Basically, as someone who only has a basic group of how the military fields work, how do I have this guy teach others?

DF Gameplay Questions / Using bridges to dumps megabeasts, doesn't work?
« on: February 27, 2012, 06:18:28 am »
I have a megabeast with "Deadly Blood" that I refuse to let me Dwarves go anywhere near.
I thought to lure it into a trap using a bridge as a trap door and then drop it into the magma sea.
Now the thing moves fast so I built a series of four different bridges over the length of a very long hallway.

I had to savescum several times to time it JUST right to have someone pull the level JUST as it was entering the hallway,
FINALLY it got in right annnndd.... the bridge wouldn't retract... Keep in mind there was more then one bridge, and all the OTHERS retracted, but the one it was on didn't.
WTH?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Tactic for Maximum Candy Extraction.
« on: February 26, 2012, 10:13:00 am »
Not sure if this has been done before, I would imagine SOMEONE would have discovered this before.
But just to everyone else...

As we all know, upon discovering the "Candy" we want to mine as much as possible without hitting the internal cavity. Once the cavity is breached, "FUN" usually happens soon after. Well...

If you breach the cavity inside, the interior is revealed all the way down.  If you are lucky you re-seal it immediatly.  The purpose?

Once you can see the cavity, you dig down the outside of it to the bottom using up/down stairs.
At the bottom layer, to prepar make a small stockpile of stone, and have a mason/miner standing by.
Breach the cavity once more, and then VERY quickly reseal it by flooring over the bottom. If done properly, this will allow you to mine out the entire columne of Candy un-molested.

DF Wiki Discussion / No Ash items? Really?
« on: February 22, 2012, 01:02:38 pm »
In a recent fort that will require HUNDREDS of clear glass windows, I decided to learn all I could about making potash and pearlash, only to find there IS no entry for them. Did I miss something? or are these things simply overlooked?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / I think I just found Dwarf "Moria"
« on: February 19, 2012, 06:33:56 am »
[EDIT Ok, if I did this correctly.... I think here is the worldgen parameters.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
]

IE, I have come across the single most largest most extensive cave system in Existence!

So basically, it's like this. A while back I picked a massive mountain in a cold, freezing biome far away from civilization.
Went straight in and began digging. And less than 18z levels down, hit the first system.

Now then... normally there are the 2 basic levels, and then the magma sea. Sometimes a third one with the magma sea directly under it.
Right? And usually each layer is, what, 5 or 6z levels tall?

First System I hit was 14z levels. It wasn't just huge in scale, but had MASSIVE open spaces.
Huge rooms that were flat and 6 to 7 levels tall. Open spaces underground you could fit a whole fortress in.
And that was the first level.

Second cave system?
Only about 6 levels down... But the second one was 16[/i]z levels in size with equally massive rooms.
Oh yess, and THIS one has a Magma Pipe AND (giggles) Annnd a Giant Cave Spider!!!

Ok so moving on, less then 3z levels down is the third and final cave system.
now while this one is only a scant 5z levels down, it does NOT terminate in the magma sea.

Oh no... the magma sea STARTS another 20 levels under THAT!
From there it goes down for at least another 30 levels before blacking out.
It may go down even MORE and I haven't found the bottom.
What I DO know, is Bottom is over 160 levels down, and I am barely past 100.
Oh and Did I mention The amount of "Candy" here???
There are "Candy" Pillars that start on the third level and go straight down ALL THAT DISTANCE!

Still not Dwarf enough?

Here is one final thought to chew on...
The whole place is on a "timer" to Doomsday..
You see, there is a glitch in the map that shattered Hell itself.
And because of that, the Magma sea is Draining into it. There is of course over 60 levels of Magma sea. But at some point, the Clowns shall POUR out from Hell as the last magma drains away..

Gentlemen.

DF Gameplay Questions / My Workers have stopped working... AGAIN >_<
« on: February 14, 2012, 06:26:10 am »
Ok this has happened before and each time it seems to take something different to fix and it ALWYAS seems to happen to my wood workers.

First time around it happened early on in a fort and they all just stopped cutting trees.
I fixed that by turning off the wood workers hauling duties, as it seemed to confuse them.

Then I had a group that stopped working all together.
I didn't get that fixed till I had a group of migrants come, the new migrants with wood working would start up, but the old carpenters would still never touch the stuff.

Now? Now NOTHING is working.
Ironically they actually WILL cut down tress...
But they neither Haul the wood or make anything from it.
Dammnit I have loads of Beds and Training Spears I need right now!

Whats worse is it seemed to spread to other shops!

I have 4 Mechanic workshops Q'ed up with no one touching those either!
Same goes for the Lye making shopes.

What gives???

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / "Something" is killing my Demons!!!
« on: February 12, 2012, 10:09:41 am »
Ok...

So in a recent game, soon after starting I accidently breached into the circus, but was able to seal the breach befor any 'FUN' happened.
However... shortly after that on my unit screen I begin to see corpses pile up:

"One-Eyed Anteater Monster"
"Black Brute"
"Scropian Fiend"

And so on.. I don't even think these ARE demons because the bodies show up as Green not red.

I wondered if there was some sort of underground war going on, so I explored all three of the Under Bioms, but aside from Endless Zombie crundles and Zombie Trogs, nothing was found.

Oh yeah did I mention? I am in an EVIL Biom.
These "monsters" seem to be the ONLY thing NOT a Zombie.

Seriously!

He is shouting for "Rock" and "Rock bars"
and there are piles of stone and stone blocks around.
Unless rock BARS means something else, I'm stumped.

DF Gameplay Questions / Need Help from someone with Dwarf hack,
« on: February 02, 2012, 11:08:01 pm »
Soooo ok, heres how it goes.
I play on a Mac, which means about 95% of all DF Utilities are off-limits to me.

The one I most need is Dwarf Hack?
Why?

Among the things it can do is remove any type of muck from a saved file.
I have a file with a LOT Of muck.
Specifically a syndrom that makes people vomit and fall unconscious.
This has happened in one of my biggest most successful forts EVER< almost 200 people.

The game has got to the point where the fort is flooded with Vomit and no one gets anything done because everyone is falling unconscious.

As such, I deeply DEEPLY implore a kind hearted PC user to to a wack at my file.
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=5438

Purge it of vomit, purge it of muck, and if needed, hack the Dwarfs themselves to purge them of the disease.
The Flooding of Vomit MUST END!!!

DF General Discussion / How old a computer could run DF?
« on: July 22, 2011, 01:28:30 pm »
Ok, so DF, the ORGINAL DF... Orginal orginal, We look back on it and many who first see it say "Hey! that looks like something made in the 70's!"

Well it got me thinking... We know DF is a complicatewd game, but its graphiclly VERY simple.  If you took the orginal DF release, just how simple a computer could run it? One from the 80's? 70's ?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / "Something" just killed a Forgotten Beast
« on: July 22, 2011, 09:08:04 am »
Ok, so in an attempt to save Frame rate, I bypassed all three Caverns and suck a shaft straight down to the Lava Sea.
As a result, I was somewhat surprised when, scrolling through units, I saw under "Deceased" Omsos Forgotten Beast

A great humanoid composed of Salt. It has a short trunk and it has a bloated body. Beware its webs!
"Its Upper Body Is Gone

Sooo.....  Something in the "underground" chopped the body of a FB in half.  Granted it is made of salt, but still worrying.,

Ok, so it starts with Dwarf Fortress.  Simple enough really. Me playing the game.

Started off with my mind seeing the standard Top down Mayday Dwarf Graphics mod.  The Fort I began to lay out seemed to follow my current preferred design, that of large circles in a larger ring with a "city" Of course the dream let things get a bit bigger then normal.  I started seeing over lapping rings extending out in greater and greater sizes. At one point my mind "told" me I had over 700 Dwarfs!!!

Seriously 700 dwarfs in one sprawling mammoth fortress.

Of course as the dream got going, my mind brought up "Real" Dwarf Fortresses.  I began overlaying images of Moria from LOTR and "Lonely Mountain" from The Hobbit.  I could actually "see" from the perspective of the Dwarfs.  It was a pretty kick ass fort, hug forges, expansive caverns, immense sprawling halls that menaced with spikes of gold and silver.

The bigger the fort became the more it had to expand.  And sadly we dug too much too deep!

A horrible forgotten beast was unleashed! Not just a Beast, but a Fallen GOD! I raised a might army against him, drafting my most Dwarf Dwarfs who had smote down many a beast before.  My whole city readied for battle. The Evil would send forth might legions of beasts which my dwarfs attacked in fearsome battle!  Again and again great dragons and horrid beasts from the depths where called up and my legions would strike them down.  But the war was a costly one! My Dwarfs grew fatigued and realized they had to destroy the fallen God Directly!

They gathered themselves up in one mighty force to take on the great Evil directly!

But, it was to no avail! The Great enemy would lay down vast rows of Dwarfs, smiting them down with reckless abandon.  Watching from on high, I realized it was not playing by "the rules" at least... Not the Rules of Dwarf Fortress.

It saw me up on high, and mocked my Hubris! I realized he had been but toying with my mighty city all along! That at a whim he could lay waste to all I had built. I knew then that only I could take this great evil on!

I adorned myself with the best my Dwarfs had mad, a great armor and mace of Adamantine and challenged the Fallen God on his own grounds!

Deep in the very depths of my City we waged epic battle, ever he smote me and ever I hewn him!  Many a time he had but struck me down, but I recovered if only just.  And then, I realized something which would turn the tide of battle.  He was NAMING his attacks upon me!

I now knew what rules he was playing by, the great Beast was playing by ANIME Rules!  Because everyone knows you NAME you attacks in anime!

Armed with this knowledge, I fought back with renewed vigor! I took up the mantle of an Anime hero as I knew the rules well, better I would guess then the Evil!

"I am Crossroadia! Leader of the Dwarfs of Crossroads! I fight for the glory of the Dwarf and the great Toad! And in the name of the Toad I shall Punish you!"

I picked up a Pen, which we know is mightier then sword, and I picked up a book which was my shield!  I needed an "upgrade" because everyone knows Anime heros always get upgraded before defeating the final Boss!

Inspired by their leaders great acts, my remaning Dwarfs banded together behind me, ready to join me in a final clash.  As if sensing this turning tide, the Evil turned upon us! He let loose his most fearsome attack, an attack... He forgot to name!

I raised my book which became a mighty Dwarf Shield, the blast struck us and we were engulfed in fire! A great cone of destruction lept out around us, smiting my glorious city into ashes!  The beast thought he had won at last, yet.  I emerged still alive! My Dwarfs ready for final battle!  My Pen became a Fearsom Dwarf Hammer and I lept forth!

And then... And then my "mom" came into the dream, and said I had to take out the trash... which was rude since I had moved out of my parents over Three years ago.

By the time I came back, the game had reset to "demo" mode :<

Ok so recently I set out to find a new place for a Megaprogect...
I wanted to do something TRUELY Big, I needed to, say, found a Mountain and just CARVE A fortress into the side of it..
Well, I think I found my Mountain!!!
http://dffd.wimbli.com/file.php?id=4646

This thing is EPIC in size over FIFTY Tiles tall at the very tip to the vallery floor.
Sure sure there ARE bigger mountains out there, but this one just SCREAMS "carve a fcken Fortress into the side of me Bitch!"
ONE Thing that might make it better..

I use a Freaking Mac and so I don't have Stonesense.  Anyone out there able to use the program to show this thing in it's true Epic Glory?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / What Happened to the [SPEED1] cheat?
« on: July 07, 2011, 10:30:54 am »
I am sure many of us know the old speed "cheat" which effectively makes Dwarfs move SUperfast.
Something very useful in starting a Dwarf, and in combating FrameRate Destruction in later games.
Now, unless I am missing something in the raws, I no longer see "SPEED" in the creature rars to edit.
Where did it go?

DF Gameplay Questions / Need Help "Cheating" (DwarfHack)
« on: July 05, 2011, 01:28:24 pm »
Ok so here is the situation.
On one of my most Epic forts ever, I currently have 100% of all Dwarfs, animals, pets and anything living infected with a vomit inducing Disaes that causes them to fall Unconsious every 5min.

The Fort is nigh unplayable at this point and is utterly covered in vast pools of Vomit.

Now I have been told tales of DwarfHack and what it can do, but there is a hitch.  I have a Mac and as far as I know it is PC only. So...

What I am hoping is to zip my file and give it to a kind person who can run DwarfHack on it for a while and remove the vomit as well as run it long enough for the Dwarfs to be cured and free.  As long as there is one bit of Vomit, the Fort can be reinfected.
