DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Caught fire man in wooden trap

Have I mentioned how much I LOVE this game???

So apparently I released an Elephant from a cage trap I THOUGHT was tame.
It has a name,
it has "tame" next to it...

However I keep getting "Task interrupted, Stray Elephant"
I found the Elephant in my animal list and it IS listed as tame.
I told someone to butcher and...

"Ursit Cancels Butcher animal, interrupted by Elephant"

I tired to "Kill" him but I can't target him because he's (sigh) listed as tame...

What shall I do?

So....

I got my King!

He seems an ok bloke, nothing too special. So I decided to make him into something more "Kingly"
Went through and started assigning him the best gear my fort had to offer!

Well looking at his equipment screen there is the usually list of "Individual choice" for everything... Except one.
for his head gear it says "Emerald Metal Headware"

Now, he isn't wareing any "crown" or any headgear at all, but it is still there.

Anyone seen this before?

DF Gameplay Questions / Soap Production Grinds to a halt.

Ok so here whats going on...

As we know, you need a BARREL full of Lye to make soap...
Right now I have about 50 BUCKETS full of lye that are useless, because there seems to be a bit of water in each bucket...
The soap makers won't take the lye from the buckets to make soap...

How do I fix this?

Is there a way to pour Lye from buckets into barrels?

DF Gameplay Questions / Fort gripped by unknown sleeping sickness

AFter a run in with a megabeast I THOUGHT I was in the clear...
But about 3months latter I noticed large groups of Dwarves asleep.

At first I thought it was a coincidence, but after a bit more time, over 90% of the fort is now asleep, people are getting thirty and hungry, and I'm afraid going to start starving in their sleep. There is no sing of infection, wounds or other illness, just sleeping

Not sure if this has been hit on before, but while thinking about ways to exit the Underground, I remembered one of my abondoned forts was near by, and I could just go up it.

So THAT made me htink, "HEY! in fortress mode it's easy to dig a nice shaft all the way down to Magma really simply!" Soooooooo

The idea presents itself, Founding mass forts, building a shaft through all three layers, and then abondoning.

You make the fort last just long enough to do this task, should take less then 30min or so really and there you go!
Repeat on a mass scale, and soon, you have exits all over the world!

Ok, so currently I have what is one of my most largest and succesful forts, and I am thinking of soon exploring it in adventure mode.

The fort is MASSIVE,
Over 200 Dwarves
Over 50 legendary warriors and 70 more "milital" clad in Masterwork Steel armor.
Over 20 artifacts including artifact wepons and armor
And of course the king resides here as Mountain Home.

So... My question is when I abondon. Will any of this actually go back to the world?

Would I see near by towns flooded with steel Masterwork Armor and Candy wepons?
Would I see an army of Legendary warriors go out slaughtering monsters in the wilds?
Would the king pick a new mountain home?

I wonder this because in a world where a "+Iron Sword+" may be one of the best weps in existance, it would seem a total waster if all of this "Stuff" was simply left to drift in the wilds with no one to carry it on.

In my last five attempts at spawning massive 1050 long large region worlds...
All of spawn attempts resulted in maps where there where less then 200 Dwarves left alive in the whole world. One map spawned less then 50 at the end.

At first I thought it was a fluke, after all I had slightly increased the number of titans and thought they just murdered everyone.  Instead, after my 5th attempt, I find every single time Humans absolutely Dominate the world. There are hundreds of small Human towns and hamlets, and hundreds more forts all over the land scape. Yet there are often less then a dozen Mountain homes ever founded, and about 90% end with everyone starving to death.

Is this a bug? Do I have a screwy version? What the flarg is going on with the mighty Dwarves always dying out?

As someone who just recently started an adventure in the newest release, I have to say I was caught a bit off gaurd as I wondered through my first "Town"

In the old games, Towns were, well, town like.
There were houses, each one with a bed, table, chair and some food. 
There were 'Inns'  Buildings with 6 rooms per level, and up to 5 levels tall.
And of course there was the 'Pub' the place with booze full of tables and chairs.
The big towns had castles inside, and on rare occasion a 'Temple' carved with the civs history.

But now.
Now I find myself in a huge, sprawling town with no roads, no Bars, no Inns.
Only "Houses" cramed with people.  No furniture any more. No beds, no tables, no chairs...]
I have walked from one side of the world to the other on my current Dwarf, and I have yet to find a single town that had anything resembeling the old buildings.

Seriously what is up with the change?

I just Embarked on the border between a "TERRIFYING" and a "SERENE" Biome..

As of now, I have Both a Unicorn, and a Skeletal Giant Eagle on the screen at the same time.

i LOVE this game.

SO what are some other FUN stories of Crazy Biomes?

So in my Moria fort right now, as per "plot" the greedy candy crazed drwarves have locked the entrances gates  rather then let anyone else share in the 30zlevels of pure candy.

Of course this will mean any future migrants are left out on the Ice to freeze and starve to death.

So I am curious how often others end up doing this? wether to cut down on overcrowding or for story reasons.

Deep down in my Moria Map A group of creeping eyes popped up on the edge of the map.
Wanting a bit of practice, I sent one of my squads out to butcher them up.
Well they did, and no sooner then they finished, but a group of another 8 or 10 Eyes showed up!
They were killed with ease as well, but then SUDDENLY CRUNDLES!!!
The mobs keep spawning and I watch my Dwarves kill rate soar
ELK BIRDS INCOMING!

So how often have you settled in a cold biome and start off with SNOW EVERYWHERE.
Every last thing covered in snow.  You think AWESOME! A cold harsh environment to test my Dwarves upon!

Of course come spring it all melts... But you spend the whole next year waiting, waiting for the whole world to go white again!
And when winter does indeed come again???

Nothing...
The river freezes, and there is some "light dusting of snow" on the high reaches, and thats all.
Why no snow?

UPDATE at bottom

Ok, had a MegaBeast with Deadly Dust for the first time...
Everyone went on and on about how"Deadly Dust" was THEE most fearful deadly thing in all of Dwarfdom..

Deciding to meet the foe head on, I sent out two groups of archers and my best Axe Dwarfs, figuring I could kill it quick and from afar..
The battle indeed WAS short, I few blasts and it was dead, it unleashed only ONE burst of dust, which seemed to only wound most of the squard.
I looked at injuries, a few bruises, two Dwarfs had broken limbs, but other then that unharmed.

That was it? The infamous Deadly Dust? A few bruises and broken limbs? HA!!!

Smug and Satisfied with my triumph over Death, I sent everyone back to work in the fort.
Some time latter however I received the following.

"Guard Dwarf cancels fill water skin, too injured"
What was this?

I went to check and upon looking EVERY SINGLE BODY PART Was yellow.
Every toe, every finger, everyone bone and body organ was yellow or blue.
Less then 3 minutes of real time after that, I got the following...

""Gaurd Dwarf A has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf B has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf C has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf D has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf E has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf F has suffocated
""Gaurd Dwarf G has suffocated

So... yeah...

UPDATE!!!

Well My Saga of the Deadly Dust continues..

In a mad attempt to save the lives of the wounded, I hyper modded the healing of Dwarves, hoping they would regenerate before dropping dead. 
They did heal... But still dropped dead due to suffocation and beign covered in what is effectivly Freezing liquid ((Think being doused in liquid CO2))

So... I then removed "BREATHING" from the init files.

This DID allow them to live, and they DID regenerate... Except for apparent nerve damage.  After about 10min playing, all wounds were back to white except for 'Brain' and 'Upper and Lower Spine'
But HEY they were ALIVE right? Who cares if they can't move and are Still covered inf freezing liquids of Doom? I'll work out a way to fix that LATER
Am I rite?

So...  I Q'ed up a hell of a lot of stuff from having the game so long, set the fort to work, and then went off to dinner with some friends...

45min later I come back to find EVERY LAST DWARF is infected now!  Also the Whole fort is filled with clouds of miasma.  Why?
Because EVERY LAST Dog, cat, elephant and pet dropped dead about 20min previous.  EVERY LIVING THING other then Dwarves are now dead, and the Dwarves themsleves have been reduced to braindamaged unworking, undieing things crying out to finally be realeased from the un-ending pain.

DEADLY DUST people!
