertothree.com. Have gone from 105 dwarfs to 27 in 2 seasons.

Now that things are stabilizing I am making more bedrooms (bad ex rulers!) and trying to assign dwarfs. Unfortunately my assign list has only a half dozen dwarfs on it, not the 20-or-so non injured or just arrived.

Thoughts?

In my tutorial 6, from my sig file, I talk about using Dwarf Manager.

I sort of had about the same instinct as you - losing track of my dwarfs and their jobs, but then Dwarf Manager and custom professions solved the problem for me.

Using custom professions I group like dwarfs ("crafy" profession is all dwarfs with a craft skill - to which I then turn on all craft skills for all) and manage them in blobs. Works well.

I usually have around 20%+ of the fortress doing nothing but hauling, I never concentrate on these folks, they just work. Craft, food, metalworking, mining and masonry/engraver dwarfs I manage as blobs, turning hauling on and off as required. Stuff gets done, I have control, jobs aren't left incomplete. Works well I find.

Cunning plan, but then they are likely stuck below an aquifer!

I will test your site a bit before I start the AAR to ensure I can make it all work and it will work for a fun story. Will let you know!

To the OP: The wiki and the tutorials on YouTube are great, but you might also like to try and really back-to-basics play-along tutorial I wrote. It's in my sig file. It gives you a pre-made world and save to play with and then you can play along with me step-by-step and learn the game as you go. I've had a lot of good feedback so far and it's up to 6 parts and.. I don't know.. maybe 18,000 words! With heaps of pictures too!

Can I get an M.A. in DF yet?  ;D

Awesome tutorials - they're the inspiration behind my "play along" tutorials (see my sig block). I fully intend to send my mediumly-trained recruits over to YouTube to continue their DF training once I'm done with my 10-or-so tutorials!

AFAIK, cave adaptation is only prevented and/or cured by being outside, not just aboveground+light.  But making a roof by flooring over the top makes the stuff below it inside, so dwarves will still suffer cave adaptation.

It's been a while since I tested it though, so there's a chance I might be wrong.

Ouch, so you can leave the ceiling off and get them rained on, or make a ceiling and get them adapted. O well, better micromanage my soldiers a little more...

Yeah - the frozen wasteland is a little harsh for the AAR I have planned. I'd need quite a thriving fortress before I could get my megaproject underway (Obsidian island), and I'd rather strike out on to it earlier.

Pretty amusing thought. And imagine if you could get all that magma all over the glacier at once. Massive obsidian river!
