DF Community Games & Stories / Re: Future Succession Game for New Version
« on: January 04, 2010, 10:47:37 am »
Looks great so far. You might want to wait before you type out some of the creature codes, though; the tags will have changed a lot by the time the next version is released.

Also, would you consider renaming the Kull to Urgals? Then, around one in seven of the Urgals born would turn into Kull, who'd be a lot bigger and harder to kill. 1 in, say, 100 of them could turn into a Ra'zac, who'd have the same abilities as in the book. I'm pretty sure it'll be possible to do that after the next release, anyways. It'd add a bit of variety to the civ.
Just throwing out ideas here :)

Grimes' log
25th Limestone, 204, Early Autumn

Several months ago, I, Grimes Bisekbomrek, set out for the fortress of Ticktorch with the intention of... well... there wasn't really any cause for this sudden move, to be honest. There comes a time in many a dwarf's life when they just say:

''Screw it, I'm migrating to a newly founded fort.''

However, unlike most of 'those dwarves', I've actually SURVIVED longer than a week! I, Grimes, a lowly peasant, have survived the endless goblin ambushes. The constant catsplosions. The tricky troglodyte excursions. The sneaky swallowmen attacks. The wily wild animal assaults. The kobold killings. Th-... well, you get the point. I'VE SURVIVED!

The fortress is a mess. Countless dwarves have fallen in the past four years, their remains stashed Armok knows where. The majority of the survivors have been placed into the ''Civlogistics'' group, wandering aimlessly about the filthy halls without a care in the world, unaware of the slaughter and chaos going on around them.  The last leader went insane and mined deep into the adamantine in the mines below. He hasn't been seen since. The other dwarves were quick to erect a wall blocking off the tunnel entrance once they heard strange noises coming from the depths.

Why have I started this diary then, you may ask, when it’s obvious that I will soon perish in this hellhole? Mainly because today, I was approached by the mayor, Ingish whatshisface. Due to the death of the previous leader, a new one was needed. After writing down the name of every dwarf in the fortress on slips of paper and putting them all in a hat, the nobles decided to pluck one out randomly to help them decide on a new leader. They picked out my name. I was to be the new fortress leader. I’m not even going to ask why they did that, but I accept this title graciously! Of course, I can’t run everything by myself, so I’ve handpicked 3 of the most competent dwarves in the fortress to help out: BKMW, Addict and Kinoko.

The diary may help me to plan ahead and to record my thoughts. Who knows; I might last at the job more than 2 days.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Sorry for taking so long; I've had a pretty busy couple of days. Don't worry, though. I've started playing the game at least :)

I didn't get to play it at all today. I have the introduction mostly written out, though, and that'll take the most time to write out; the smaller journal entries won't take long at all.
I'll do my best, but the fortress runs really slowly on my PC for whatever reason, so real progress won't be made until I get the game onto my dad's school laptop using a memory stick.

Thanks, I'll download the save later today. Do ya want another dwarf named after you, Kinoko?

I'd like to put in a vote for Lanternwebs. While it isn't as chaotic/failtacular/funny as most of the other forts, the writing's just brilliant.

Has anyone else voted for it?

I just decided to pop onto the forum for a while to see what's happening, and remembered that I'd been signed up to this succession. Sorry guys, I'm gonna have to pull out :-[ I'm waiting for the big update to come out before I start playing again. Thanks anyways.

Ahhh, sorry guys. I'm gonna have to pull out. School is just taking up too much of my time  :(

EDIT: Actually, I might try and make a quick fortress over the weekend. Don't expect anything great, though :P

Hold on... Are we supposed to build any mega projects?

Edit: Are we allowed to use something like, say, Dwarf Therapist to organize our dwarves better?

(I've edited this post about 5 times now)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your first fortress
« on: August 27, 2009, 12:59:41 pm »
I spent about 2 days on the wiki before I even played the game, then when I finally started I took some notes off the quick start guide (didn't know you could minimize the window). After a while, I just got bored with the terrible design and lack of anything to do and tried to flood the place from a nearby brook. But I got fed up of that, too, because of the lag :P I think my second fortress was the same. My third, I still have to this day, even if it is terribly designed, and I haven't had any 'real' fortresses since then. I've tried several, and I'm currently started on 2 well designed ones, one on the dwarf heaven map and one with the orc mod. Good times.

Will everyone take a pledge to not use Reveal???

No. Yes, of course!

Great utility. Works like a gem, and is really neat and tidy. Thanks!

I'm actually a noob, but I'm just going into this challenge for fun. It's all good when I reach my inevitable death...

...Actually, scratch that. I really need to figure out how the game works before I enter the Master's challenge, or else the entire point of the Master's Challenge goes away.

Sign me out for now, because I don't think I'm ready for this.

Aw, comon. Be a sport =p I suck, and I'm still joining. At the very least, it'll be a bit of fun, and our misguided attempts at fortress building will provide comic relief for the veterans :D

What's with all of the nay-saying? The update will come when it's done, and it'll be epic (or it'll set the ground work for even greater features that'll come in the future). Just be patient, and ye'll be rewarded.

In the meantime, I think I'll keep myself busy by reading the many community games and failing spectacularly at the current version of DF.
